A-Ok Not my favorite Nicaraguan joint, but does quite well when the munchies hit at 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning. They have an indoor restaurant, but I've only eaten from the outside, cafeteria-style food line. It's not bad. I usually just let my husband order for me. Although I think it's pretty close to authentic Nica food, I don't like all their plates that I would normally like in Nicaragua, particularly because the food is not made to order, and often it has been sitting there for a while - especially when you go at the time I normally go. The place is very "pintoresco" it definitely has a lot of character and a lot of characters. If you've never tried Nica food, I recomend the chanco frito (fried pork) y gallo pinto (rice & beans mixed in), or the fajitas - which are not like fajitas at all, but the meat is still pretty good. Don't forget to order the fried cheese, and a side of cream for the sweet plantains. It is cash only, and there are two "windows" one for food, another for drinks. One day I'll try the restaurant; maybe food a la carte is fresher. For now I'll stick to my early morning/late night visits. read more

Yes!! I'm laying down the 5 stars for Yambo!! After my second visit (much more sober this time) I am even more completely in LOVE, LOVE, LOVE with their yummy raisin sprinkled dishes. When you walk inside you are completely swept away in all the beautiful pieces on the walls that cover just about every square inch of space inside. This makes me very happy. Know what else makes me very happy??? Queso Frita!! And heaps and heaps of food (two peeps could split on dish easily) for the low low lunch price of $5.50!! Oh hell yes! I have the I'm definitely going to throw Yambo into my lunchtime rotation, since it's already added to the late-night-after-bar list. I've been going to Yambo since I was a kid. I believe that they have the best authentic Nicaraguan food in town (even better than Los Ranchos). One would say that being born there might make me an expert. They also have really good all-natural juices. The outside (takeout) portion is open 24 hours but the inside dining room portion isn't. If you get a chance I would suggest inside unless you don't feel like tipping anyone. We were also surprised that they also had a lot of vegetarian options... we go there whenever I get a chance to pass by that part of town! The location: a very sketchy part of the city indeed though you can't help but to feel safe with all the people around and there's also a security guard. The venue: an overly decorated, colorful, and picturesque place, an excellent attempt at portraying the country in their restaurant. The ambiance: very casual (I'm pretty sure I'm using that term loosely), please don't get decked out to eat here. The crowd: expect all sorts of people from families with annoying kids, to tipsy construction workers, to a young group of teens with the munchies. Needless to say, I doubt this is where you will meet "the one". The food is great and very very cheap; around $7 for a large plate that will more than likely feed 2. Great Nicaraguan restaurant that is open 24 hours! Formidable latin competitor in the 24 hours restaurant scene (which is still abysmally small outside of Miami Beach). If you want to drink something, get the passion fruit drink, not the barley. (Sorry, there are spanish names for these, but I cannot recall as the Nicaraguans have their own unique vocabulary for these common latin american fruits). I think passion fruit is calala in Nicaraguan Spanish. Anyways, the star is the food (sorry, you little hungry cute stray cat)! Try ordering indoors as I think a menu is provided (but I am not 100% sure as I ordered outside). The reason I say this is because it can be very confusing to know what you can order as there is no menu or board suggesting what is being offered. Yet the line is very long as people love this place! Of course you can always say "I want what that guy is getting!" But anyways, it's a colorful and casual place. And for food, try anything that has carne asada (car-nay asah-dah) as it seems to be what this place is famous for. LEARN how to say it or you won't get anything right! Say it, and then just nod your head if they ask you anything else and you'll get what you want. And you'll just fork over $5 to the lady behind an old vintage non-electric cashier with numbers that rolls (yes, it still works surprisingly) for a huge plate of carne asada with two sides. And that's right, no tax! Also, the tacos with pollo (chicken) are much like taquitos. They're good with the salsa (sauce). But if I had a choice between carne asada and tacos, I would stick with the carne asada - what can I say, I LOVE beef! The rest of the food is just plain or mediocre. There may be some better surprises that I haven't tried yet. The yuca is good and so are the plantains (an acquired taste). The only thing that I didn't like by far was the ensalada (salad) which was just shredded cabbage and I just don't like cabbage without any hint of dressing by itself. But all in all, try to go with a Latin American (preferably Nica) friend, and you'll enjoy the place and the low prices! note: this place is zagat-rated, if that means anything. Also... CASH only! REVISITED: The fried cheese was good (make sure it's not 'salado' or salty), and so were the black beans. And order a nacatamal - it's a good Nicaraguan style tamale with a chunk of pork. read more

