I was privileged to be invited to attend a Saint Patrick's day party at The Barn located in the Winthrop Mall in Riverview, FL.Once inside the invitation only festival, the surprises kept coming. Irish Cream coffee was a good start as I made my way to the appetizer table where pizzas, wings and pulled pork were a delicious way to start the festivities. As I headed to my table with a plate that looked more like a meal than an appetizer I passed a large room of tables laden with more desserts than I have seen in a long time. I was trying to figure out how I could eat the appetizers and still have room for the key lime pie and other treats when I passed tables that stretched almost the full length of the enormous hall. It would be difficult to list the selection of food that was prepared or the large table of large shrimp that was replenished all evening as were items on the serving line. My chances of visiting the main food line and the dessert room seemed pretty slim. Irish dancers and even a bagpipe made it a night to remember in a spectacular venue. A tip of the Brandon Hat to John and Kay Sullivan who hosted this memorable occasion. They were gracious insuring that all details were perfect for everyone in attendance. What a great venue for a special occasion. All left content as I did and I did get the Key Lime pie. read more

We have been to many weddings/ events here and our main complaint has always been the air. I am not sure what needs to be done to keep it cool when you have anywhere from 50- 100+ guests it's just HOT!!! A/C reads 80 and feels every bit of it. I suggest investing in some type of portable units to support the main system that can't keep up or add more insulation or update your A/C unit. Thank you! Do your self a favor and stay away from this venue. My cousin had her sweet 16 here this Saturday and let me tell you, Throughout the party, their bartender Frank was bribing us the young adults to give him more money in the tip jar in order for more alcohol to be poured into our glasses. By the end of the night, our glasses were filled to the brim with alcohol. Due to the high volume of activity, my phone was left at this venue. The next day, I went to the venue. Once I got there, I saw Frank cleaning, and I asked him did he see a phone. His response was " I have not seen a phone but do you want some alcohol? no one can say anything us now." Baffled by his response to the matter, I simply said: "no, thank you." Come to Monday, my aunt called Jamie (the manager) and told her " Jaime, my niece lost her phone at the venue. Have you seen it?" Jaime's response to this was " Frank told me about the situation... however, let's keep in mind, this is the girl that had to be cut off". I want to state that my aunt and Jaime have had differences throughout the entire preparation of the party... Jaime gave my aunt a very hard time with any changes that she had. Due to this harsh response, I took it upon my self to personally go speak to Jaime, and try to retrieve my phone. Once I got there, Jaime and her assistant Denise were VERY unprofessional saying things such as " Well your family was very happy when the open bar started. " along with sighing and making noises because I lost my phone. It wasn't until 20 minutes later when she decided to finally tell us that they had surveillance cameras that could clear up many of my doubts. As I asked her to see the surveillance footage she would make excuses as to why she couldn't show me saying " Well I can't assure you a clear picture etc." finally she says "I need to show you the footage in an hour bc I have an appointment." As uncomfortable as I felt leaving the venue without seeing the footage, I advised her that I was on my way to the police station to make a report with all the names of the people at the Venue. Two minutes after I left, she sent this image to aunt saying she found the phone (image below). Clearly, the items were placed neatly. So her response is "okay we found the phone, no need to see the surveillance footage." Thankfully, I got my property back from these shady people and unfortunately, I did not get to see the footage of what actually happened that night. However, Edgard (owner), I would reevaluate the staff you have. Clearly, they are not as trusting as Jaime proclaims, since this venue was almost $7,000. read more

