Hyashis is the BEST sushi my family and I have ever had!! It is fresh, simple, and flavorful! Although we had to call 224 times to finally get through to order, it is so worth it!!! We ordered at 11:30 and it was ready at 2:00 for pickup. The lady working there is wonderful and our order was accurate, the spicy sauce on the side is a must, I highly recommend this place for fresh sushi in Kona!

Avocado, spicy ahi, imitation crab, cream cheese !

Locals, tourists ... EVERYONE should experience this Kailua Kona gem! It's right on Ali'i drive In the heart of Kona. We would drive all the way from Hilo and stop here before going to Hapuna beach, just so we can have fresh sushi rolls EXACTLY HOW WE WANTED IT. Because that's the name of the game..."you make the roll!" Make sure to call in your order ahead of time. Just like anything on Hawai'i island, it takes awhile to make your food. But we're in paradise, what's the rush? Go take a walk down Ali'i drive and come back. Everything is fresh and the size of the maki sushi is so big ! It's more of a take out place, but if you want a table to sit on there are a few tables with umbrellas outside the sushi shop. Get everything ! They're known for their sushi pizza, but I haven't tried it yet. Maybe soon on our next interisland trip.

Generous portions, great flavor combinations & fresh ingredients !!! Took us a while to get through the phone lines, but once we placed our order we could rest assured we could be enjoying sushi for lunch! Our order was ready on time & we were greeted as we walked to the shop, she came out right away to give us our order & ask us about utensils, shoyu, wasabi & ginger for our orders!

I didn't want to write this review, but after my experience, I feel compelled to share. I called in my order at 11:30 AM, and was told there would be a 4-hour wait. Upon picking it up, I had to wait an additional 30-50 minutes. To make things worse, while I was waiting, a customer walked in, ordered two rolls, and was told their wait would be 10-20 minutes. It doesn't make sense that a 3-roll order, placed 4 hours in advance, would take longer. As for the food, the price is on the cheaper side, so I will give them credit for the portion size. However, the taste was underwhelming--very basic with no special sauces, imitation crab, and nothing to set it apart. Compared to places like Tanioka's, Ono Seafood, Makoto Sushi, or even poke from Foodland or KTA, this didn't measure up. If you're looking for affordable sushi with decent portions, this place might work for you. But if you're after great-tasting sushi, I'd recommend trying somewhere else.

Call ahead at least an hour to place your order! It's a super small restaurant and they run on to go orders only. I had read so many reviews that the rolls were huge and they are HUGE! I ordered two and shared it with my boyfriend, was the perfect amount! I custom made one of my rolls and then ordered the Ninja Star Roll. Both were so fresh and delicious!

The sushi here is amazing. The sizes of their pieces and rolls are bigger than your typical sushi place. The fish also tasted very fresh. The lady helping us was so kind. She told us it would be a 30-40 minute wait, but it got out to us at about 25 minutes. It was perfect because we walked around and tried some other places while we waited. You can call in your order or go to the location and order. There's also a place to eat right outside. This place is easy to miss, but it is located at the end of the shopping center sort of down an alley.

    The mele & Jenna roll

Best rolls on the island hands down. in love with the Jenna roll and the spicy sauce. Long wait and 100 plus calls so definitely order ahead of time but it's 100% worth it every time. 100/10

Heard so many great things about this place so I figured I needed to try it !! I called right at 11 am and placed my order. The food was so yummy and I got 2 different types of rolls. One was a custom and the other was a pre made roll. The hype is real and I am so happy I got to try them out!

