Yen Cheng has lost our business altogether now because their ordering system (Foodappx) is dysfunctional, has been for months, and they've done nothing to resolve the problem. The downloadable app is no better. This system is so poor (assuming you are actually able to log in) that I do not trust adding my credit card info. Grandma absolutely LOVED this place and we would order about once a week (to the point that after I moved and moved back, they recognized me!) We would have the occasional issue like any restaurant you frequent, but the corrections were always quick and satisfying. We lost grandma this week and to celebrate her life, we decided to order from her favorite take out restaurant. We have loved Yen Ching for many years. Yen Ching was intentionally the first restaurant we went to after the pandemic subsided. Gotta say that after 30 plus years eating here and probably 500+ meals, we have had a few lackluster meals in a row lately. And that bothers me. Yes, the service is still great and the immutable interior of the restaurant is as familiar as home. But the food may be starting to slip. Most recent visit, our party of three ordered three different mainstream soups (wonton, hot n sour, egg drop.) All three came out just above room temp. I know how soup is held in kitchens (unless they nuke it) and there is no explanation for this other than the warmers are set too low. My wife's orange beef came out tough and flavorless. My moo shu had a lot more cabbage in the cabbage-to-pork ratio than I am used to, and the side of fried rice had never seen a wok or flat top -- it was simply tanner than the steamed rice my wife got. Even the shrimp fried rice our dining partner ordered was lacking in shrimp and flavor. While the appetizer platter (pu pu platter in the old descriptions) was as good as usual, it didn't make up for the rest. For $100 plus tax and tip for 3, food should not be readily perceived as cutting corners. I would chalk this up to a bad night, except that it brings back memories of the previous meal here, which also seemed to be short of what we have grown accustomed to. This was my first time at Yen Ching, after seeing it recommended on a local Facebook group. We've been going to another place for years, and this was said to be comparable - which it was! The pricing was fair, and the quality was great. My orange chicken was so crispy and had a thick sauce. The honey chicken was a unique flavor and was done well. The inside of the building looked very cool, but I opted for pickup - which was a quick and easy process from online to getting the meal in-person. My only setback would be the portion size compared to others in the area, but those places had lower quality, so the tradeoff of less for better was worth it. Yen Ching is a West End staple. My friends and family have been coming here or getting take out since the 80's or 90's. The food is always so good. In fact a friend of mine called me this week and asked if I would pick up Yen Ching and bring it to his place for our dinner as he lives in Rocketts Landing and there aren't any near him half as good as Yen Ching. So I ordered my favorites of Orange Chicken, Ginger Shrimp & Moo Shu Pork with fried rice and egg rolls. I had to request not spicy as my friend can't handle the heat. They did a great job toning it down as he loved every dish and complimented every bite. Plus the best thing about mix & matching is we had plenty of left overs for another night. The gentleman at the front desk/register is always polite & welcoming. He asks you to check your order that it's correct then takes care of any additional needs before you head off with your well packed meal. I haven't eaten inside in a while but it still has the same charm of the lit fountain and tradition Chinese restaurant décore but it doesn't feel dated to me. Just friendly and comforting. I need to schedule a sit down meet up here with my friends soon. There is nothing more fun that trying each others dishes and finding something new to enjoy. read more

I've been coming here my whole life and Wayne is always happy to greet every customer. The food is your classic americanized Chinese food. For appetizers I love the hot and sour soup. It comes with fried wonton chips which are fantastic. The fried egg rolls are also great. For mains I love the 5 Taste Chicken or Shrimp, Hunan Combination in a Birds Nest, and the Orange Sauce dishes. What has happened to Yen Ching? We had not ordered carry out from here since 2020 because we were disappointed then. But I like to give a restaurant a second chance, so we ordered from there tonight: two individual soups (Wonton and Hot & Sour), and Kung Pao Chicken. In a word, everything was bland. I have been a customer of Yen Ching for over ten years now and I know they have been around for a long time. I heard about them from some close family friends who raved a lot the place, and it did not disappoint. I will continue to return due to the quality of food and service. The restaurant itself is always clean, and I am a massive fan of the retro ambiance. It looks as if not much has changed since the place first opened other than the carpet, but I mean that in a nice way. I feel like many modern restaurants have a cold feel to them and Yen Ching has a warm feeling. The food is always high