I found XTUN through a cruise ship excursion. There are positive reviews on Google and I wanted to add my praise here on Yelp as well. I would highly recommend this excursion and venue!
Our group of 31 was split into three smaller groups, which made the experience feel intimate and well-paced. Our guide, Alejandria, was fantastic - knowledgeable, funny, and engaging. She pointed out wildlife and shared interesting ecological and historical context throughout the tour. The other guides also seemed equally great.
The water is chilly (around 70°F), but wetsuits are available for $10. I skipped the wetsuit and was definitely cold at first but eventually adjusted, while others found the temperature refreshing. The tour includes a mix of walking, wading, and swimming, and life jackets are required throughout.
Life jackets, water shoes, water, sandwiches, and a granola bar were provided. The food likely came from the cruise line rather than the venue, but it's still a helpful FYI for anyone booking through a cruise excursion.
The only minor downsides were the mosquitoes (bug repellent is provided, I just didn't notice it until the end!) and the rustic bathrooms and changing areas with somewhat see-through wood slat doors, though neither was a big issue.
This was my first caving experience, and it exceeded my expectations. I learned so much about the incredible cenote systems and feel lucky to have experienced them in such a unique way. Although I was skeptical of the excursion format, I'm ultimately glad we went that route as I doubt we would have found this place on our own.
Not sure how booking works if you want to visit without an excursion, but I think tickets are $30 USD, and highly worth it if so! read more
