The trail isn't too hard; I did the east loop going clockwise since the volunteers told me there was probably a little better foliage along this loop than the west loop. I was able to do the whole thing and return to where I started in a little under 2 hours. It was a relatively warm day; I was grateful i bought my personal fan when going up the steep part because I was definitely starting to sweat! After that though it was mostly flat and then back downhill so no issues with getting hot. I got several lovely photos along the way and was certainly reminded how gorgeous and colorful Texas can be! Only note: be sure to make a timed entry reservation if you go during the peak season (fall) because it absolutely sells out! I tried going with a friend last year and we didn't have a res and we were turned away - we ended up going to Garner state park which is also gorgeous and fun, about 30 mins drive away from lost maples. This year we got entry for the 11a-1p entry time, and by the week or so prior to going, everything was sold out for that Saturday we were going. So bear that in mind!

We got to Rocksprings around 4pm and hang out at a very cute coffeehouse until they closed at 5. I am very glad we did wait and checkout this unique place. Andrew and Dennis were our guides. They were very knowledgeable and friendly. They have been volunteers for over 20 years and went above and beyond to make our experience special. It warms my heart their dedication to this special place. There was only one more person in our group. We drove our cars after watching a video at the visitor center. You must schedule a reservation prior to going to the natural area that is closed to the public. You meet at the visitor center in Rocksprings before driving about 15 minutes outside of town to the actual site. Your guide talks about the cavern and the bats and you watch a video before heading to watch the bats come out. The evening bat tours are offered May 1- Oct. 31 as the bats migrate to Mexico for the colder months. The cavern is 320ft in diameter and gets to a depth of 350ft. It is one of the largest bat colonies in Texas.

When we got closer to the natural area, we had to take a dusty dirt road off of the main highway. It was very remote with a few houses along the path. Cell reception was non-existent so make sure you download Google maps prior to coming out here. At the "state park", the headquarters was pristine, modern, sleek, and brand new. They finished building it/January 2025. The first week of May, they didn't have any park gear such as magnets, car decals, stickers, but only had the option to stamp "State Park passport book". Also, if you want to check in from this location on Yelp, it won't let you since you're outside of Del Rio. Now at the river, there is a small restroom without air conditioning. The toilets look like ones from a camper or airplane. It was hard to tell if it was clean or not. The restroom smelt like an unclean musty outside world. There's plenty of parking alongside the river. When you get to the river, there's no benches or anywhere to store your belongings. The main part of the river is rocky and the water is icy cold. So cold, but it feels so refreshing in the summer heat. The water is translucent and there's fishes swimming in it too. The fishes will slightly nip at you, but they don't bite. I was a bit fearful of flesh eating amoeba tapping into my brain causing me to be brain dead, but thankfully that didn't happen to me. The water was so clear that I was able open my eyes inside. My brother and I stayed for two hours and had the whole river to ourselves. It was not the slightest crowded. The area is so beautiful. I love West Texas natural beauty. This natural area is the most underrated of the Texas state parks.