in quality, much better than the typical Chinese take-out place. I have gotten a variety of dishes ranging from American Chinese classics like the General Tso's Chicken, Orange Chicken, and Crispy Honey Shrimp to more traditional ones such as Mapo Tofu, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, Peking Duck, and so forth. All of them are great. The menu also has vegetarian options that are nicely prepared. I am not a massive meat eater and love vegetables and tofu and find their vegetarian options to be lovely. Yen Ching is not a buffet style restaurant either, but rather a classic sit-down establishment, and they do take-out as well. Yen Ching is like Peking in Williamsburg back in the day before they had the buffet when my family used to go in the 1980s and 1990s, for those who are familiar with that spot. They even bring duck sauce, spicy mustard, and fried wonton strips to the table and fresh oranges after your meal. I must also note that we have had numerous parties and events there and they have always been handled nicely with the food still coming out quickly to a high quality level. They have an area of the restaurant that is divided from the rest of the main dining room where they are able to push the tables together, but definitely call in advance. Yen Ching used to be one of my favorite Chinese restaurants, but after my experience tonight that has changed. Apparently, the restaurant is under new ownership. I went out with four of my friends and my wife tonight for dinner. We previously had gone to Yen Ching and enjoyed it many times. Although the waiter was attentive and service was good, unfortunately, my wife found a wrapper to a straw in her food. When this was brought to the waiters attention. He told us that he would take the dinner off the check. However, the new owner would only give us five dollars off. Since we were a table of six he still charged us a 20% gratuity. That brought the bill to $58 including tip. The new owner explained that since the straw wrapper was dry, it indicated that it was not cooked with the food and therefore he would only take five dollars off the bill and that was the best he would do. Any other place that I have ever been has not charged me for a meal that was not to my complete satisfaction. Finding something that is not food on a dinner plate is not satisfactory. in addition, under new ownership, the food has definitely gone downhill. The soup was watery. The eggrolls were tasteless, and the food was not as fresh and tasty as it used to be. All in all this was a very disappointing dinner and my wife and I and my friends will not be returning to Yen Ching anymore. read more

My apologies in advance as this might be a bit of a long read. I live in Norfolk now, but I was born and raised in Richmond. Growing up in the 70s and 80s when there was a plethora of good sit down Chinese restaurants. We were actually spoiled for choice. Unfortunately, because of the sheer number of them several ended up shutting down. One of them is still there and better than ever and that's Yen Ching on the corner of W Broad and Tuckernuck. Let's start with the criminally low rating of 3.7 currently on Yelp. I wouldn't drive an hour and 45 minutes to Richmond several times a year for a 3.7 anything. This spot has the BEST Chinese food in Virginia. Yeah you might get the grumpy waitress that never smiles but you know what? She's been there for close to 40 years and she knows her $hit. Yeah you might wait a few extra minutes for your food but that's because they're not gonna use old burnt oil that they cooked everything else in. I could cover several other complaints in the reviews, but I won't waste my time. I'll cut to the chase on why it's the best. I've literally eaten here close to 1000 times since the early 80s. Yen Ching is a staple of the west end. I've come here for afternoon lunches, Sunday dinner, birthday parties, anniversary parties, family, gatherings, takeout, you name it. If you're looking for cheap knock off, run-of-the-mill Chinese, you're not gonna get it here. This place has been family, owned and operated since it opened and their recipes are handed down over generations. Their menu and staff rarely changes because they don't need to. The same gentleman has worked the front desk for as long as I can remember. I've lived 100 miles away for the last 25 years yet he still remembers my name when I call or visit. More importantly, he still remembers my mom who I went there with for decades. She passed away five years ago an I mis her every day. He tells me how much he misses her too every time I see him or talk to him on the phone. He Personally goes to the kitchen to make sure our food is prepared to order when he doesn't have to bother. That level of customer service is impossible to find just about anywhere else. Anytime my wife or I go back to Richmond we don't come back home without either eating at Yen Ching or grabbing takeout. The experience is a throwback to the days where eating out at a Chinese restaurant was actually an event not just a GrubHub order. The decor has not changed, nor should it, and the restaurant is always clean and beautiful. The food is prepared with the highest quality fresh ingredients, and the greatest attention to detail every single time. The service might not always