The Lake Wales Public Library has been serving the community of Lake Wales since 1919. Like many…read moresmall communities in Florida of this time, the library started out as a Woman's Club civic project. The women accepted books and magazines and set up the first library on a shelf in their clubhouse. After the library outgrew the club it was moved to the Dixie Walesbilt Hotel in downtown Lake Wales and then to a room in the Lake Wales City Hall. In 1957 the Lake Wales Library Association/Friends of the Library was formed to raise money to build a library building. In 1960 the town library opened on Cypress Garden Lane, on the shores of Crystal Lake in 1960. The library was further expanded expanded in 1991. Today the library collection includes over 80,000 books, audiovisuals, kits, archives, periodicals, maps, clippings, and software. I really like small town libraries like this one that are the heartbeat of their community. It lends materials but the Lake Wales Public Library is also gathering place. In the lobby of the library is a beautiful mural of lake Wales most famous attraction, Bok Tower. In front of it is a detailed model of the tower encased in glass. Also in this part of the library is Ye Olde Bookshop selling a large selection of secondhand books. On the wall of the library there are paintings by local artists and archival photographs. Some of the programs the library is hosting this month include celebrating Native American History Month, chair yoga, needlework arts, and a teen creative writing club. This library is so charming and a has a beautiful view of lake Crystal from the windows. It is a great resource for education and culture in Lake Wales.

The staff provides guest access with complimentary patron card numbers available at the front desk. I have been able to work on my resume and send it out for 3 for 4 hours. Printing is 25 cents per page. The security guard is also very helpful. But if you come to the library with your toddlers, please try and keep them under control and close to you. I have seen kids get out of hand and the parents disregard the security guard and it not a pleasant encounter. Other than that there are numerous activities for kids to do during the week. They have baby and Me for younger infants and another group for older kids. They also do all types of events throughout the year you can find on their Facebook or calender. They even do events for adults and offer educational classes all for free. The library staff is always friendly. Jonathan the youth specialist who leads the baby and me class is remarkable. He has a true talent for connecting with the kids. My son adores him and actually gets engaged in story time. I appreciate how Jonathan remembers my sons name and greets him each time. This library has a very inviting children's room with blocks and in the back they have animal shaped chairs. They allow you to check out so many books and make reading exciting. It's a wonderful opportunity to connect with other parents and let your children have fun! Its never too soon to start their education and joy for learning.

It's free, and has the MOST patient, helpful Masterspace Technicians (Jon and Grace) you could ever hope for! Communication when inquiring, booking time, and reminders of your upcoming date, was excellent. I had the pleasure of working with Jon on two occasions. Technology hates me, but Jon didn't let it stop me! He explained all the equipment, and when it was time to record (with an outside director thru Zoom), Jon got us connected! He also came back a number of times (while also assisting other guests) to help with operator errors (mine). He was so patient and kind, and I actually learned a lot! Will definitely use the Lab again, and this time, with more experience! Thank you so much, Jon, for making my maiden voyage there such a great experience!
