How do I know that Mardi Gras was a success? I followed the celebration on WWOZ, New Orleans' "Guardian of the Groove." Throughout the 2025 Carnival season, as I have in past years, I listened to live performances and music played from WWOZ's vast archive, and viewed video and photos from the city's parades and other celebrations. And I'm able to enjoy the New Orleans vibe year round, because, since 1980, WWOZ has hosted and presented the city's music, from classic to current, and the station streams its daily programming on its website, providing the world a handy connection to the place. And wwoz.org hosts a two-week archive of shows, calendars of musical and other community events, and its Flickr archive of photos from Jazz Fest, the Satchmo SummerFest, and more. How valuable is WWOZ? In their book, "Up From the Cradle of Jazz: New Orleans Music Since World War II", authors Jason Berry, Jonathan Foose and Tad Jones refer to the station as "...a kaleidoscope of voices, rich in oral imagery -- jazzmen, composers, Cajun fiddlers, parades, grand marshals, gospel artists and R&B bluesmen, writers, occasional filmmakers, historians, Mardi Gras Indians, fathers and sons and mothers and daughters of musical families." WWOZ, they say, provides "...intimacy between the musicians and listeners, immeasurably broadening the sense of place." If you miss New Orleans, or you've never been, and wonder what you're missing about the place, tune in WWOZ. And don't forget to make a donation; listener support keeps the bon temps rolling!

If you like being read to, then this is the station for you. 24 hours of programming a day. They read everything from local news sources (the Lens, NOLA.com, the Advocate), National news sources (Wall Street Journal, headlines/breaking news). You can keep up with their featured books via their website (usually one fiction & one nonfiction) and their Midday short story is a great accompaniment to your lunch. Basically they try to have something for everyone. Most of their readers are volunteers and some are better than others, but mostly the bobbles are endearing rather than annoying. Give this station a listen now!

I am a busy man, I have a dog to play fetch with, and these gin drinks won't just mix themselves. Modern New Orleans isn't an easy place to live in...do I read the comics (fun) or mop the floor (less so)? Well there's a chance Ill bring a hot babe home (I suppose) so the floor has gotta be mopped, but damn, who knows what kinda thing Beatle Bailey may get into today. Maybe him and Sarge will actually come out together this week? I gotta check the comics...but I gotta impress an imaginary girl also, just in case she turns out to exist. This is where WRBH comes in. 6:30 PM every Sunday, sure as the sun rises, the comics get read; for the sightless, for the illiterate, those unable to hold or afford newspapers, and me. That's a pretty healthy slice of the city for which Haggars horribleness is described with details I sometimes miss myself; Snuffy Smiths bottle of moonshine described so clearly, I can see the 3 x's on the label. I can mop away, with no fear of missing out on the other joys of my life, whatever is in the daily paper. They don't just read the comics...every morning, for 2 hours, the Times Picayune. Then Weekly Magazines, Books (fiction/non and local), and when you are lucky, the incredibly awesome Constance McEnany. From England to Gretna and reading the hits in her unmistakable British accent at 82, the Uncle Lionel of the reading radio scene, really. If I was sitting in a bar she ordered a gimlet next to me, I would freak, I would recognize her voice anywhere. My friends neighbor named a chicken after her...she's that awesome. Wanna know the price of Ham? That'll be Friday at noon when they read the grocery ads. The always odd reading of the death notices makes you just sit and ponder those others listening; are they hoping to hear a name? Not hear a name? What the heck would I do if I was listening at 6:53 PM and theymentioned someone I knew and liked passed and just jumped to the next name? With the loss of the Times Picayune, some of the best shows will be gone...but they really do have lots of awesome programs, local authors, chef interviews, replays of old time radio, even a Vietnamese show (which I always listen too, since I can't read Vietnamese at all). 200 volunteers, 24 hours a day. A great community resource, I am a proud donator.

Your reply was, you are much happier now than then. I don't care about your happiness. I was referring to our country's financial status. If you have no financial difficulties I can understand you not understanding what was said. I also stated that I was putting my judgement on the fact that he is a great businessman. Your reply to that was that anyone can succeed with casinos. I suggest that you stop using that as a defence. You live in New Orleans and you should know about the struggles with Harrahs Casino. Also, the fact that he ran a show that decided "Fired or Not" I don't think he would have been chosen for that if he weren't good in business. The main reason I'm texting is the fact that in 5 minutes time you referred to me as "people like you" My name is Mary, you knew that and yet every time you referenced me it was always "people like you" I have heard about "people like you" who disregard other people giving them NO RESPECT because our beliefs differ. Our beliefs differ and that's ok. The fact you prejudiced me because of it and grouped me into a category is not ok. The fact that you did it on air, is not ok. You showed GREAT DISRESPECT for me because I disagreed with you. It is soooo sad that this is the state of our country. "If you disagree with someone they deserve 0 respect. It also goes along with the fact that you said what you said and then you disconnected. WOW I have listened to you since I was in high school. You need to know this is one person who will not be listening to you any longer, despite the fact that I disagree with you. Please don't take this as a disagreement of political views. It is what it is. "A lack of respect because of differences in opinions.

You can login via your phone from the app. You don't have to be afraid of your children hearing any inappropriate music or conversations if you stay tuned to this station. It is definitely inspirational and the DJs and MCs are extremely joyful and encouraging. My only thing is that LifeSongs doesn't play any urban music. I feel this is necessary to connect with the city's population beyond current believer's. My son sleeps with Lifesongs playing in the background because the music is positive and peaceful. If you are ever having a bad day, week or month, challenge yourself to trying out this radio station for one whole day, week, or month. I gave up all the old radio stations after trying desperately to dodge inappropriate song after song from my kids' ears. I found positive music artists and learned about spirit-filled family events through LifeSongs. The real life testimonies will move you. The hosts will entertain you and tickle you with joy. God will speak to you through at least one or all of the songs and words of encouragement that you hear on any given day. LifeSongs pours only good into your mind and spirit, even the news and prayer requests are positive, powerful, and inspirational. Give positive fun a try - turn your station to 89.9. One day we'll have an urban and pop version of LifeSongs, but today we have a worship and alternative Christian ministry through music that is right at your fingertips. God is always communicating to us, we just have to turn our internal radios to the right station to hear Him. Let LifeSongs help you learn to hear from Him and block out the negative messages you hear on every other station and frequency. :-) (Also don't forget to check out the LifeSongs Car Wash, SnoBall stand, and brand spanking new (GORGEOUS) Cafe where you can have the most peaceful environment and great service all for wonderful causes! I'll post reviews of those separately.) Take care!