Ummm what can I say? The food is ok, the service is bleh, they rush you to pick whatever you want to eat, this lady was rushing me and yelling at me, did not appreciate that at all. To be completely honest I think I rather wait in line at Pinolandia, I think the food is better and it looks cleaner also. I have been coming here since I was 5 years old! My parents are Nicaraguan and every time someone asks me to explain Nicaraguan cuisine I'm at a loss for words. It's delicious food and no not all central American food is the same. I love the tacos, enchiladas, Nacatamales (they're didn't from Mexican tamales) and carne asada. All of these are great choices and they're big, satisfying dishes! To drink I opt for the red soda Milca or Cacao. The place will definitely give you the colorfully spirited Nicaraguan culture. Whenever you are in the need of good Nicaraguan comfort food this is the place. Huge plates of food for incredibly small prices. I had the Carne Asada as everyone seems to recommend it. This was very good and like most other plates it came with a huge amount of gallo pinto (red beans and rice), tajadas (plaintain chips), cheese and a very tangy Nica coleslaw. I couldn't get over this mountain of food for $5.50. The decor is lets just call it Central American eccentric and a blast to explore. This is one of the more interesting places to eat in Miami, a city that really that should be better known as a tropical "paradise" desert for foodies. Either things in the city are good and expensive, or cheap and not very good. El Yambo seems to be an exception: the food is good and cheap. No, but it's open 24/7 which is a big plus in my book and a welcome alternative to those Cuban food joints that just don't do it for me anymore. Was it cheap? YES! Carne Asada, a mountain of rice, cole-slaw like salad, and your choice of a side all for $5.50.. Not bad! And this was pretty late at night, when a lot of the other Fritangas are closed. We ordered in the outside part of the place, which can be scary to the un-initiated. I was on the hunt for a late night cheap spot for awhile. Yambo's has excellent home style Honduran cooking. The portions are quite big and everything tasted fresh. And thank goodness they have outdoor seating because the decor inside is pure madness! And creepy! Every square inch is covered by all sorts of pictures, statues and well things! I only stepped inside because they didn't have a menu available at the outside counter. I have heard and seen the service in Miami is just bad on a whole but so far Yambo's is at the top. There were 4 waitresses sitting at the small bar inside the restaurant. When I walked in, they didn't even turn their head! I then asked for a menu and the waitress replied, "Come and grab one". My mouth dropped but I was hungry and didn't care to say anything about it. When ordering the servers at the counter were pretty friendly and even nicer when we told them the food was delicious. This place is weird. It's a hole in the wall that looks like it's in a 3rd world country. That being said, it does have a certain charm. For many, that charm will charm you to walk in and right back out. But, if you want decent Nicaraguan food 24 hours a day, this is your place. It can be hit on the way home from most of the places you might be late night after everything else is closed. As I walked in the door here I noticed that the food was already made. Also, the employees rushed me along in my ordering. It took a bit for me to order, because the food didn't look very good. Needed some late night food to battle the two or three...or four cocktails we had had while venturing out from our hotel near the airport in Miami. After walking around aimlessly for miles in little Havana trying to find a late night Cuban spot that Apple Maps claimed was near and OPEN, we decided Siri is a vindictive wench and was simply mocking us. I've been coming here since 1997 and I can say it's not as great as it used to be. The cacao is still #1 but the quality of the food has suffered over the years. The meat I was served was pretty much raw and the beans weren't cooked. Out of the many times I've been here this was the 1st time i had an experience like that. I'm fairly certain Spanish is required for ordering. I recommend picking up Rosetta Stone or bringing a friend to translate. Let it be known that this is a positive trait. When you first pull up you might be turned off by the eclectic decor (think Latin American flea market). Again, don't let it steer you away. The ambiance is what makes this place 5 stars. That and the giant wooden bowl of hot sauce and onions in the middle of each outdoor table, screaming potential health code violation (which I'm sure the owners don't give a fuck about because it's Yambo and who's going to mess with Yambo). Lastly, the food. Don't get me wrong, it's no French Laundry or Bern's Steakhouse, but it's damn good for what it is and the value is incredible. They don't try to pretend they're something else, which is ironic for it being a Miami gem. Rather, they embrace their food, put a bunch of weird shit on the walls, keep the cost low, change for nobody, and for that have become one of the most unique cultural experiences in Miami. Yambo is a 24-hour hole in the wall that offers authentic Nicaraguan food. It is located in a shady neighborhood, but don't be afraid to stop by and park in the lot because a security guard is always on the premises. The whole place is decked out with different figurines and totem poles. If you couldn't smell the scent of food, you might mistake this place to be a Latin American flea market. You order your food cafeteria style: stand in line, point to what you want, and then pay when you reach the end. Like other people stated, there is a huge language barrier. Most of the people behind the line only spoke Spanish, but this didn't stop me from ordering tons of food: carne asada, rice and beans, fried cheese, and plantains. They stuffed my platter until there was no more room left. There was so much food that it could almost feed 2-3 people comfortably. The best part was that everything was for only $8.00!! I would assume for the price and quantity, it must lack on flavor. But the taste of the food did not disappoint.
