There is a pre-school called Armed Services YMCA that you could put your child in, a community pool for Island Palm residents, a car selling lot, a small and quaint bowling alley, and a small PX. I believe the Navy housing is farther back behind Wiliwili. The park is well kept. I'd recommend this area of you're ever stationed here and there is an opening.

I Remember when we first got stationed here my husband said to me Wheeler army airfield? Isn't that the first place to get hit before Pearl Harbor? Yes, yes it was. There's interesting historical signs about it On the main road by the big gray building and others in the pink Amelia Airhart hanger on the airfield. Many of the homes and hangers that got hit still have the bullet holes in them as historical landmarks. So we live here with respect and humility from the past & excitement about the future. This base is small but friendly & traffic isn't as bad as Schofield in my opinion. AVOID crossing between bases if you can in the morning. It will add an hour to your day. Wheeler has a wonderful new small bowling alley (only 4 lanes) with yummy food beer & free pool Thursday & Friday. Unfortunately due to sequestration they are not able to be open on other days At this time. It was built for the barracks next-door but tends to attract more of an older and family crowd. There are nondenominational Christian worship services at Wheeler Chapel 11 am Sunday's with Potlucks every first Sunday. Pagans meet in the church 1 Friday/mth although I hear it's basically a bunch of young gaming kids and probably not super religious. The Community Center behind the chapel has a pool, Small fitness center, and small movie theater you can reserve for parties. There are several great playgrounds all over the base. There is A barbershop, a bank, a delicious DFAC, shoppette, and a gym in and around the big gray building. The only gas station is on Schofield. All of the housing is pretty awesome in my opinion including the older historical WWII housing (except for poor Camp Stover in the back.) Make sure to make your way over to Schofield on the weekends for the KoleKole (sp?) Pass Hike. It's open to the public usually too. It's only .8 mi one way & doable with small kids & the views are phenomenal. I'm going to leave here with such fond memories! And those Mountain View's?! Breathtaking!! Historically Hawaiian Warriors trained on this plateau also (as they still do as part of the Hawaii National Guard.) Don't miss out on learning about the local Hawaiian history while you're here. I recommend the Shakka app if you're driving around the area. And while you're at it, stop at Zippy's and get some local food and donuts, it's kind of like a Hawaiian Denny's. Dole is only 2 Miles up the road for visiting family & tourists. We also make a great 'Gateway to the North Shore .'Last, all the helicopter & air traffic doesn't bother my family & we can't hear much in our house. [COVID 19] I usually…read morego to the Aina Haina or Hawaii State Public Library, but the two books I wanted were only available at this Hawaii Kai location, right across from Koko Marina center on Lunalilo Home Road. There's abundant parking, and the pickup system is fast and efficient. After placing a hold on your books online and choosing an appointment day & time, you just go to the front where a worker will scan your library card and hand you your books. That's it! It's rather small, so you could tour the whole facility in about an hour. The facility is across the way from the Pacific Aviation Museum. Your tour starts off in the lobby in where you circle around the large "sphere". Various images are projected on the sphere including the topography of earth versus Mars, the direction of the winds, and what I thought was cool, is they show you real time how many and where all aircrafts are flying. After that the kids are taken into a room with a large floor map and quizzed on world geography. Then we were directed into the "augmented sand box" room. Here the kids got to play in a sand box as the change in topography and elevation were projected on a large screen in front of them. Our last stop was the tsunami information Center where the kids learned about where tsunamis come from and the warning signs. They got to play with a "wave box" and sit in a conference room overlooking the 24 hour tsunami surveillance center. They just opened the facility for people to tour so there isn't too much to see, but the things you do get to learn are interesting. There's a cafeteria to grab a meal or snack. There's also a library and lots of pamphlets on different topics related to weather and all things oceanography related. If you're into things like that, you might want to visit while you're on Ford Island. Speaking of Ford Island, you need military access to get here. I don't know how admission works since we were invited on a field trip sponsored by Geographical information services. I'm sure if you give them a call expressing interest, you can get in.