Great venue! This was the site of our 2013 all-in Yelp event, and it was a good one, thanks to the staff here. The crew worked tirelessly to provide the 200+ hungry and thirsty Yelpers with a memorable evening of delight. The venue was vast and spacious enough for all who attended to move about freely with very little awkward run ins. The outdoor area is charming as hell with it's brick-paved walkway which leads to a large seating area with tables and chairs. The lights above the walkway are night and romantic touch as well. My friends rented this place for their wedding and reception. I never noticed the barn before I learned about the event. What a great place and awesome location for people south of Brandon. They stood us up!! Had a 5:30pm "appointment" and they didn't show. Also had a drive up customer. We were both looking for possible wedding venue and am thoroughly disappointed. There was a drama class going on so we did see inside. But, too dark to tell if it would work. Would have been nice to be walked trough what could have been done!! We decided not to use their caterers because they were extremely expensive. So they started adding extra fees to make up for that cost. They took days to respond!!! Traveling to Europe really doesn't lend itself to the graduate students budget... luckily Chef Gary Moran and his wife, Amy, are willing to foot the bill and send us all to the French countryside from their new venue in Riverview, the Winthrop Barn. The refurbished barn takes on a whole new aura under their thoughtful direction, with French accents throughout, and romantic sheer linens strewn about the spacious indoor gathering area. Paper lanterns adorn the ceiling, adding a modern Asian feel and brightness to the dark walls. Generous natural light streams in from the large windows throughout, only to be replaced by the tranquility of the soft glow of strings of lights that form a starlit ceiling throughout the event space and outdoor patio at night. The building structure, as well as details like the hoof imprints lining the patio where the barn's cattle used to feed, pays tribute to the history of this beautifully transformed space. I was honored to receive an invitation from Amy to attend one of the venues inaugural food events, the French Country Dinner, and take part in the celebration of rustic, French food. Chef Moran is as much a chef as he is a historian, garnishing each course with thoughtful anecdotes of his childhood, experiences abroad, and techniques that were used to create these beautiful, delectable dishes. These intimate experiences that bring the Chef and the foodie together are the reason I am so drawn to the food community and food writing. The passion Chef Moran feels for his cuisine is palpable, sprinkled throughout every bite of the artfully prepared French dishes he presented us with on Wednesday night. The meal started with wine, of course, and a wonderfully complex salad. A base of bitter frisee greens, speckled generously with bacon lardon and croutons fried in bacon fat, tossed in a mustard tarragon dressing, and topped with a poached egg. It really doesn't get better than this salad for me. Bitter, salty, crunchy, rich, tangy, and creamy all found their way into this course, and I couldn't think of another way I would want to eat a salad. I'd like to send a special thank you to Chef Moran's grandmother, whose perpetual use of bacon grease as the base for frying helped bring these beautiful croutons into my gustatory world. Perfection. The second course, Ciallette De Nice, hit another ceiling-high note for me, with beautifully matched flavors, all working together as part of Chef Moran's tribute to traditional peasant cuisine. Two pork sausages made with creamy duck liver and rice, resting atop a bed of grits with wilted spinach, tomato bagna cauda, and feta cheese, because who doesn't love feta cheese? Yes, that's what I thought. It took me no more than 5 minutes to finish this healthy portion of pork and grits. I just couldn't stop. It was so delicious. The main course was the ultimate labor of love: a red wine braised duck leg with wonderfully flavorful lentils and brussel sprouts, caramelized apples, and a time, and wine, intensive L'Orange sauce. The potent sauce takes six bottles of wine to create! Add the intense orange flavor from further reduction with orange juice, and you get a pungent, sticky sauce that begs to be licked off the plate. Don't worry; I restrained myself (unfortunately). The meal was punctuated with Pickled Peach Clafoutis with an amazing basil chantilly. Likened to a flan, this light dessert provided the perfect, fresh end to an outstanding meal. And the basil chantilly deserves a standing ovation on its own. The light whipped cream, a staple in many of the Chef's dishes, showcases the flavor of the basil beautifully. I can't thank Amy and Chef enough. This dinner was truly a unique and exceptional experience, but one of the many to come at this new venue. The beautiful surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for the intimate interaction between with food enthusiast and a culinary mastermind. Chef Moran's passion truly comes through in his food and his retellings of personal experiences add a layer of warmth to each dish. If you simply can't wait until the next event to try Chef Moran's food, visit their restaurant, Wimuama in South Tampa. The space is beautiful but the people that run the place "Edgar" is so unprofessional & unorganized! I made 2 appointments with him & both times he was late!! When I would call him to ask where he was his response was "honey, i'll better in 10minutes" both times its was longer than 10minutes. He had an in house event coordinator who was supposed to have a table set up for us to see & she was also late both times & had nothing to show us! my wedding is planned for a year in advance & these people probably wont be around that long because of how they treat people. read more

Horrible experience with new management Jaime Read. Regret doing business with her. She never answered my calls, never responded to messages. I was stuck not being able to cancel my contract. she charged me 10% for any "outside vendors" , I had to pay for security who never showed up. Jaime stated she had security parked in the back of facility "undercover" when i asked for my refund. I could have seen it coming from the start..but too late to back out. Nice concept. Space was vast, restrooms clean. Restrooms weren't very large though, given that the place holds a lot of people. Only 3 stalls in the ladies room. If having a lot of people for an event, that's probably not enough bathroom area. Would have been 4 stars but my biggest complaint was that the place was hot. They didn't seem to bother turning on the AC a couple hours before our event - seemed like they turned it on as we first got there. We asked that they crank on the AC, which they did, but after adding 70+ bodies to the room, it never cooled down. They also put our catered food in the corner, instead of lining up tables so people could serve themselves from both sides. That was a poor decision, one that more experienced event people should have known. Tables in the corner is a little prettier, but made getting our food VERY time consuming. Overall fine, but could use a few tweaks. read more

This venue was the perfect place for my wedding reception dinner and party!!! Jaime, the current manager, was very helpful and always willing to meet my mom and I and let us into the venue to look, think, and plan for my wedding reception! I am so happy we had our wedding reception in this place! we had about 170 guests seated for a buffet styled dinner and had room for a dance floor. I absolutely love the walkway with the cafe lights draped along it, and the inside of the barn was just beautiful!!!! We had used a lady name Carol Valdarrama from "Eventuall" and she was our wedding decorator/coordinator and florist. She really helped transform this already pretty venue into a BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL place for our wedding reception this past June!! Also, the restrooms are nice. The only downside is there isn't a kitchen there, so we couldn't heat up food there, but the caterer's we hired made sure the food was warm for our guests! :) But overall, we really couldn't be happier. It was a GREAT price! And I would recommend this place to anyone for a small or large party. read more

The venue is very nice, but I wasn't pleased with the management. We had booked the venue, and when we went to sign our contract, we were told the venue wouldn't be available until 4:00. We had intended in renting the venue for the whole day, because our daughter's wedding was at 5:00. They had booked a re-occuring booking. This allowed us no time to decorate. We were given an extra hour, so that we could have someone decorate for us. The management was very rude to our friends that were there to decorate for us and were showing the venue to someone else while our friends were decorating. I felt this was very unprofessional on their part. We were to have some tablecloths on a couple of tables that weren't covered. Management said we didn't pay for them, and charged our friends for the tablecloths. Also, be aware of the contract. If you don't use their vendors, you will be charged an additional fee of 10% of the cost of the vendors you are using on top of the venue fee. They will nickle and dime you on their services if you don't use their vendors. Charges for folding napkins etc. I would not recommend the Barn. read more