be overly friendly, but it is always excellent, I can count on one finger the time it wasn't as good as usual. That was after a long drive back to Norfolk and when I called to tell them about it, they comped us our meal on our next visit. They take pride in everything they do and it shows. Now for the food. THE greatest American style Chinese you will ever eat. The sweet-and-sour chicken is all white meat. Super crispy and covered in house made, sweet-and-sour sauce with pineapple, carrots, onions, and green peppers that are perfect al dente. The Triple Delight is one of the greatest Chinese food dishes in America. Shrimp with lobster sauce? GTFOH you won't find it better anywhere. The eggrolls are crisp, fresh and juicy. The wonton soup will make your eyes roll into the back of your head. The crispy wonton noodles are made in house to order. Even the Duck sauce they serve you is out of this world. Don't skip a pot of their hot tea either, I promise you won't regret it. I could go on and on but nothing on their menu is anything short of delicious. To wrap it up if anyone is an expert on this incredible spot it's me and my family. Trust me when I tell you that you will never regret a trip to Yen Ching in Henrico. Don't believe me? Tell the gentleman at the front desk that Chris Linzey told you to check them out. I literally just stuffed myself to the gills with a takeout order that my wife picked up today while she was in town and brought back home. I wasn't too happy with the food at Yen Ching during my last visit, this place used to be so good! We were promptly seated upon arrival but it seems like there was only one waiter handling all of the tables and he did a wonderful job managing it all. It took a long time for our food to come out, even our soups took about 30 minutes. The crabmeat asparagus soup lacked flavor and the asparagus seemed really old. We ordered family style and got the following: - chicken stir-fried with string beans - this was pretty good and was flavorful, string beans were fresh -general tso's chicken - juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside, this dish is pretty consistent every time we come here -Singapore noodles - this was a huge disappointment - it lacked flavor and the noodles were really wet/mushy -crispy honey shrimp - this dish was alright; I was surprised with how little shrimp it comes with. You won't get your money's worth with this one I've seen better days at Yen Ching's and hope I just caught them on a bad day. I'm not sure when I'll be back. read more

In addition, they have vegetable egg rolls (not just spring rolls which is what most places only have) that are thick and crispy and delicious! "Okay Chinese food with good ambiance..." We were there on one important occasion. I have decided to go there by reading reviews but somehow I am not satisfied that much. 3/5 would be my rating. We ordered Crispy Honey Chicken, Five Taste Chicken, Lemon Chicken, Lo Mein, Chicken Fried Rice with hot and sour soup. They claim five taste chicken is their specialty but it was just chicken breast chunk in honey/bbq sauce. Everything was okay, not great in taste. The server was very rude to us. We asked do you have coke, he replied in one word-'Pepsi'. Again, we asked do u have coke, he again replied- 'Pepsi'. Dude tell us we don't keep coke, why you are confusing us. In a nutshell, Yen Ching is a great place to eat! The servers and owners are friendly and want to please you. The orders always come out right! The ambiance is nice too - certainly a place you could go to on a date. The food is fine and the selections are ample. The lunch special is a great deal for the generous selection and ample food. Everything is always tasty. The only reason I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars -- there are only a couple vegan selections, in addition to the veggie eggroll. We come here about every 10 days, but would definitely come more often if there were more plant-based options. Step it up Yen Ching - this is 2022. We got general Tso's chicken, potstickers, fried rice and egg rolls. We were very disappointed. I only have about a 15 minute drive home from here but the food was very stale tasting. Worst. Chinese food. Ever .... at Yen Ching W. Broad location I've eaten at their other locations (Hull St., Midlothian Tnpk.) on multiple occasions for last 3 decades. It was always competent and instantly recognizable Chinese version of comfort food that I've come to appreciate. At the West Broad location, the food was just TERRIBLE. It looked and tasted nothing like what we had at their other locations. Every single dish we ordered was bad except for one, Hunan shrimp and it was just OK. They gave us Sichuan beef when we ordered Hunan beef. And it was lacking vegetables that usually come with Sichuan beef. Their Mongolian beef was unrecognizable and flavorless. Their signature Yen Ching soup was also awful, nothing like their counterpart at other locations. Hot and sour soup was very bland and didn't have that rich brown color. Mapo tofu was watery and bland, utterly lacking in any hint of spice, with cosistency more like a soup. Sesame chicken was soggy and also bland. They did not even include any utensils in our carrryout order. This was by far the worst Chinese carryout experience ever. read more
