It's one of the most picturesque places in the Quarter and really worth a visit if you've never popped in before. The church is overseen by the lovely and eccentric Vicar Mary (who's love of Craft and Film is something to behold). It really is a lovely place to have a wander around, even if you're not in the least bit religious. Honestly, I can vouch that I have been in several times and have never even been singed (it was a relief not to burst into flames). As one of the more hospitable green spaces in the Centre of Birmingham, over summer it's a haven for picknickers, lunch-timers and readers. Over the winter, it's a magnet for sledgers and intrepid snowman makers. As well as Churchy-things, the building has been used for a multitude of cool events. Did you know Elbow hosted a super secret gig in the catacombs a couple of years ago? I have been to Jameson's events, Film screenings and live music based events here. It's well worth keeping an eye on the noticeboards as you pop by, you never know what the Vicar has up her sleeves!

St Paul's has taken a surprising and progressive approach to business by expanding their reach to include operating as a music venue - presumably to carefully handpicked acts only. I've been fortunate enough to see Laura Marling and Lisa Hannigan play gigs here, and both of them suited the venue perfectly. The vaulted ceilings carry their voices clearly across pews and pews of fans, and the acoustics meant the instruments all sounded crystal clear. I'm sure more performers will start seeing churches as an alternative venue to perform in (particularly if they're acoustic and/or folk) though I really can't see any loud heavy metal being performed here!

I heard the music, followed it and have been with them ever since. It is a vibrant, musical, apostolic church. Anna Zengeya, the Senior Pastors wife, is also an internationally known singer. The church moved from Carrs Lane Church Centre to St Lukes. I tend to go to the Musical Sunday every month. To date I've taken friends and family, members of the Choir With No Name, homeless people, dancer from GAP and anybody I meet on the way there. The congregation is mostly Zimbabwean. There is a warm friendly atmosphere in the church. Visitors are made welcome. The church is always beautifully decorated. Invitations to events, birthdays, homemaking, wedding is extended to all who attend the service. We've attended many of these over the years and everyone who attend comment on the hospitality. Generally it's said that churches are losing congregations but that's not true of African and Caribbean Churches. Over the years people have left to open another branch of the church and meet up at Conventions, meeting and special occasions like the Pastors' daughters' wedding last week. Do visit. When I first came to Birmingham, I didn't know who St Martin was or that this was a church, all I…read moreknew was there was certainly a magnificent church facing me as I drank my coffee at Starbucks, across the way with glass windows with great views of this church, as a building it is spectacular and really livens up Birmingham and makes the "City core" nicer as a whole, and it is amazing to see just a thing within meters of The Bullring, Birmingham's rather large shopping center. I class myself as Roman Catholic, yet I wouldn't class myself as extremely religious but still this Church is a really nice place to spend some time around while in Birmingham, with it being a nice, old building to the point where it actually is a Grade II listed building and has 16 bells. The current church has been there since 1873, since the old one was demolished, however 143 years on, it is ironic to be still calling this the "New" church, but still history goes back into the 1500's, where it still stood with 4 bells in 1552. They isn't much to say other than this is a really nice building and makes Birmingham city center as a whole, due to this great church and piece of history being on the door-step of Birmingham city center, which helps make Birmingham stand out, and to me is one of the things that makes Birmingham what it is today, an answer to London's Buckingham Palace perhaps? UPDATE: When I visited Birmingham, I run out of superlatives to describe this church but still I can't help but feel I only gave it such a high rating because of location, and in my opinion I feel I was too generous and location focused in my rating, I don't think this church has done enough to deserve 4 stars yet and I feel St Martin's in the Bullring deserves a high three star rating.

family of God Church meets here every week. its a welcoming charismatic church which rents the…read morespace from St Lukes. visitors are warmly acknowledged. the music as experienced at the monthly musical service is of a very high standard. some of the congregation including the pastors wife, Anna Zengera are nationally and internationally knownvisiting artistes are encouraged. the women decorate the church beautifully every week as you can see from the photos. refreshments are served after every service with a hot meal after the musical service. feel free to come and worship.

The thing that attracted me to it initially was the fact that it was full of people my age, rather than just being old grannies. Not that there is anything wrong with old grannies - it's just nice to meet people you can connect with who are at a similar life stage to you. It meets in a school (Queensbridge) - which is good for people who are a bit scared of church buildings, but has a building on the Alcester Road in Moseley, which can also be hired out for events, and their performing arts training school runs from there. Riverside has a good outward-looking, community ethos: running various stay & play groups, youth groups, sports groups and courses so there's plenty to get stuck into during the week - it's not all about sitting on pews on Sundays.

The Church provides a large hall and smaller conference type rooms and catering was part of the deal. The service was friendly and the conference room was ample. The larger congregation room was full when I visited and a band played with full PA. Best seats in the house were up on the balcony!

The building itself is pretty basic. It's got a large spacious auditorium with comfy chairs. For me, it really lacked the traditional feel of a church with stained glass windows but I guess when worshipping it shouldn't matter where you go. On a Sunday the choir really goes for it singing a varied selection of songs. More gospel type than classically Christian. I can't sing but if I could I would definitely get up and join in.

Birmingham Cathedral is an impressive Cathedral in the Snowhill area of Birmingham, it is fairly…read moreclose to the train station on Colmore Row. Also referred to as St Philip's Cathedral, it was built over 15 years starting in 1710 and is also surrounded by some nice gardens where there are benches, although the benches could have been better maintained in terms of appearance (paint, cleanliness etc) I was surprised to hear this is the third smallest cathedral in England - with only Derby and Chelmsford being smaller, but it still carries about that charm and grand structure so it does look good within the city and it's surrounding gardens, with even some information about the Cathedral too. It did suffer bombings during the second world war but was restored its current condition shortly after. A small but stunning church in the city centre of Birmingham, and one of my favourite Cathedrals in the UK despite it being one of the smallest. 4*
