I was scheduled for a colonoscopy and endoscopy on Sept. 15th, 2026. I received instructions…read moreseveral weeks ago about everything I needed to do for my "prep" before the colonoscopy (which included 24-hour bowel prep as well as limited food/liquid intake and taking prescribed Suprep pills). This is NOT a pleasant 'prep' procedure and I followed all included instructions. I live in Burlington which is over 2.5 hours away from the clinic in Bismarck and the written instructions I received in the packet also clearly stated that I needed "to have a responsible driver to take me home." After spending the hours leading up to my procedure "prepping" and pooping, we were enroute to my appointment that morning. Due to having to stop once for me to use the restroom and encountering 2 different areas of highway construction, we were running approximately 12 minutes late accourding to my GPS. I phoned the facility at 0805 hrs to advise I would possibly be 10 mins late for my report time (however, I would still be there 20 mins prior to procedure time) and I was told "you don't have an appointment for a procedure today." The woman on the phone told me I had a "consultation" and that there would be no procedure. I tried to explain to her that I most definitely had a colonoscopy/endoscopy scheduled, I already had my consult and that I had paperwork to prove it and that I had already done all the prep for the procedure. She continued to argue with me, speaking over me, and then laughed and stated, "I don't know what else to tell you, you're not having any procedures done today" and "if you've already had your consultation, I don't know what you're driving her for," and hung up. This is after 24 hours of bowel prep, waking up at 3:30am to take my last dose of Suprep, my missing 2 days of work (and pay) and my husband missing a day's pay, and after driving over 2.5 hours. Attached documents clearly show "procedure" date, time and location (see pg 4, top right) and page 5.

I would like to give this surgeon a negative or zero rating. In March 2019 I tore the rotator cuff…read morein my right shoulder while painting our home (It was not a fall as indicated in Dr. Ackerman's July 24th 2019 surgery report). Unfortunately, I also needed a hip replacement (April 2019) and nothing was done with the right shoulder until I had recovered from the hip replacement. Prior to the July 24th 2019 surgery I was told by Dr. Ackerman that there was a 90+% chance that a reverse shoulder replacement would need to be done rather than a repair. The surgery report discusses why the repair was the surgery choice but there is no discussion of why the ball (humeral head) needed to be increased in size. I was told AFTER the surgery that it was to "stabilize" the joint. On August 13th, 2020 Dr. Ackerman performed a left reverse shoulder replacement. At the follow-up appointment (one year) for the left shoulder on August 27, 2021, Dr. Ackerman requested that I raise my right arm over my head to see how I was doing on the right shoulder. He noticed that I had a "twinge" (A grimace might be more appropriate). Throughout the Fall of 2021 the pain in the right shoulder continued to increase. It reached the point where it hurt to lift a small dish into the cupboard. Sleeping and general physical activities became painful/difficult; I could not lift my right arm above shoulder height without excruciating pain. In January 2022 I consulted the Florida surgeon who had initially examined me following the rotator cuff tear after the painting activity in March/April 2019. I went through an additional 5 weeks of painful physical therapy to determine if it was possible to stretch 65-year-old+ muscles and tendons over a 25% larger joint - it was not. On March 17, 2022 a total reverse replacement surgery was performed. The surgery required 2.5 hours and the joint had to be rebuilt with bone chips, BMP putty and screws. Once the pain block wore off, the pain was intense. When orthopedic surgeons operate on the same joint a second or third time, they generally go in through the same incision. The staples were removed on approximately March 24th. Over the next weekend, the incision began bleeding and I returned to the surgeon's office on March 30, 2022. I had developed a hematoma under the incision and a second surgery was performed on March 31st to put in a drain tube. Cultures taken after the second surgery indicated that I had developed an infection which required 6 weeks of antibiotics through a PIC line administered by my wife. The copay/out of pocket cost of the antibiotics was over $2,200. I will be doing some physical therapy for my shoulders for the remainder of my life. I attempted to find an attorney but North Dakota has a $500,000 limit on damages in medical malpractice lawsuits so no out-of-state firm would take my case . One of the Bismarck firms would not take my case because they were fearful that a Bone & Joint Center P.C. (Bone & Joint) surgeon might do a lesser quality surgery if they knew the attorney/patient had won a malpractice case against Bone & Joint! I did locate a Board-certified surgeon who would have testified that the procedure performed by Dr. Ackerman was a "deviation from the standard of care". My Florida surgeon would not speculate on why the bigger ball was used but the bottom line is Dr. Ackerman was too lazy to perform a difficult procedure; he took the easy way out. If even one potential patient doesn't have a surgery performed by this surgeon, this post will have done some good.

I wait at least 30 minutes PAST my scheduled appointment time to be even brought back to an examination room. But as the patient if I showed up 30 minutes late I would not be seen and told to reschedule. So why is their time the only important time? I have had to reschedule other appointments I have behind my doctors appointments at Essentia due to them having horrible time management within their business. The individuals I have worked with are very cold and rude. They are not welcoming or greeting to any one who enters their clinic and it is saddening to see and experience. And I work in healthcare, I work in the hospital. I understand that things happen but the fact that I hear the receptionist state that I was the only pt checking in until 8:15 (almost an hour after me) why am I stuck waiting for 45 minutes to get seen. My manager would never put up with the way I was treated at Essentia and the way the staff poetry themselves at work by being so and unkind. Do better.

She was given a drug test supposedly because she had been seen by a midwife and not a doctor. She was in labor though the baby was five weeks premature. The test came back positive for methamphetamine. As they were preparing to take my friend's baby away, Dr. Iverson told her the tests never were wrong. The staff began to treat her differently as she protested that she didn't even take Tylenol during her pregnancy. When she was re-tested, it came back negative. I can't believe they re-tested her, but luckily they did. Dr. Iverson never apologized after putting someone in total stress while delivering a premature baby and then threatening to take the baby away from a drug addict. My friend says it's the worst time in her whole life. Having a baby should be the best time of a woman's life. Dr. Iverson is lucky she doesn't have to pay thousands more in malpractice insurance.
