Springtime Garden maintained by Nursery and Kindergarten students and teachers.

My son is finishing his first year in the nursery, and after considering many options and touring 13 excellent programs, I could not be happier about choosing Westside Waldorf for him. Beautiful Early Education Team! Beautiful Campus! We receive the most consistently sweet morning greeting by Diego or Yonni at the gates, (key pieces of the security team) and a warm farewell each day from them as well. Following that, a peaceful journey begins at the nursery. In the mornings, parents gather with the children to ease them into their day away from home. I often miss this 15 minutes of community fellowship, but I love the days that I do make it. My son sees everyone at campus and just goes right into playing. He is a very social, confident and friendly personality. I love the calm, peaceful energy that he is met with by his INCREDIBLE teacher, Archer. His teacher was also a Waldorf student and has dealt with every challenge faced from parents and students with grace and with intelligent responsiveness. He has been consistent in his temperament while meeting the varied demands of each child with flexibility. The daily snacks are apparently delicious according to my 3 year old's accounting. He wants me to make oatmeal and rice and beans the way they make it at school. He has also been known to request several servings of vegetable soup at snacktime! The thoughtfulness of the program and the creative arts is reflected in the best gifts that the children make for us parents for several occasions Not to mention the sweet festivals that feel like utopian moments carved out in time With my son at Westside Waldorf, I enjoy a peace of mind that is invaluable. I know that he is safe and happy, nurtured and building upon his natural gifts while maintaining his confidence and joyous nature. I am so happy that this is a place of peace where my son can thrive and his teacher and the team around him can focus on that work without the residue of drama and trauma that create hostile environments in so much of the world. This place is not ofcourse for everyone. Children must be mostly potty trained when they start at 2.5 years old. Parents must have a commitment to a sense of peace and calm, value a natural rhythm and nature and be commited to allowing this pedagogy to thrive by letting it flow rather than inserting some of our more mainstream worldly ways and ideas.

The teachers at WWS cultivate earth centered, multimodal experiential learning with an awareness of natural systems.

After a handful of years here, we finally decided to cut out of the Seven Arrows cult and, yes,…read moreforfeit several years of "investment" in our kids' futures. Community is their #1 priority and it comes at the cost of what ought be their first priority: a competitive academic education. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are lost to dressing up the campus for events but not a dime is spent on Faculty professional development. Also their version of "community" is only as good as the amount of money you give and the parental cliques you can endear yourself to. If you are parents in a dual-income family, who can't always volunteer at 11am or give up entire days to help out, you are excommunicated by both the school and other parents. We found these overt acts of judgement against the value and ethics of modeling business-building with our kids through our careers to be abhorrent. The school regularly weaves in a denial-based approach toward any concerns you might voice, all while purporting to possess a growth mindset. Margarita, the Head, runs the school with an iron fist - God forbid you ever question anything. For a school that waves the flag of "community and openness", what they really want is everyone to nod in agreement, roll up their sleeves and volunteer all their time, donate generously to support private street closures of non-inclusive events, and tiny-campus makeovers. From a student perspective, it's now well-researched and broadly understood that if a child is bored in class, socializes with peers, or is otherwise not engaged in the curriculum, this is an indication that the program offered is not meeting the intellectual or creative needs of the student. And a well funded school has many options to better flex to the student's needs, offer material through alternative learning modalities, or even revise of the approach/methods altogether. When our kids were bored, the school admin pointed their fingers at our kids (accusing them of having ADHD), or at us (for poor parenting skills) and they heavily implied that our kids be medicated. BEWARE: The school uses a cunning strategy of building their case by recommending that the parents have the child fully evaluated, with a request that the pychologist share their findings with school. In truth, they are building fodder against you, in case they want to "council families out" if you disagree with them on other things. Your physician's account becomes a "menu of opportunity" for the school to manipulate you into seeing things their way, or else have you relinquish your entire investment. Because everybody knows that unless you demonstrate your liking for the Kool-Aid they serve up, your child's future (by way of recommendation letters, support, and referrals at the time of graduation) is at their mercy. Today, the "campuses" are all over the place and disjointed. While the Masquerade event is still a great student experience, our older child was repeatedly bullied by the offspring of entitled, Instagram Mommy wannabe's but the school did little to upset parents with deep pockets. After all, Margarita's gotta bankroll her sprawling Riviera estate somehow. Also BEWARE: When it comes time to give their recommendations of your child to the next school, they don't hold back any details. From how you, as parents, participated in fundraising and underwriting opportunities, to whether or not you have the Rolodex to connect the school to famous thought-leaders, to how much you volunteered time at event preparations, and how much you can publicly advocate on behalf of the school, they tell ALL. And regarding your children, they share everything, too, including medical information (illegal) and details that might actually make your children look bad. Do you really want to place this power into someone else's hands? There's an unbelievably high rate of teacher turnover; many are fresh out of college. And the ones who had "ins" at Harvard Westlake, Brentwood, and Marlborough are now gone. As are many wonderful families who decided they had had enough. We also decided to cut the chord. Though our first child graduated, we didn't want to repeat our mistakes with our second one.

She started off in kindergarten with Ms. Carey, and she couldn't possibly have had a more pleasant and nurturing experience. It was the perfect introduction to her grade school experience, and set the tone for 5 more years of excellent education. I'm not going to name all of her teachers, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses, but I can tell you without a doubt that each and every one of them has the credentials and the desire to provide an outstanding experience for their students. Our son is actually starting out in 4th grade tomorrow, and he started in Ms. Carey's kindergarten class as well. He is just as happy, excited, and well adjusted as our daughter is. They've both made lots of quality friends, and we've developed some amazing long term friendships with many families from Roosevelt. We've also had some mishaps, some big disappointments, but I think that's to be expected. We've just moved on and not dwelt on the bad experiences. I have noticed that most of the negative experiences I've seen, have been exacerbated by other parents or other kids who stirred up unnecessary drama or gossip, rather than looking at the big picture and trying to resolve issues quickly and quietly, like adults. And for sure, there are random incidents of inconsiderate behavior, by kids and parents, but overall it's very rare, and easy to resolve. They do a great job of teaching the kids respect, and compassion, in my opinion. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the public school experience my kids have gotten at Roosevelt. And I'm pretty sure a huge majority of the other parents would agree with me. It bothers me that only the ones with gripes to voice, write reviews. I'm trying to counter that here. Roosevelt definitely deserves more than a 3-star overall rating!
