A very good Chinese restaurant! The atmosphere is unique and inviting, while the food is delicious as well. The Peking dumplings were on the smaller side, though, especially for the price. The homestyle bean curd dish was amazing, the texture of the fried tofu and the sauce went well together.

This was my first time at Yen Ching, after seeing it recommended on a local Facebook group. We've been going to another place for years, and this was said to be comparable - which it was! The pricing was fair, and the quality was great. My orange chicken was so crispy and had a thick sauce. The honey chicken was a unique flavor and was done well. The inside of the building looked very cool, but I opted for pickup - which was a quick and easy process from online to getting the meal in-person. My only setback would be the portion size compared to others in the area, but those places had lower quality, so the tradeoff of less for better was worth it. Will definitely be ordering again soon!

The ambience is great, if you like kitschy. The food is pretty good, the egg roll and lo mein especially. The general tso's wasn't the best. The service was super fast.

A local STAPLE. This restaurant is an absolute gem. The service is phenomenal and the food is EVEN BETTER. Best traditional Chinese food in the area. Don't bother going anywhere else!!! Whether you're craving take out or dine in,you will never be disappointed. 100000% APPROVED

I have been a customer of Yen Ching for over ten years now and I know they have been around for a long time. I heard about them from some close family friends who raved a lot the place, and it did not disappoint. I will continue to return due to the quality of food and service. The restaurant itself is always clean, and I am a massive fan of the retro ambiance. It looks as if not much has changed since the place first opened other than the carpet, but I mean that in a nice way. I feel like many modern restaurants have a cold feel to them and Yen Ching has a warm feeling. The food is always high in quality, much better than the typical Chinese take-out place. I have gotten a variety of dishes ranging from American Chinese classics like the General Tso's Chicken, Orange Chicken, and Crispy Honey Shrimp to more traditional ones such as Mapo Tofu, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, Peking Duck, and so forth. All of them are great. The menu also has vegetarian options that are nicely prepared. I am not a massive meat eater and love vegetables and tofu and find their vegetarian options to be lovely. Yen Ching is not a buffet style restaurant either, but rather a classic sit-down establishment, and they do take-out as well. Yen Ching is like Peking in Williamsburg back in the day before they had the buffet when my family used to go in the 1980s and 1990s, for those who are familiar with that spot. They even bring duck sauce, spicy mustard, and fried wonton strips to the table and fresh oranges after your meal. I must also note that we have had numerous parties and events there and they have always been handled nicely with the food still coming out quickly to a high quality level. They have an area of the restaurant that is divided from the rest of the main dining room where they are able to push the tables together, but definitely call in advance. Yen Ching is my first choice for a restaurant in the Richmond area. Always!

And it's not dumbed down American Chinese at all. My husband and I both work from home so we get to go have lunch at area restaurants from time to time. We have our regular places and we order Peter Chang's for takeout sometimes, but when we were deciding where to eat and knowing we were short on time, I suggested Peter Chang. For our meal we ordered dumplings, which were amazing. The dipping sauce was to die for...I need to research it and try to make it. We also got the scallion pancake, which came with a curry dipping sauce. Also very good. For lunch there is a menu that is typical of Chinese restaurants where you get a choice of soup (I chose hot and sour) and rice (I chose white rice). For my main I selected hot and numbing chicken from the lunch menu. My husband got three pepper steak. We also got jasmine tea, although if you prefer an adult beverage they have a bar. The food was excellent, service was attentive but not overbearing. It was a great meal and we both have lots of leftovers. The restaurant can be a bit noisy because it's just a big open room, but it's okay. The table next to use was loud talkers with no inside voice, so I got to hear all about their trip to Charlottesville for a concert. Sounds like they had a good time. I wish people were more self-aware about the volume of their voices in public but maybe his ears were wrecked from the concert. P.S. Peter Chang was the chef to a Chinese dignitary like an ambassador so he's the real deal.