But I remember going to camp when I was a kid and we got spoiled milk. Like stringy and sour smelling as you poured it. And it was one dish for the entire table. Here it's buffet style. As much as you want. They accommodated for vegetarians. Like on hamburger day they had huge portobello mushrooms to make a shroom burger. Ice cream cups and bombsicles and my favorite Orange dreamsicles in their self serve fridge. Twice a week in the summer they had BBQ down by the river. I think some of the activities you gotta reserve in advance. Like way in advance. For example archery - 1 month in advance. They got zip line and ropes course too that probably require reservations. They're very modest courses. Like zip line is just one line. I think there's a critter museum with some of the local wildlife there (bugs etc). No reservation required for the canoes however. And there are some nice small rapids with natural water slides for young kids to enjoy as well as a free man made slide that looks kinda intense. If you put your feet in the river minnows will come up and nibble on them. Like a fish spa. And of course they have an iconic rope on the tree like all good camps have. Swimming pool is there for those who don't like the Guadalupe river (but river is super clean and you can see to the bottom). Accommodations were surprisingly decent. Clean. No bugs. Shampoo, bar soap and towels provided at least at the Flato lodge which were apartment style with nice little shares balcony with room next door. They have a small cafe on site with soda fountain ($20 tumbler gets you unlimited refills for the year). Little hiking trails. Several resident indoor chill cats who hang out at the various building like Mabee Building, their museum (ask for the key), etc. Mostly multiple church groups booking here at the same time but different facilities. The place is large. Despite being church groups some of the high school campers were dropping the F bomb left and right in the cafeteria. Actually heard some of the staff doing the same. Staff was all polite and are young international folks from various countries like Hungary, Spain, Australia, UK, Mexico and other places. Was a nice getaway and just what the doctor ordered.

I want to start by responding to the review left by "S S" in 2021. Braun House at Mo Ranch was…read moreformerly staff housing, now converted to rental space. The advertising for it that I found online shows pics of all bedrooms and shows the beds, so I don't understand SS complaining about that. The high cost reflects the fact that you are renting the entire house (3 BR, two bath, laundry room, etc., sleeps 10. See https://www.moranch.org/stay-at-mo-ranch/group-lodging-at-mo-ranch/braun-house-mo-ranch/. )There are less expensive options at Mo. It's a valid complaint that the toilet and fridge weren't clean and that there were droppings. The charge of "unresponsive staff" is vague - does that mean she got nowhere with expressing her concerns to the front office? That hasn't been my experience. As far as being unaware that it's a "religious" site, it's a Presbyterian camp & conference center and there is absolutely no pushing of religion on any guest, ever. But I acknowledge that Air B&B or whoever posts it should note that it's part of a conference center property. Okay, here's my take. My family has stayed at Mo Ranch probably 15 times, for several days each time, on both church retreats and family reunions. There have been occasional glitches, which were resolved to our satisfaction. It is a wonderful place for families, with lots for kid to do. The Wynne/Flato lodge accommodations are as nice or nicer than many commercial hotels I've stayed at. We've stayed in both Pheasant Run and Wynne/Flato, which includes cafeteria-style meals, and barbecue by the river on Fridays in the summer; as well as the Guest Lodge by the river, where we had a kitchen and could prepare our own meals. It's a beautiful location with a great history. I'm sorry that "SS" didn't have the same good experience as most every other poster here did. Oh, and P.S.: we've been using the water slide since YEARS before they added the side rails! It is definitely safe.

These stables are right up the road from my parents house, and we have always driven past them as we go into Concan/Leaky. We finally decided to book a ride with Elm Creek Stables and are happy that we did! They made sign-in very easy, the ride started on time, the horses were well behaved and nicely groomed, and our guides were very sweet. The gentleman leading the ride stopped along the way to pickup old horseshoes and let my little kiddos keep them as souvenirs. They were so excited. The ride itself gives very beautiful views of the valley, and they have added cute faces to trees and signs along the trail to give it that "touristy trail ride" feel. After the ride ended, the kiddos got popsicles and we walked around and took a look at the other animals. They had a newborn miniature pony, a pig, a blind axis deer, bunnies, and many many horses. We will definitely be back again in the future.

My boyfriend and I were able to come a little early, so the guides could take us on a more advanced ride at a higher elevation. Morgan and Allison were great guides considering how young they are (14 and 15). They easily navigated a beautiful path that they hadn't gone on in about a month. The views were gorgeous, and much of the trail was shaded. The horses were calm, but definitely have their own distinct personality. The ride was about 90 minutes long, and very affordable for the 2 of us. Overall, we were pretty lucky we got to go on such a beautiful ride with just the 4 of us--a very memorable experience. I look forward to visiting Elm Creek again on our next family vacation to the Frio.
