This review describes my experience visiting the Co-operative Education area of the Co-op and Career Centre building at Wilfred Laurier University. The building is located at King Street North and Lodge Street. I was here with my manager to interview students for the summer work term. It was our first time at Laurier. As a visitor, I had to apply for a temporary parking pass online. It's allows me to park at any white or gold permit parking lot. The catch at this building is that there a small parking lot when you pull in from Lodge Street. If you get there before 8:30 am, you can nab a spot, which happened to us. However, you get there later, you need to park further away. The Co-operating Education area is on the second floor. We walked up the stairs. I don't know if there is an elevator in this building, but I didn't see one. The building is bright and pleasing to the eye. We were greeted immediately by a staff member and shown to a boardroom where we were to conduct our interviews. We were assigned a co-ordinator, who made sure that the candidates were led to a room to do a test. After the allotted test time was up, my manager would take the candidate over to the boardroom next door and have us conduct the interview. The test room and boardroom were next to each other. I loved that arrangement. What stands out is how hospitable everyone was. We got the tour of the floor and where we should be. Scott, our co-ordinator, made sure that we were taken care of. He got my manager tea and hot water. I had brought in a massive, free venti iced cinnamon cloud macchiato from Starbucks before I hit the road. I was caffeinated and good. Our interviews were seamless and everything worked well. The boardroom accommodated our laptop needs. Wifi was available. However, there is a timeout after roughly an hour, which is a pain to enter all login credentials again. I had a great experience here. The rumors are true, Laurier is an amazing school! Those who bleed purple and gold know what I'm talking about, but for an outsiders perspective, I recommend you check it out. When a school is confined to a one block radius, a tight family feel is just the beginning of your experience. The people are friendly, and the profs actually get to know you since class sizes can range from 12-200. The food on campus is a little bleh. Since they got rid of Spring Rolls in the Food Court the options are a little slim, but after pulling an all nighter, anything edible pretty much gets the job done. Washrooms! For some weird reason compared to other schools, Laurier has A LOT of washrooms. And by that I mean if you walk into the Schlegel building, there are 5 washrooms within a 30 second walk in different directions. All clean and well kept. Study Space can be an issue though, especially for group projects. Try booking out library rooms a week in advance to get the space you need! Otherwise you'll be peaking in every classroom in desperate need of study space. The gym is also pretty solid. A newly renovated building with 4 dance studios, a gym, a pool, and 2 floors of cardio and weight equipment. Heads up, there's a washroom on the second floor! Lesson learned after I ran up and down 4 stories in the middle of dance class just to find a washroom right beside the studio I was in! Overall, worth checking out. Small schools aren't for everyone, but check it out to decide for yourself. read more

Laurier has honestly been the biggest regret of my life. I've always been passionate about entrepreneurship and so was struggling between choosing UW for Engineering or Laurier for Business. The only reason I chose Laurier was to get business co-op experience but in second year my grandpa passed away before my 10-minute co-op interview that would decide if I'm in co-op for the next 3 years. So now instead of actually learning through an engineering program, I've spent the last 4 years learning absolutely useless outdated material that has very much led me in the wrong direction as an entrepreneur and forced me to de-learn to learn as a leader (which I'm told is the point of business school to begin with). Surprisingly, the real world does not operate on business key-words which is all I've been taught over these past 4 years. I have not had one single prof with industry experience that they can attest to. "Those who can't do, teach" I suppose. And I'm not even bashing teachers, just the ones who aren't qualified to share their lack of knowledge. I'm honestly astounded that I ever thought this was "Canada's Best Business School" or that we rank "Number one in student satisfaction". Laurier pumps out students with no ability to think critically but loaded with outdated knowledge. I will be graduating with so much student debt in exchange for wasting 4 years of my life that could be spent so much better. Also, entrepreneurship at Laurier is disgracefully far behind UW, I'm not surprised though; UW promotes science and critical thinking while Laurier is a business that doesn't seem to care but knows how to advertise and sell that we are the "best business school" ... whatever that means. If you are considering Laurier, I cannot stress any more that you should reconsider. read more

An amazing University- you feel like you are part of a tight knit community but you still have the resources of a medium sized school in a city. A great place to study, work and volunteer! read more

The campus is small and compact, thus as far as universities go it is easy enough to find your way around. Parking can be tricky, as the lot numbers are sometimes hard to understand/find. read more

I will say straight up this review is biased because I attended this institution for my undergraduate degree. All that being said it was the best decision I ever made in my life. Not only did I get to study something I loved at a place where the professors actually cared and engaged with me during my course of study but it transformed me as a human being socially. WLU lives up to its reputation of being one of the most spirited and involved student body out of any other university in Ontario. I was able to find my social and athletic niches here while exploring other new ones that helped me broaden my horizons. The campus is small, and although growing rapidly, still manages to maintain a small town feel where if you really want to can know almost everyone. As a local that lived at home in Kitchener for 2.5 years of my degree rushing the Sigma Chi Fraternity at WLU was the greatest decision I ever made in my life. Not only was this the catalyst for engaging myself on campus and in what the university had to offer but the most valuable skills, experiences and connections I gained while in university came from being a member of that organization. Additionally I took the opportunity to spend a semester abroad in Australia at the Australian Catholic University thanks to great study abroad programs offered by WLU. I wouldn't trade my experience here for anything in the world, great education and great life experience that made me a better person.