It had too much soy sauce and you couldn't taste anything else. The white rice was dry and undercooked. I feel like this is an utter travesty. I was at least expecting good rice. The golden mountain had great flavor but I think it was a mistake to eat it at home. It was mushy by the time we ate it. You can taste the spite in general Tso's chicken. It's like they don't want you to order it. The flavor is just sweet without any complexity. I've had better flavored general Tso sauce from grocery store brands. It was also mushy by the time we ate it. I would never order this again from them.

The interesting thing about placing the order is that you also pay when the order is placed, then they bring the food out when it's made. They were helpful in explaining to me how to modify a dish and they also gave great recommendations, as well as kept up with my liking of the food and experience while I was there. I ordered their red oil wontons and their cumin lamb noodles, but I subbed the lamb for beef. This came out before the wontons and it looked and smelled great! The beef was very tender, so were the amazing noodles! The spices were so tasty and offered a decent kick, but not too hot. I love stir-fried onions in dishes like this and these were so good that I tried to enjoy one piece with each bite of noodle and beef. The red oil wontons were incredible! The flavor of the oil was perfect! Exactly what it should be and it offered a very nice kick of heat too! This was one of the best wontons I've had in a long time! I'd definitely like to go back and try their soup dumplings. Overall this was a great experience into non-American Chinese food, one that everyone who enjoys American Chinese food should try!

Walking in, it was completely empty, no customers. By the time I left, several tables were sat and they had a steady stream of carry-out/delivery pickups. The service was very spotty, as they only had two people working the dining room and so many people went without someone checking them in, I waited about 15 mins for my check and those delivery drivers formed a line waiting for their pickups. I tried their spicy cucumber salad and their three pepper beef, but I sub'd out the beef for chicken instead. The cucumbers were decent, they had a nice spice to them and the vegetable itself was fresh. The three pepper chicken came out on a sizzling platter (a fajita platter with aluminum foil on it) and looked pretty good. My first few bites had the great flavor of wok hei, which I love! But I quickly noticed there was no other flavor other than some sort of pickled pepper flavor, which is very odd in Chinese food. The chicken texture was great, but the entire dish was swimming in vegetal oil, it wasn't dry spiced and wok'd. Overall, this visit was only slightly better than the first, only because they were open this time. But I most definitely wouldn't return. I absolutely love and seek out authentic Chinese foods (Szechuan, Hunan, etc) when I travel and those this place offers many authentic style dishes, they seem a little too "Americanized."

I believe the original was on Grove where EAT Partner's Beijing on Grove is now located. I stopped in for a take-out order. I ordered Gen Tso's Chicken, hot and sour soup, fried rice, pork lo mein and a shrimp spring roll. The General Tso's chicken was awful. The chicken was a mushy clump of cubed, fried chicken. The chicken was no longer crisp (I've brought home or had delivered Gen Tso's and Orange Chicken in which the batter was still crisp, so no excuse for this when I was only about 3 miles from home). The chicken was swimming in a thick, overly sweet sauce that had WAY too much cornstarch. The fried rice *looked* like it would be good, but I have a feeling the dark color was mostly from dark/black soy sauce which mostly gives color to a dish. The rice was literally tasteless. I had to add some low-sodium soy to give it some flavor. The pork lo mein was equally as tasteless as the fried rice. The slices of roast pork were so dry that without dipping it into some sauce (which looked like extra oil on the bottom of the container), it got stuck in my throat. I make my own roast pork for making my own egg rolls and it's a ton more flavorful than this was. The shrimp roll has some shrimp in it, though I couldn't really taste it. Biting into the spring roll released a bunch of oil onto the wrapper. Not very appetizing. The ONLY decent thing in the order was the hot and sour soup. It had a good balance of heat, and vinegar. I think I tasted some bamboo shoots, and there may have been some mushrooms, but really good hot & sour (like I've had in Chinatown in NY, San Francisco and Washington D.C.) has tree ear mushrooms (also known as black fungus), dried lily flowers, and other ingredients that I didn't see or taste in this soup. But it was NOT too thick which was great as some restaurants use too much cornstarch. This was a lunch combo (Gen Tso, fried rice, hot and sour soup) and the lo mein and shrimp roll was separate. All in all, the total was just over $24 and definitely not worth it. I can't see going back to this restaurant again.
