History
Established in 1950.
The business was originally started (as quoted by Mr Youens) supplying tiles from a shed and quickly grew, eventually moving behind Rayners Lane station, by the sidings, as a base for our fixers who did much of the work for W.E.Black and Cutlers as the area around what was known as Metroland grew.
We eventually moved to 18, the store we are currently in around 1952 and registered the business in 1957 quickly taking on no's 20 and 22.
Originally the 3 shops were seperate selling haberdashery from 18, tiles from 20 and ironmongery/hardware from 22.
We progressed to manufacturing and fitting fireplaces from the tile shop warehouse, many of which are still in use today in homes around the area.
Eventually the tile business took over and we had more than a hundred fixers on the go constantly, so quick was the take up of property in the suburbs.
The Hardware shop was eventually sold and became well known as Tate and Lynn and the Tile shop took over the haberdashery as its need declined.
