They make it possible for up and coming artists to be known on the scene by playing their tracks on the air and putting them on a showcase. The Local Lightning Spotlight is a feature that showcases two local artists each week by playing their music between 2:40pm and 8:40pm for the entire week of the Spotlight. This is a great amount of exposure for any up and coming act. This kind of programing can only happen at an independently owned station. When you listen in to this program you can actually get an idea of what is going on in the clubs around town, and what bands are hot to go see. Another great show that makes Lightning 100 a five star radio station is the Sunday Night Live Broadcast of a Nashville band. The show broadcasts live from one of the many great venues in town. Recently the shows have been held at 3rd and Lindsley. This way you can see if the band sounds as good live as they do on their record. That's right - you can nerd out in person. I follow Nashville Public Radio on Facebook, where they often post events that take place at the studio that you can attend. I've attended two live tapings of one of their podcasts - Movers and Thinkers. Sign up online, walk in, and be there to hear a podcast taped. It's a cool experience that gives context and a little extra meaning to the stories you hear on your local NPR station. It's also a ton of fun.

WPLN offers all the popular national programs like This American Life, Car Talk, Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me, Fresh Air, Prairie Home Companion and Radiolab as well as local news and programs. Local hosts Nina Cardona and Anita Bugg report the news with smooth, practiced voices, and they provide local stories as well as national news. While Nashville's list of locally broadcast shows isn't extensive, it certainly provides the local flavor you'd expect from Music City. Among the local programs is Bluegrass Breakdown, which is hosted by Dave Higgs and features some pretty impressive bluegrass acts. When WPLN isn't broadcasting national and local news and music programs, they typically play Classical music, which sometimes provides a much-needed break from typical radio formats.

Several years ago it started repeating the morning shows back to back which started my shift to other stations.( Down to 4 Stars) Recently it shifted to all talk and shows with no daytime classical music. Classical music is now available only if you have, or buy, HD capability, or have a computer that you are willing to dedicate or reduce it's performance by utilizing it as a 'radio'. ( Woops 3 Stars) All and all it has turned into 'just another station' and has nothing to set it apart. (Two stars) Since this was the only available outlet for this genre, I feel the public has been really let down.
