High above the south entrance into the State House, symbolically historic figures can be seen. The limestone figures were created in 1887 by artist Herman Carl Mueller to represent the key figures in the history of our state. There are four statues/groups on one level and a gilded stone eagle looks over them.
The four groups of statues are as follows (left to right): "The Indians" shows a family of three who lived here before the western expansion and where the name of our city and state came from; "The Farmer" represents the early settlers who mainly lived off the land; "The Blacksmith" represents the beginning of business and modern development in the area; and "The Pioneer Family" shows the most modern imagery of those who settled here.
