This was a surprisingly fun little stop on our bike ride last Sunday. It's kitsch in a lovely way. For every sufficiently large ships that goes by, national anthems are played over loudspeakers and flags are lowered and raised (automatically) to greet ships. While we were there, two smaller ships and a much larger one went by. Each time a "captain" inside the Schulauer Fährhaus restaurant announced some details about the size of the ship and where it comes from /is going to. read more

The Wedel Willkomm Höft or Welcome Point is basically the tourist place to visit in Wedel. It's a pretty simple idea: they play the national anthem for every ship that sails past. There's not much more to it than that, but on a nice day it's very pleasant to sit with a cold beer, watching the ships sail past. read more
