It's easy for me to imagine what my life would be like without Workantile, Ann Arbor's co-working space. I worked for years in Chicago at home or out of coffee shops. I dealt with all of the problems that home workers encounter. It was hard to work at home because of all of the distractions and chores waiting around the corner. It was just as hard at the coffee shop, lugging my laptop into the bathroom so people wouldn't steal my stuff, trying to have an important business call while the barista is whipping up a tasty, but incredibly loud, espresso, and competing with other customers for that valuable table space. When I moved to A2, I knew I wanted something different, and thankfully I happened upon Workantile. This is the perfect place for home workers (like me), freelancers, writers, and other independent workers. It gives me a place to get away from the distractions of home. It gives me quiet rooms to make phone calls and have meetings. And, although this wasn't a reason I joined, one of the most important benefits became evident after a few weeks at Workantile. The community here is awesome. Workantile is full of bright, funny, and interesting people, who are always willing to strike up a conversation or lend a hand if you need some advice on a particular subject. We have social lunches every Thursday, which is a great way to take a break and meet new people. So, you see, the social aspect of Workantile that wasn't even on my radar when I walked in the door quickly became the #1 reason it is so invaluable to me. One last reason why Workantile is awesome. It's affordable. I couldn't join co-working spaces in Chicago that *started* at $300/month, but I can afford Workantile. Look around at rates for other co-working sites across the nation, and you'll find Workantile is very reasonable. I'm glad Workantile is here in A2. I work here a couple times a week. I was drifting into depression working everyday from the second bedroom of my apartment; I can legitimately say that Workantile changed my life. Ann Arbor-area freelancers, grad students, and remote workers should seriously consider a trial membership. Workantile has been an amazing place for me as a PhD student. Working from home or coffee shops was an emotional rollercoaster that normally ended in being lonely and procrastinating heavily. I missed the community feel that an office often provides. After much coaxing from those around me, I decided to join Workantile. I could not be happier. Workantile very quickly provided me with the community I needed. Every time I walked in to Workantile I was met with faces I knew. After a quick greeting around the space, I was able to quickly get to work and focus on my studies without worrying about chores or being lonely. When I needed a break from work, I can get up from my space and take a walk outside without one thought about the safety of my purse or my laptop. If I needed help editing a quick email, finding the right word in a sentence or thinking through how to approach a problem I just put down my headphones and turn to ask the people in the room or use Slack to ask people online. Many times someone will know more about a particular problem more than I do. I have also presented an upcoming conference paper to friends from Workantile who are happy to help me go through the presentation as they take a break from their own work. For me the best thing about co-working is the community it has given me. Whether it's the weekly social lunch function, happy hour after work or dinner with a co-working friend, it always brightens my day. Since I never lived in Michigan before starting my PhD program, I did not know anyone here. Now most of the people I spend time with I know through co-working at Workantile. There have been many times when the PhD has been particularly grueling for me, like through preliminary exams, and Workantile helped me through. Now that I'm moving away from Ann Arbor I can only dream to find a place as wonderful as Workantile. read more

If you work remotely and have had one too many conversations with your pet, go to Workantile! Immediately. It's a clean, bright space filled with disciplined hard workers who genuinely enjoy their work. Members are friendly and inclusive and provide excellent company for grabbing a beer after work or a salad for lunch. I highly recommend at least checking them out for a tour and a free day! read more
