This is hands down one of the most memorable hot springs I have encountered. Mostly because It will…read moreboil you if you fall into it. Or at least that's what the sign said. I had no desire to prove it wrong, so we just admired it from a distance...after we poked it with our fingers. This hot spring is out toward the Alvord Desert and Steens Mountain. It is a pretty far drive from Central Oregon, so if you head out here for the weekend, it may not be a bad idea to plan on checking out multiple attractions to make the trek worth it. When you get to the parking area you will see warning signs all around you indicating that the ground is very sketchy and could collapse under your feet. You will want to keep your pets on a short leash so they do not fall into the water. The springs typically boil rapidly and have the traditional butthole smell to them that you get with many other hot springs. There are several springs all over this area to check out. They have a truly unique view of the mountains and the Alvord Desert that is perfect for photography. We arrived here in the summertime, so I am not sure if the springs are ever bearable to sit in in the winter. But I believe I have seen photographs that indicate this is so. Since we did not get a chance to sit in them, we did, however, tie my GoPro to the end of my fishing pole to get some video of the bottom to see what was down there. In hindsight, this was a pretty bad idea as there could have been some dead animals down there and I'm pretty sure I would have puked if that were the case. Luckily all we saw was some old lumber and random debris. If you happen to be checking out a few things in the area, this is well worth adding to your activity list, otherwise, I wouldn't think it would be worth the trek on its own as there are a ton of other hot springs in Eastern Oregon to check out instead.
