We saw a sign that said cash only that day, since their machine was down. We went to a nearby bank to get cash and came back. The lady was nice and gave us some free ume plum drinks that were good- had a nice smokey flavor. My friend and I shared the cucumber appetizer, the pork buns, the xlb, and an order of mala dandan noodles. The cucumbers were super good, and the numbing spiciness was refreshing. I also really enjoyed the sauce in the noodles. I was let down with the dough components in all the dishes. It was probably an off day, but the xlb skin was overcooked. Some of them were already broken when it was served, and many times they broke when I picked them up with chopsticks. The lady saw this and offered to a free order of xlb next time we go, but I probably will not have the chance to visit anytime soon. The skin on the pork bun was a bit soggy. The inside was good and juicy. The noodle texture was unfortunate, since it didn't really have a chewy texture and was also soggy. The lady was super nice to us, probably because we spoke Chinese to her. She told us that she used to train with a Szechuan chef and her stories were impressive. Walked in on a Friday night and was told by the owner to take a seat at an open table but not order yet until the kitchen clears out existing orders first. So we sat for about 25-30 minutes until we were allowed to use the machine to place our order. After ordering, we waited another 25 minutes to receive our first dish. The food was mediocre. You Kitchen has been an SGV staple for us, and it should be on your list as well. The owner is so sweet, and she recognizes our order lol. This little place is located in a shopping plaza next to another SGV heavy-hitter, but I usually head to this little shop for my noodle and dumpling fix. Parking is super abundant on the sides of the parking lot, but the area closest to the street/the front of the shops is usually crowded. Our usual order: - Beef noodle soup (you can choose hand-torn or regular noods) - Beef roll (dog dad's #1) - Steamed xiao long bao - Pan fried chive egg pillow (my #1) Pre-COVID, you could place your order at the little kiosk to the immediate left when you enter the shop (make sure to include the booth or table number where you will be sitting). They have booths and tables for dining in, and they were all numbered to ensure your food would go to the right table. Post-COVID, we mainly order over the phone or online. Everything is always packaged really well, and condiments (chili oil and soy sauce) are included with the utensils and napkins. We always have leftovers, but everything still tastes great the next day. We love the fact that everything is a good size and the flavor is really rich. And the dumplings are juicy and have soup bursting out of it, but not too fatty. Shanghai wonton soup (5/5) So simple but so tasty! A clear-ish broth, comes with seaweed, pieces of scrambled egg, and lots of small wonton! The filling in each was good-tasted a lot like rice wine but not overpowering! Beef noodle soup, mild spicy (5/5) Omg so good!! Best beef noodle soup I've had since Taiwan!! The beef chunks are incredibly tender, and the thick noodles are thin but chewy. Broth is really flavorful but also light. Gotta get it if you go here!! Pork and cabbage steamed dumplings (4/5) Really really good, bursting with juice. You order through a kiosk immediately to the left as you enter. It's a little daunting at first, but the staff will gladly help you out if you're a little befuddled (like I was). I ordered dumplings as I had a craving. Food: 4/5 The dumplings were perfectly pan fried and smelled delicious. The 4 star rating come from here though. Although pan fried, the wrappings used were on the thick side so that I felt I was eating more wrapping than actual filling. I also felt that the filling was too little maybe because of the thickness of the wrapping. Otherwise, the dumplings were seasoned well and pretty tasty. The chili sauce at the table was odd and I get the impression it was homemade. Last night I visited the next door popular spot and as I passed by I liked the selections choices they had on the window. So today, I decided to try this mom and pops restaurant to try it and support a local business. I first tried the stew beef noodle soup: it was delicious and better than the one I had next door. Not only it tasted good but I my looked really nice. Next I tried the advertise homemade steamed shrimp, pork and chive dumplings: they were pretty good, nothing extraordinary. To go I ordered the beef tool: I liked it a lot. It has a nice and soft flavor (little pungy, sweet and salty) delishhhhh! To top it off, the lady was very nice and sweet. She greeted me with a smile. This made my experience nice. My favorite was the stew beef soup and the beef roll. Yummy in my tummy! Excellent northern style Chinese cuisine. We had big scallion sesame "pizza", big mouth pocket, pan fried chive egg pillow, beef roll, some dumplings and xiaolongbao. Each was made perfectly and made to order. The pizza, pocket, and pillow were crisp on the outside