This is a review of the cafeteria inside the NOAA building at Ford Island…read more If you have base access, the cafeteria inside the NOAA building is a good choice for a work lunch. If you've made it past the military guard at the Ford Island bridge, go to your extreme right at the roundabout. You'll recognize the NOAA building right away. It will be on your right. It's all tall glass windows and steel and pretty unlike the Navy buildings. I know, I know. The Navy has other priorities. It spends its money on the fleet and sailors. Once you get to the NOAA building, you'll find a large open parking lot with ample parking spaces. Parking is free. Inside the building, you need to give the NOAA security guard your ID ( state driver license is ok) and in exchange you'll get a Visitor Badge that you keep until you're done with the visit. My friends and I go there for the cafeteria. It serves hot, freshly prepared daily specials. You can also find soups, sandwiches, muffins, pastries and burgers. There are cold items like fruit cups, juice drinks and yogurt. The salad bar is a great deal. It's not fancy. Ruby Tuesday offers more items at its salad bar, but NOAA is more affordable and not as crowded. What's neat is that the cashier weighs the container your salad is in and doesn't charge you for it or for the dressing if you put it in a separate container. I wish other places did that. If you use a plate for your meal, there's a cool conveyor belt that you can put the plate on and it takes it to the back to be washed. Sort of like a sushi restaurant conveyor belt except it's only for dirty plates. There's plenty of seating with great views of Pearl Harbor. NOAA staff even eat their homemade lunch in the area which is cool. Be sure to get there by 11:20 am at least because you could wait a while for your food unless you go with the salad bar or cold items. At the end, give your Visitor Badge back to the guard to get your ID back.

The graduation ceremony law enforcement recruit class (LERC) 25-01 held their awards ceremony there. The auditorium was cleaned and plenty of seating. The air conditioning was working very well. However, we came away with a LOT more information and history about these buildings. The Mission Memorial Buildings is a complex comprised of 3 separate buildings which face King Street and its closest neighboring Government building is Honolulu Hale at the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center. Currently, the 3 buildings are identified as the MMB (Mission Memorial Building), MMA (Mission Memorial Auditorium ) and MRC (Municipal Reference Center). Its Neo-Classical red brick structures are the ONLY example of Jeffersonian style in Hawai'i. TIMELINE: - 1915 to 1916: Originally, these buildings were commissioned by the Hawaii Evangelical Association in preparation for the centennial commemoration of the arrival of American Protestant missionaries in 1820. This complex of buildings served as the headquarters of the Hawaii Evangelical Association, part of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society, a non-profit educational institution and genealogical society whose membership is comprised of descendants of the first American Protestant missionaries to Hawaii. The HMCS is also the parent organization of MissionHouses Museum. The Mission Memorial Building (MMB) site was the previous home of the Kawaiahao Seminary and the Honolulu Mission Printing Office. - 1930: The Municipal Reference Center was established as part of this complex where it houses publications issued by and for the City and County agencies. - 1944: The City & County of Honolulu procured these buildings in an effort to ease the congestion of offices in City Hall (Honolulu Hale). Agency offices were located here for decades. - 2003: The City decided to renovate the auditorium from office spaces to its original state. The auditorium is currently used for City and County of Honolulu departmental activities, local, non-profit organizations can also use it, especially for cultural and arts events. All events must be free and open to the public. - 2010: The Mission Memorial Building (MMB) was renovated and houses the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts, the Neighborhood Commission Office, and the Information and Complaints branches. The Department of Customer Services' Public Information Center is also located inside the building near the entrance. Okay, so it may seem to be "boring" to visit these agencies but I find it fascinating to discover and learn about the history of my home State of Hawai'i. Upon confirmation that I was signed up to volunteer, I received a very detailed email. Specifically they provided all the the things a volunteer should have: report date, time, location, parking information, what areas we'll be able to meet the needs of the community, lunch shifts, what to wear, etc. Upon arrival of the Hawaii Convention Center I easily found the group of volunteers all decked in their red shirts. The President and Vice President of Community Engagement was very welcoming & introduced me to other members. All the volunteers gathered around the Head Volunteer point of contact & gave each organization their respective roles. I was paired up with one of their Vice Presidents and we scanned their purchased tickets and banded the early access and regular access. What was great was my paired volunteer member kept me engaged and was very welcoming. Toward the end of our shift we took our lunch break and by the time we finished lunch our shift was over. I took that time after volunteering to visit some of the many vendors. I should have stayed back a little bit longer, as I was boarding the shuttle back to parking I heard Jake Shimabukuro was going to play on stage (next time).
