When we paid and she came to pick up the check she said "you give me tip" we said we were going to leave cash. When we were about ready to leave, again she came and said "you leave me tip, propina (tip in Spanish) THIS IS VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I was only getting ready to leave I wasn't leaving yet. You should not be asking me to give you your tip or to leave you a tip. The way she acted made me not want to tip her at ALL. This place was great. And very inexpensive. Went here at lunchtime to see the place fill up by noon. I ordered a sashimi appetizer with 5 kinds of fish. The pieces were $1 each and of good size plus were very tasty. Added a Miso soup as well which was delicious. All their rolls are 1/2 off the menus listed prices so I went ahead and ordered a Rainbow and Unagi (eel) roll. Hard to finish everything by myself as portions were satisfying. Best prices on sushi anywhere in SLC area. Always very busy. They sell so much sashimi that they can't help but have fresh product and a large selection. Their rolls are well plated but nothing to fancy and the rice is often packed to light so it falls apart, but they have large portions for the price and it always taste good. Wine selection is terrible. The servers are always extremely busy so occasionally you have to wait longer then you may like, but they do try very hard to serve and most are very kind and respectful. My son and I love coming in for a huge sushi/sashimi meal that would break the bank anywhere else. We sit at the sushi bar and watch sports on the two TVs. A few months back I paid cash $20 and counting my money I got back, the waitress took 4 extra dollars so I didn't tip because she took it herself. I actually really liked Yi. I thought it was an excellent place to get good sushi for a good price. Their service, particularly their wait times, is so inconsistent that I can no longer recommend people come here. I am currently waiting for a to go order that I made over twenty minutes ago. The restaurant is not busy, my order is not complicated, but it is not here. The wait staff is completely ignoring me. I'm about to leave, sans food, because I have somewhere else to be and I wasn't anticipating a to go order from a non-busy restaurant to take so long. Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened, but it will be the last, because I likely won't be returning. I go pretty far out of my way to go to this restaurant because I thought it was worth it, but I feel incredibly unvalued. I have been to Yi four times now, and it has been quite good every single time. The service is always very good. The staff is usually attentive, despite the fact that they're always busy. There's usually somewhat of a language gap, since most of the staff are Japanese; however, I've never had a problem with any of the servers not being able to understand me. The food is always really good, and I can easily fill up for less than $10. Keep in mind that this is not wold-class, five-star sushi, but it Is really tasty and I always feel like I get way more than I pay for. I have only ever tried the sushi, so I don't know anything about their other menu items. Honestly, why would you go to a sushi restaurant and get orange chicken? Anyway, the sushi is definitely worth a shot. My personal recommendation is the spicy scallop roll; I have to get it every time. Top of the line cheap sushi! They're always busy and the quality is consistent. We usually spend less than $15 for two people and we're stuffed when we're finished. This is my go-to when I have a craving and I usually opt for a couple of the $4 (actually $2) rolls and some soup and the soup is a big serving! Oh no! Can't believe I didn't review this two days ago when I came here for dinner and added the business here on Yelp ... just what happens when you wait a little too long...! This place is amazingly affordable. They're offering 50% off all rolls now, but really the rolls are $6 tp $10 so they're not crazy expensive to begin with. I don't know if anyone is familiar with Red Ginger Bistro on 3500 South and State Street, but this place is just the same, but without the crowd, long waiting line and crowded parking lot. Same, or even better rolls, with an outstanding service! Same owners, they just wanted to offer a bigger space. When you walk in it's just like deja-vu from Red Ginger - although I prefer the tall booths this Yi Sushi Bistro has, it offers more privacy (compared to Red Ginger Bistro), so we're not all staring at each other when we eat and elbowing the person on the next table. I would say it's appropiate for kids, because it allows them to be a little louder than a normal polite adult and my son was content just watching videos on his ipod while we waiting 5 minutes for our food, without disrupting other guests. The staff was so friendly and accomodating, the rolls were delicious... and honestly nothing tastes better than good food with a tiny price tag, and with a great service I was just floating on a cloud when I left there. This is really good sushi for the price. It's one of the "half off" joints in the valley (why do they do that??), and I think it's the best of the bunch. It tastes good and you can really get your fill. Does it have that aesthetic finesse you look for in great sushi? No. It's basic rolls plopped on a plastic tray, but for the price it's still a good meal. I loved my rainbow roll and the spicy tuna was pretty good. The miso soup was...miso soup (hard to mess that one up), and all in all I was really pleased with my meal. When I just want to stuff my face, I'm planning to go again. The sushi here is relatively good for the price. Sashimi and nigiri are $1 each, while rolls are 50% off, making them about $4-8 dollars a roll! The spider roll was ok, however I don't recall ever seeing romaine lettuce in a sushi roll. Surprisingly, it wasn't all that bad. The devils tower roll (deep fried), was rather mushy. I'm guessing the deep frying process probably trapped too much water in the roll, making rice quite soggy. The Salt Lake roll was one that was pretty good and might be worth a try. I sampled several other rolls as well (I went with a group) and they seemed to be pretty good. If it's someone's birthday, they'll turn down the lights, put on the strobe lights, and turn on a birthday song. Instantly turning a typical sushi restaurant into poppin' club LOL +awesome points LOL!!! They also brought some chocolate mocha ice cream (with a candle) for my friend's birthday, which was nice. One of my favorite places to get good, affordable sushi. I go to this place at least 4 times a month. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The sushi is not the best, but it's REALLY DANG GOOD. And who can pass up a bargain?! I remember being amazed at getting 4 quality sushi rolls for under $20 total! That's just crazy, but at Yi Sushi it's always 50% off, so that's awesome.