with yummy sesame seed coating. The insides were soft, flavorful, and came out piping hot. Be patient after you order. It takes a little time to come to your table but it's definitely made with love and experience. The Chinese name for the store is "Grandmother's Home". The was a huge pleasant surprise! The large Soft Opening banner across the front of this new Sichuan restaurant, though rather empty was inviting enough for a Sunday family dinner. Unexpected and initially unnoticed when we entered were two Touch Screen terminals for self-service ordering, very cool! Indeed a clever solution for customers who may be deficient in Mandarin or servers who may be deficient in English! Mom is Mandarin and English fluent so no problem with our ordering. We did have to be sure there were enough vegetarian dishes for mom. No amount of convincing could get her to come back to the 'dark side' The servers were eager to do business and made a number of items vegetarian to accommodate us, way excellent! We ordered a variety of appetizers, dumplings, noodles, soup and vegetables from their menu. The Touch Screen made it too easy, as I said, very clever! I was not expecting much upon entering the restaurant because it was so empty but I figured I would give it a try since it had beef rolls. The woman behind the register said it wouldn't take long to make so I paid and slowly counted down the minutes to eat. The food was ready pretty quickly and I rushed home and was happy to see the portion size was more than I expected. I may have been hungry but I think the beef rolls exceeded expectations and could measure up to their neighbor's beef rolls. I will definitely return to give their other dishes a try. read more

I wanna give it another try, the stewed beef, but she avoided my eye contact at first, until I reminded her of not only our long conversation from last week but all those 20-30 times I've eaten here (which she had easily recalled to me only last week!), yet now she TRIED to look right past me as if I were a first-time patron, even as she wanted to take my order! She was VERY clearly playing dumb -- and I hate people like that. With a passion. Double-faced! Because she was now not alone. Just be honest! I said, Oh, now you don't remember me or our conversation? She said, No. Wow. I knew her hand. I left immediately. I went to Northern Cafe on Garfield (very good). I won't ever return here, and I have stopped recommending this place to friends who come into SGV. Walked by and saw a sign saying best dumpling in town. I had to come and compare their XLB and the one I had already ordered from 101 noodle express. The lady was so nice and she was sweet. You had to order at the machine, but she helped to confirm that the dumpling had no nuts. She then offered if we wanted to sit on her patio which was nice. Sadly the dumpling were not as great as I was hoping . I love XLB and was hoping that this would be just as tasty. Sadly it had an after taste , but it didn't really have much flavor. When I eat XLB I expect a pocket full of soup with the meat. But it just seemed like flavorless oil that came out. The meat is hard to explain in English but it was like squish. The only dish I wasn't too fond of was the sesame noodles. They were a bit dry and lacked savoriness. Noodle texture is al dente and I love getting the thick hand cut noodles. There was an article online that stated You Kitchen had the best dumplings in the San Gabriel Valley, and my friend decided that based on that article, we absolutely must try this restaurant. So we went for lunch one day. We shared the pan fried pork buns, the fennel pork dumplings, the beef roll, dan dan mian, and shanghai pork wonton soup. The pan fried pork buns were ok, but lacked the soup that I typically expect out of really good sheng jian bao. The buns weren't very juicy on the inside, unfortunately. The beef roll had a really good sauce, but I felt the scallion pancake wrap was a bit soggy and could have been crispier. The wonton soup's broth was amazing, the noodles had a good texture, but the wontosn were ok. The dan dan mian had a nice numbing spice as expected of Sichuan style noodles, and I really liked the hand pulled noodles. Overall, everything was solid. Then, the food will be brought out to you. Once done, you return to the kiosk and pay. We ordered the seaweed salad which was nice and refreshing. Shen Jian Bao or Pan Moist Fried Pork Buns were pretty good. The bottom was crispy while the top was fluffy. I would've liked a little more filling with a little more soup on the inside, but it sufficed. The XLBs were absolutely awful. The wrapper was super gummy and tasted undercooked. It was unfortunate because the flavor of the filling was pretty good. My friends and I ate one and we pretty much left the rest. I also ordered a Beef Roll to go. Church friends and I decided to come here after rave reviews from my mum when she went for lunch. My first impressions was that it was unorganized because there was only one server walking around like she didn't know what to do (this gave me anxiety) with about 