RACIST, CLASSIST, UNPROFESSIONAL BUSINESS AND EMPLOYEES! (DISGUSTING HUMAN BEINGS)
I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Dzyak to have 3 of my wisdom teeth extracted on June 28, 2018. I made the appointment pretty far in advance, back in April because from what I was told, their office stays pretty booked. From April up until the day before my appointment, I hadn't heard anything from the office (besides confirmation that I was coming in), so I assumed everything was ready to go for my surgery. The morning of my surgery at 8:15 I got a call from the office stating that my insurance was only covering a small portion of my extraction and I was left a huge $2,300 out-of-pocket fee. I was shocked that (#1) the cost was this much and (#2) that I was given this information the morning of my surgery. The receptionist (Barine), very rude and dismissive by the way, claimed that they don't make phone calls to get this information, they only do it by mail and received notice in the mail from my insurance company the day before, so they called me as soon as they found out.
I was understanding but just a little flustered because I had no idea that it would cost this much for me. I had taken time off all 3 of my jobs, started taking the Amoxicillin (as directed by Dr. Dzyak) and had been fully prepared to have the extraction done so I wasn't really left with too many options or time, given that I just heard this information the day of my surgery. Barine had me speak with another woman, Kathy, to discuss a payment plan that would work for me and I kindly agreed to pay $150-$200 a month to pay off the balance. I said that I would contact my insurance to verify the information but I would be on my way to get the procedure done.
On the way into the office, I spoke with Barine, and told her that I was running a bit late but I still wanted to get the procedure done, because I already arranged my life around the surgery, on top of having to wait a month and a half to even get on the schedule. Even though the cost seemed high, I just wanted to get it over with. I get into the office and the first thing they tell me is "I'm sorry Ms. Miles but we are going to have to reschedule and see you on a later date. You are late for your surgery". My immediate response was "WHY WOULD YOU GUYS TELL ME TO STILL COME IN, WHEN I ALREADY SAID THAT I WOULD BE ARRIVING A LITTLE LATE". At this point I am livid and really upset with the level of communication and unprofessionalism that I am experiencing. I drove 35 minutes from home, after I called to make sure that it was okay for me to still come in just to be denied service. I then express that I was very surprised that the out-of-pocket cost wasn't mentioned enough in advance for me to decide if I wanted to still come to this office or go somewhere else. Kathy says to me "Well YOU could have called your insurance company and figured out the costs, just as we could have done a LONG time ago". That is not my job to call my insurance company to find that out. I've never heard that from any medical office that I've ever been to in MY LIFE. So at this point I'm even more confused because over the phone, I was told that they only communicate through mail to get the fee schedule from insurance companies. So now I've been lied to about their business procedures, and denied service after waiting since April to have it done.
Kathy then asks, "Well what do you want to do?, We can only reschedule you and see you probably not until August". I just wanted to get the surgery done and treated like a deserving patient as I was promised. She goes in the back, comes back out and says " Well IF we see you today, are you going to STIFF us out of our money and not pay?!" I am fully insulted at this point and shocked that something like that would even come out of a persons mouth to a patient. The fact that Dr. Dzyak could actually see me, when I was told that I had to reschedule, and the only reason that I wasn't being seen was because they think that I am a thief and would never pay them was appalling. I asked if the reason why she asked me that was because I am YOUNG AND BLACK?! She didn't deny it and also doesn't say a word, just shrugs her shoulders and smirks as if it were the truth. So I took that as a yes and still couldn't believe that this was actually happening in front of my face. I had already promised to go through with the payment plan to pay $200/month until I satisfied the entire amount, so the assumption that based on my looks that I was going to STIFF the office out of money was completely outrageous.
They didn't want my business as a young black woman and that was evident in the way everything was handled with me. It's a true reflection of the type of people at the office .The doctor never came out to address anything and none of the other women had anything to say to remedy the dispute with any kind words of understanding or care. Never will step foot here again! Contacting BBB. read more