Hayashi's You Make the Roll is a Kona Gem. Fresh Fish, Local Style Sushi, DELICIOUS! It makes me sad to see any negative reviews on this shop. Does it take some effort to put your order in? - YES Do you have to wait hours for your food to be ready? - SOMETIMES Can you just place an order in person? - NO They are fair and make everyone's sushi in the order they are placed. Makes no sense to walk in, be at the bottom of the order list, waiting there 4 hours for your sushi to be prepped right? In the past, you HAD to place an order in person and the 2, 3, 4 hr wait still applied back then. Having a forced rule of call in only is way more efficient and convenient. What most probably don't know is that there are about 2-3 people working in the shop at a time, and there's only ONE sushi maker and the sweet little lady who takes orders and brings them out to you. I ordered around 12PM on Saturday and pick up wasn't til 4:40PM - makes sense if there are 50-100 orders that got in before I did - very likely on a Saturday. I happily compromised and had the sushi for dinner instead of lunch. I am so grateful that You Make The Roll has chosen to remain open, in an area where lots of restaurants come and go. Every time I get my Hayashi's fix, I guarantee will take a nap after #KANAKATTACK

Ok sushi but not as fire as the reviews made it out to be. The flavors fell short and did not reach every part of the sushi. The sushi was big and neat but I want bold flavors. All of this including the tsunami was timid in flavor and I was very disappointed about the overall visit. Not worth the 4 hour wait. Get sushi elsewhere!

Enjoyed this spot in Kona. The rolls are huge so keep that in mind when ordering. Called right when they opened and ordered for pick up. The wait can be long so calling ahead is a must!

I don't understand the hype. It's rolls and it's alright. Rolls are little bigger than other places. Not missing much.

They have a TV showing historical clips of the Japanese immigrants who moved to Hawaii. We learned so much just dining there! The servers were very nice and friendly. They even offer free, hot green tea. It wasn't crowded when we went there for lunch. The server said we could order from the dinner menu too. The restaurant is decorated with a bunch of old family photos. It's not a fancy food location, but a place that is in the locals' hearts. Also, it's not standard Japanese American food, so don't come in looking for rolls and such! Instead, they serve fresh, perfectly prepared Japanese food with a Hawaiian twist, favorites like saimin and shrimp tempura. The large saimin ($16.17) was delicious and really hit the spot. Toppings were Spam, eggs, and veggies. Simple, but tasty! Shrimp tempura appetizer ($14.85) was a pretty large sized dish. The pieces have a lot of crunchy batter and the kids loved it. It was a bit greasy, but that's to be expected. DH got a Oyako Donburi with sashimi ($21.93). Wow, the sashimi was truly amazing! So tender, it just melts in your mouth. The eggs were cooked with bamboo pieces which kinda threw DH off. I liked them, but DH would've preferred it without. The flavor is sweet/salty and pretty mild. It came with miso soup and some pickles. Parking is right in the front and backs into the main road. It can be spicy getting out if traffic is heavy. They don't have a lot of bathrooms, so there might be a wait. Those are the downsides. Otherwise, a wonderful local place to eat!

We stopped at Da Poke Shack, but they were unexpectedly closed (see my profile). So we made our way to Pau Hana and I was very surprised! I came around 3:45PM, so their options were limited (which makes total sense, because of fresh fish!) and I wish I had come earlier in the day so I had a wider selection. Fish was very flavorful, and the rice was perfectly sticky. I got the Hawaiian style Ahi (I wish I had come earlier to try the salmon) and the octopus (not too rubbery, but just a bit tough), with imitation crab and edamame. Everything was very well seasoned, flavorful, and fresh. The service was very nice, the employee dishing us up was fast and talkative and wasn't judgmental when I asked if anything I had on my plate would be spicy (I don't do well with spicy food). I really recommend this place if you're in the area! I'm from AZ and I get pokè at least once a month because it's my favorite food, and fish in a land locked state will never be the same as it is on the coast!

The Kalua Pork was dry too and the "spicy" garlic butter shrimp barely had any heat or garlic flavor at all. About the only thing that was decent was the Mac salad which was probably made and bought from somewhere else. I was also looking forward to buying a shirt, a tank top or a hat but here was ZERO apparel anywhere. The whole back wall was a big gridwall panel that was completely bare.
