Jaya has yoga classes every day, even holidays, from morning through evening. There's also Pilates,…read moresound baths, occasional community acupuncture, dance parties and reiki sanghas. Most classes are mixed level, and there are special courses for kids, beginners, etc. That said, from what I've experienced, all ages, abilities, genders, bodies etc are actively welcomed in mixed classes. Each teacher has a somewhat different approach, so it's worth taking classes with a few to see what works best for you. They have a generous intro back so that you can do exactly that, and then a range of options from single classes to multipacks to memberships. Bring your own gear, or use their mats, blankets, blocks, bolsters, etc. This is a caring community where you can go at your own pace and made modifications as necessary; no one is going to bully you into injury. On the other hand, if you're open to guidance, it's clear that the instructors really care about helping students continually improve strength, balance, flexibility, alignment, etc. Some classes include spiritual elements of chanting and hand mudras. If you're looking for any combination of exercise, spiritually, friendship and/or community, I cannot more highly recommend Jaya. I've been coming here very regularly for over five years and I still learn new things in every class. So you're not going to believe this, but just hold on a minute and hear me out. I know I've said it…read morehundreds of times before, but this time I'm really serious about leading a healthier and more enlightened lifestyle. So it was about a year ago when I decided that I was going to fall in love with yoga. I headed on over to Jaya and took my first "real" class. I had taken classes before at NYSC, but had never been to an actual yoga studio. My initial experience was with their 1 week unlimited newbie class pass. After my first basic/intermediate class, I realized that I am not even close to being a basic yogi and I am also much weaker than I thought. I only made it to 1 more class that week....and it was restorative yoga, which basically means lying down and breathing, aka my 2nd favorite thing to do after eating. After that 1st week, when I could sit on the toilet without wincing again, I decided to go all out and buy a class card for 20 classes in 24 weeks for $280. Let's do this! I'm on fire!!! Now 5 months later, I have 15 classes left to use up....apparently I was not on fire. But alas, I'm writing this review now as a reminder to myself to keep on keeping on. If I've learned anything so far, it's that Yoga is all about accepting your thoughts, positive or negative, allowing them in, loving them because they are a part of you and then letting them free (to haunt other people). I've also learned to be gentle and to trust the process because nothing important is ever easy. Based on the little knowledge that I have of yoga studios, this place seems to be doing a fine job. The staff is kind and knowledgeable and the clients look like they're pretty happy to be a part of the experience. I've only had the pleasure of meeting a few of the instructors, and so far, Susan Kraft has been the one that stands out. Even though I am often sweating and struggling though her classes, her calm demeanor paired with her motivation and gentle corrections, make me feel like she's really paying attention to every person's needs. This definitely makes the poses a little less of a struggle. In conclusion, I think you'll be proud to hear that I just signed up for 2 back to back classes for tonight....so if you're planning on joining me, just try to ignore the whimpers coming from my side of the room. It's going to be ok.