4 unclean tables. The restaurant is small, so without the clean tables and with our big party, we had to wait about half an hour. While we waited, we were directed to order on their kiosk first. As expected, the English translations of the menu was poor (we used Chinese one instead). There is also a language barrier with the server that waited on us. So, if you don't speak/read Mandarin, you'll likely run into some issues. But no worries! Just order what I did and you'll be good. You pay at the kiosk too, if you're using credit card. With such a small space, it's strange that a kiosk is used for orders and payment, especially because the server helps you run your credit card anyway. Pan moist fried pork buns - these are literal CLOUDS in your mouth. Crispy bottoms and juicy pork filling. If you like a more structured/dense bao, this isn't for you. MUST ORDER Fish + chive dumplings - we got them boiled. Good but nothing special Celery pork dumplings - pan fried. Crispy and greasy, can't go wrong with that. Big mouth pocket - basically a pork filled flattened dumpling fried to perfection Shichuan dan dan noodles - got mild and it was the perfect amount of spice. The handmade noodles are a must. MUST ORDER (Shared the dishes amongst 2 guys and 2 girls and we were well fed!) Basically everything on the menu should be good as everything we tried was consistent in taste. Will be trying the spicy wontons next time and getting the dan dan noodles with regular spice level. As we had a big party that was split into 3 tables, the server wasn't sure which table would get what, so that was sort of chaotic and we were very hungry by the time we sat down so we wolfed everything down. 3.5 stars. It's right next to 101 Noodle and sells really similar food. Competition is good for the consumer, but I didn't understand the business rationale. Maybe they're hoping for overflow traffic from 101? Anyway, the place is really Chinese in style. They even have a machine as you enter that will take your order with a few taps of the screen. The directions are in Chinese, but the pictures should be helpful. Patrons can even pay with a credit card at the machine, but there is a $1 service fee for doing so. I'm not even sure how tipping would work. The owner was really friendly and helpful. Prices for similar dishes you can find at 101 are a dollar or two more here, including XLB. If you order regular dumplings, they also tack on an extra fifty cents to get them pan-fried. I like the texture of the dumpling skins. The dishes were also less salty than at 101, a plus for me. My favorite was the big mouth pocket, which is essentially ground pork and onions inside of a fried sesame-laced pita-like pastry. The pork-shrimp-chive dumplings and XLB were excellent too. Again, flavorful without being overly salty. The XLBs had the perfect amount of flexibility that held together when picked up without spilling out their contents. Lastly, I had the ZhaJiang noodles, which were my least favorite. The dish is basically boiled noodles with a thick meat-and-black-bean sauce--definitely an acquired taste. We stopped by You Kitchen on our mini dumpling tour and tried their xiao long bao and fennel pork potstickers. Both were very good quality. The XLB were definitely above average but the fennel pork potstickers were really good. They were perfectly fried on the bottom and served with a very good vinegar-based dipping sauce. Wow I really love this place! The funny thing is that the Chinese name is "grandma's kitchen" - whoever has this lady as a grandma is really lucky. The food is really smartly and expertly cooked so it feels like high quality home cooking. The big mouth pancake is thin and just the right amount of crispy. We had it with chicken and the chicken was shredded very finely (attention to detail) and perfectly seasoned. The steamed buns are also delicious and the cabbage inside was shredded very fine. So was just here for lunch on a Saturday after 130p. There were a few people standing outside. It took awhile for us to figure out where to put our nane down the old fashion way or to use their nifty machine. It was apparent once we sat down that the place was overwhelmed. Took is a few tries just to get menu. The table next to us got chopsticks and spoons themselves because the waitress was too busy. Then they messed up our order of 2 items. Dumplings and Xiao long bao worth a trip because of handmade dough. Nice. I appreciate handmade stuff from SGV. On the other hand, I was brought to this store from Eater.com which mentioned about the big meat pocket which looked delicious in pictures but ended up being dry (especially the meat inside) and pushed me to get a cup of water to wash it down. Aside from the food, I have two big gripes about this restaurant and both relate to service and operations. The lady that was running the front counter and possibly the owner had the audacity to do two things, which is an unspoken no-no in the restaurant industry: 1. As a customer, she actually asked me in Chinese to manage a take out order for her over the phone, specifically in English because she was incapable. The customer proceeded to hang up because I said I was a customer and didn't work there but was willing to take the order. Probably a customer who was convinced by the Eater article. 