I live a 2 minute walk away from this place & have been meaning to check it out. I've tried a handful of times, but can never seem to catch them during business hours. When I finally walk in during business hours I just get an awkward look, a "may I help you" & "I go by appointments & am all booked today". That's it? If this guy were less sassy & more customer focused he could've said something like, "Unfortunately I'm all booked today, but if you give me a minute I can check my calendar & get you scheduled" or "Thanks for stopping by, but can you grab a business card on the counter & call for an appointment?" or "Our number is online. Please call to schedule an appointment & we'll get you taken care of". He could've said anything that made me feel more welcomed back & not like I inconvenienced him by walking in hoping to exchange cash for services rendered. I apologize for the inconvenience sir. This review is long overdue. I am not a person who generally likes the experience of getting my hair cut. I have very dense hair (for a guy) and dread the experience of getting a new stylist each time I go to a place..go through the process of explaining what I want and then returning home feeling unhappy. It all changed with Will. Always willing to work with me on what I want and offering suggestions if I ask for it. We went through so many iterations once I started going to him for haircuts (~5 years now). He was always patient with me..wrote down what I wanted to make sure we can do the same thing everytime I visit. He jokingly has told me few times that he has exhausted the space where he notes down measurements given the number of times we have modified what works for me. He is always pleasant and courteous...ready to strike up conversation or let me be if I am in a reflective mood. I hate feeling different lengths when I run my fingers through my hair and having shorter pieces around my face when I'm putting it up in a twist. To be blunt, I want to feel the bluntness of all one length. It's what I love, it's what looks best. It's what works with the curly waviness that is my hair. (Last year, my formerly trusted haircutter took leave of her senses one day and layered me into a mushroom-head. Without my approval. I think she just felt like being an "artiste" and didn't think of me at all. I frickin' hated it. I didn't go back to have anyone else fix it because it needed to grow back in some first. Didn't want just a trim, I wanted to get rid of the bleedin' LAYERS. Was willing to wait as long as it took to find someone I could trust, and it so happened to be a year and a half.) Thank you Yelp for directing me to William! He rocks! He cut both mine and my partner's hair to our specifications with no problems. Getting rid of the layers cost me six inches, but I'll grow it back and look better along the way. I feel SO much better! My hair looks fabulous and I feel like myself again! I saw William yesterday and I got one of the best haircuts of my life for a low price of ($17 + $4 tip). William takes the time to really look at your hair before jumping in. He told me things about my hair that I was not even aware of. He is a jedi master of hair and with a wave of his hand cowlicks subside and swirls unswirl. During the haircut we talked a lot. He explained to me what he was doing every step of the way, which made the haircut really educational for me. Also, I should mention he was able to perfectly replicate a haircut I liked from a magazine photo I showed him. I completely agree with all of the 5-star reviews. Call ahead of time because he has a really busy schedule. I would also recommend you call on the day of the appointment just to reconfirm, if you are a new customer. I was in the area and need a haircut after shopping at Costco. Since I was in a bit of a rush I decided to stop off at Custom Hair Styling instead of my regular Barber. Located right off of El Camino, Custom Hair Styling, has a big barber pole right outside that is hard to miss. One gets the impression that you are walking into one of those old school barbers based upon where it's located and the look of the building, but once I stepped inside, I was in a Hair Salon... ack... too late to leave to find my manly barber shop. It's a small little place, about 2 - 3 chairs and each chair has a washing station. When I got here, there were 2 stylists and myself and another person was there. One of the stylists had an appointment in 5 minutes and the other stylist (William) was able to sneak me in right before his appointment. So I sat right up in the chair and decided to get my haircut. I have to say, William did a good job of cutting my hair, though I did find it a bit annoying that he was more interested in talking to someone about fixing IE on his laptop than cutting my hair (I think she was her next appointment). But even distracted he did a good job. Overall I was happy with the haircut done by a stylist instead of a barber and a Men's Haircut cost $16+tip so end of day gave him $20 and was on my way. As to rating, one of my big things is getting the flat edge razor to clean up things, that isn't done here, so minus 1 star. Also there is no close by parking (either park on the street off of El Camino or park in the mini mall next door like I did) -1/4 stars and also even though he did a good job, come on, work on your laptop on your own time -1/4 stars. So overall I would say 3.5, worth a consideration if in the area. read more

I don't think I'm saying anything new when I say that Will is AWESOME. When I first arrived, I was definitely surprised because I wasn't expecting a barber shop, but everyone was nice, and no one made me feel uncomfortable. I had previously gotten an awful haircut from a trendy place in RWC, a haircut my uncle - the sweetest guy in the world - called a "hack job." I came to Custom Hair Styling, not knowing what the hell else to do, in hopes that I could leave with a somewhat decent haircut because my birthday was coming up in a few days. Will is an expert at what he does. I wish I would have found him sooner, I probably would have saved myself a lot of money, time, and trouble. He doesn't rush through his appointments, he spends time cutting your hair until it looks right. He's a great conversationalist, I never realize how much time is passing because we're chatting away - and I usually don't talk to the person cutting my hair. He showed me how to use the blow dryer to flatten cowlicks and how to use product to style my hair right. The other two barbers who work with him also seem to do pretty decent work, although I've only had Will cut my hair. He's witty, funny, and knows how to cut hair well. And you can't beat the price. He charges $17 now, not $16, but it's still extremely reasonable considering the quality of the work. Some guys would prefer to pay $12 for a haircut (and it shows), and some girls want to go to salons and pay $50 to trim an inch off their hair (and they can keep flushing their cash down the toilet). I would recommend Will to anyone. One last note: he doesn't take credit cards and is by appointment only! read more

We're getting married soon, so my fiancé agreed to find a decent barber that can style his hair for the day of the wedding. Came here a few weeks ago and it was life changing! Will took the time to explain to my fiancé how to easily style his own hair in just a few minutes. My fiancé's hair has never looked so good!! Will is patient and teaches guys how to fix their own hair so it doesn't seem so intimidating for those guys who usually just get out of the shower, run their fingers through their hair, and walk out the door. Before him every time someone did my haircut I was frustrated. At the beginning I gave him a picture of the hairsyle I want to have and he cut my hair exactly like that picture. Place was a little un-maintained but otherwise looked Ok. William was talkative and told me my options. I let him know of my problem areas and he made sure to avoid them. As usual, I went to Will thanks to yelp. I decided after 4 years of having long hair it was time to go back to the clean cut days. Will definitely had his work cut out for his and his clippers needed frequent lubrication. I went in with a general idea of what I wanted and asked Will what he thought. We settled on an IVY LEAGUE cut with texture on top. During the procedure I got to know Will a little bit better as he conversed with my mom and I. The man definitely can hold a conversation. My cut took a little bit longer than he expected, and his clippers are most likely damaged from my thick VIRILE mange. My cut didn't come out perfect, but it was still a good job overall. The place only seats about 3 people and APPOINTMENTS ONLY NOOBS! For 16 dollars plus tip, you should consider Will if you're a guy (prefers mens hair).
