Rossiters - Inside the shop, in the gift area

I've only ever properly explored the part of Rossiters that sells lots of gifts and knick knacks,…read morejust near the shop's entrance inside Royal Arcade - but in this section alone there's lots of lovely stuff I'd like to be able to afford! From funky ice cube trays to fridge photo frames, it's a great place to pick up small presents. There are some beautiful greetings cards, items of jewellery, well-made children's toys, a few men's accessories, travel bags, purses, umbrellas and much more. The whole place is more intimate than large department stores such as House of Fraser or John Lewis, and the feeling is one of quality over quantity. For me, the gift and homeware areas are probably the most appealing, but glancing into their other 'departments' they have a Homes & Gardens area, a kitchen department, a range of furniture, plus some fabrics, lamps, mirrors, and more. They also offer an interior design service, though I dread to think how much that costs.

Shops like this get me really excited. I'm a big girl when it comes to furniture, home and…read morekitchenware. I just want everything. If I had my way, my house would look like something out of 50s magazine. This store is surprisingly big, considering it's in an arcade, and there is so much in there. The kitchen section is my favourite, because it sells the most adorable retro baking things and teapots and really funky utensils and gadgets that I've never seen anywhere else. Their gift section is also fantastic with brands like L'Occitane and Burt's Bees for toiletries, some really pretty scarves and jewellery, and then beautiful gift bags and paper to wrap them in. It's a shame this department store is hidden away and now has to compete with John Lewis, because it sells such beautiful things and it could be so easily missed if you didn't know about it. It's expensive, but everything is so nice that if I want something, I have to have it however much it costs.

    Debenhams

One I usually avoid if I can help it! This is a review for mainly the beauty department, as the…read moreclothing isn't relevant to me personally. The store is in a great location in the centre of town, so really convenient for browsing or picking up a few things when you're out shopping. Debenhams also offers a great points-based reward card for cosmetics purchases, the Beauty Club Card, giving you a £5 discount for every £167 you spend - there are better reward programs out there but always helpful if you shop here often. The customer service, however, is my main complaint! Most of the time there will be absolutely no-one to be seen at a counter. When I've asked other staff members to help me, even when I know the exact item I want to purchase, they're quite unfriendly and seem like they'd rather be doing literally anything else than serving me and act like my business is a huge hassle and inconvenience to them. Many times I've just gone to buy the same thing in another department store up the road instead! Conversely, when there is someone at the counter, on several occasions I felt like I was being forced into a purchase, as if the staff were completely desperate to get rid of certain products, rather than considering my personal needs or being genuinely helpful. A miserable and stressful shopping experience! Additionally, I would NOT recommend the Benefit Brow Bar at this location! I'd heard so many good things about Benefit and wanted to get my overgrown brows shaped in time for my upcoming holiday, instructing the technician to leave them full with a natural shape, as I only wanted them tidied up. Rather than using the vacant treatment room, she waxed my brows in front of all the customers (and this was quite a busy day) and I noticed a few laughing and sniggering at my discomfort. It was much more painful than any brow waxing I'd ever experienced as she kept waxing the same areas over, and when I looked in the mirror.. nearly all of my brow hairs were gone! Instead of full, luscious brows I was left with two skinny tadpoles and an expression of permanent surprise. I started to cry a little after seeing them and she had the audacity to ask if I wanted to make another appointment! Needless to say I will NEVER go back and had to use so much makeup to make them resemble eyebrows for months afterwards. If you want value for money and a pleasant shopping experience, stay well away! Although Debenhams have a rewards system and sometimes have deals worth browsing in the sales after Christmas, I won't be coming back any time soon. There are other department stores in town selling the same products with far better customer service!

To me Debenhams is now a thriving and really good department store. The broad range of clothing is…read moreespecially good as is the homewear. Staff are helpful and unlike some stores the racks are full of different sizes. Well-located in the town centre it is easy to pop in on a Saturday or in a lunch hour and you can always find what you re looking for.

A fabulous department store…read more This is just about still family owned. and really has a traitional feel without being old fashioned. It is far bigger than the Poole branch by a long chalk. There are lots of concessions in all departments, so there is a lot of choice. And although expensive, their own brand is very high quality. I love going in here - it just oozes class and taste. I once had my handbag stolen, but it's not the fault of the store. There is a cemetery on a nearby corner and drunks hang out there, and will make a dash through neighbouring shops in opportunist fashion. One night, however, a tomb stone was used to break a window at Beales!!!

Although pricey their…read moreproducts are always good quality and loads to choose from - jewellery (brands inc Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein and Gucci), accesories, nightwear, Homeware etc. There's loads in store fashion wise too with brands for men and women like Ben Sherman, French Connection, Coast and Timberland. Beales is also great place to come for beauty advice, as you walk in you have the huge Mac and Origins sections at the front and then many other counters down the middle for brands such as eve lom, clarins, clinique. It also has natural and organic brands on the shelving down the side with brands such as Dr Hauschka, Neals Yard and Burts Bees (although there is no sales assistant for advice on these brands, Dr Hauschka occasionally has instore makeover days - dates on website). The sales assistants vary, i have had some really nice women give me advice and some very unhelpful advice too - depends which counter you go to. They also have a cafe and restaurant but they are soooo expensive - although nice food, i dont think its worth the money (go to debenhams!) Rated 3 as i only visit now and then for gifts really and i now would prefer to go to space nk for beauty.