2. Another customer complained to the front counter lady about not getting raw garlic on the side for their order at my neighboring table. So, instead of getting some new garlic, she proceeded to take the garlic from my table which I was about to use and gave it to them without asking! There has to be some health code violation that relates to this like... "feeding customers with other customer's food." Aside from these two blaring issues, you can tell there were a few other problems: - Her back cook seems like she was still figuring things out based on the Chinese instructions that was given by the front counter lady - Customers with take out orders kept complaining about when their orderwas ready (bad time and expectation management) - Forgetting what customers requested (water, dishes, etc.) - Ordering kiosk could be better labeled so customers know what to do The restaurant seriously needs to get their operations and management in order. This place does not get the credit it deserves. They're next to 101 noodle express so the attention is taken from this place but they're overrated compared to you kitchen. I absolutely love this place. My husband and I came for lunch one afternoon because we saw some photos of their dishes pop up on yelp. When you go in, you're immediately directed to place your order on a machine. Once you order, you sit at the table you chose and wait for the food to come. Pros: the food. We got the spicy wontons, the sesame green onion pizza, the big mouth pocket, and xiao long bao. The wontons are wrapped smaller than I expected but there is a nice flavor and spice kick to the sauce. My favorite is the sesame onion pizza. I love love love that it's so simple, crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy in the inside, with just a touch of salt. The big mouth pocket is filled with herbs and meat, very nicely seasoned. The xiao long bao is wrapped with very thin skin, so it can easily rip but the flavor of the meat is amazing, the skin ripping is usually hit or miss. Cons: they dont seem like they have enough staff. The cashier works in the front and in the kitchen, and sometimes when no one watches the dining room diners can walk out without paying. Everything here was phenomenal. We can't wait to go back and try more items off the menu. Each item we got tasted super unique from each other and they were all great. Came around 12:45 pm on a Saturday and luckily, there was a table that's about to leave. This place has a new concept where you order through a machine. I'm not entirely opposed to this, but it might be helpful to have some paper menus for customers to look at while waiting to order on the machine. It might also be helpful to have some instructions posted on the side to explain how to use the machine because it took us a while to figure out how to use the machine and order. We ordered the pork cabbage dumplings, green onion pork buns, and sesame chinese pizza. Once we were seated, it took about 10 minutes for us to get our dumplings, and then it took another 20 minutes to get our buns and pizza. They weren't incredibly busy, so I have no idea why it took so long for us to get our food. There staff were nice, but they weren't very attentive and never came to check on us even once. The good thing was that every item we ordered came out piping hot. The dumplings came out on a plate that allowed for the excess water to drip down, which I thought was kind of cool. However, the dumplings were too salty for my liking and the filling was definitely on the oily side. The buns came out larger than I expected and even though the filling was not too heavy and the bread was nice and fluffy, it was also on the oily side. My fav was the sesame chinese pizza, which is more like sesame scallion bread. They panfried both sides so it was nice and crispy on the outside, but still fluffy on the inside. The scallion was seasoned with a little bit of salt and scattered inside the bread so I tasted the scallion in every bite. We wanted to eat noodles for Chinese New Year so we decided to go to 101, but they didnt have many vegetarian options. We went a few doors down to check out the touchscreen menu at You Kitchen. They didn't have many vegetarian options either, but we felt awkward leaving, so we ordered the hand-pulled noodles with plain broth, veggie buns and pan fried chive hand dumplings. The lady was very nice and she tried to help us with the menu, but she didnt speak much English. We did tell her we did not eat meat. When we got our food our noodles had all kinds of beef in it, not like the pictures! We decided to just take the beef out and eat the noodles. I liked the chewy hand-pulled noodles. The pan fried hand dumplings with egg and chive was my favorite thing we got. I liked the wrapper, it was crisp and fresh. The veggie steamed buns were a little over steamed, so top was hard.
