To a visitors eye, it would be as if the entire Pennsylvania Amish country came to Brooklyn, minus the horse drawn buggies. My neighbor, Mr. Chen, a 30 year member of our tightly knit Forest Hills street took ill four months ago, and I had slight reservations (mixed emotions) about going to see him even though we spent a lot of time together over the years. A stroke hit him quite hard and I was told that it severely hampered his memory, that he does not speak and that he mostly confined to rolling chairs and mechanical beds. Nursing homes always feel like Gods waiting room to me, they sadden me as the next step seems so near. Attached tubes to veiny bodies, hollowed screams down long halls and the empty eyes fluttering about are all abound. Bedford is smaller in scale, attendees and health care workers are on the go, room to room, activity to meals, smiles beaming when they look up to greet you. I found this to be the continuous theme from my arrival to my departure and the end result? Peaceful minds, content eyes, friends and family's gratitude. She had not prepared for our appointment, but the team called me 30 mins before the appointment to ask if my insurance was valid (this was a follow up 10 days from the first appointment). You'd think they would want to make sure everything was ready. The doctor didn't know what she was talking about and told me essentially to come back if my numbers are in the diabetic range. Not interested in prevention only the cure where money can be made. When I got a bill from them in December, I was wondering how the amount made sense. I called my insurance and learned they didn't even bill for the follow up yet someone had asked my credit card number for the copay. So the insurance company had to call them to get it billed on my behalf. They are now sending me a bill still that is incorrect. Thankfully I didn't pay in cash but used my card and have a documented receipt. Because they are claiming I owe them copays that I've clearly already paid.

From the time she arrived, there was someone to guide us through the process, from Galina the social worker, to Tamara, the wonderful 4th floor supervisor who is the heart and backbone of the unit. The nursing staff, and especially the techs, treat my mother with genuine kindness and patience. They always greet her with a smile and kind words, and go out of their way to keep her comfortable and calm. A special thanks to the physical therapists that work with my mother for their encouragement and commitment to her progress. They celebrate every small victory with her and somehow make difficult sessions feel hopeful. We've seen steady, remarkable improvement that we honestly didn't think possible. The building and decor are a bit dated but don't be put off by it -- the facility is clean, well-maintained, the food is good, and the culture is one of kindness, compassion and a willingness to help above all else.

She put a lot of care into a plan of getting me back to a place of mobility and building strength, I'm really grateful I had her to help me through the process. She was always really helpful to answer questions about workouts outside of PT and what was happening physically with my body step-by-step. Spear's app was also really incredible as a way of referencing exercises when at home. Spear does rely on some independence during sessions, as the appointments start with the PT, and then you continue the session with an assistant. I eventually left to get more specialized care as I needed more 1:1 time with my PT. I left my experience at Spear feeling stronger than before and having a larger understanding of the full picture of my recovery!
