Worth Abbey is a Roman Catholic religious community of Benedictine monks. As well as supporting the adjacent few-paying school, the Abbey runs retreats for Christians of all denominations.
Founded in 1933 as a daughter of Downside Abbey, it became fully independent in 1957. At the same time, the independent Worth school - until then a preparatory school linked to Downside School in Somerset - became a fully autonomous school and admitted older boys.
The Abbey has a number of facilities available for retreats and conferences, including fully catered accommodation (though not all rooms are en-suite).
The Abbey has its own retreat programme over the year, under the banner of "The Open Cloister", which ties into the rhythm of life of the monastic day. But churches can run their own retreats including one-day bookings.
The site has ample car parking, lovely gardens and fabulous views across the Sussex Weald. The buildings were designed and built in the 1960s and 1970s and have a college feel to them. Most spectacular is the Chapel, which seats 900 in the round, under a huge concrete dome.
The Abbey is situated just off the M23 (Junction 10a). The nearest railway station is Three Bridges. read more
