OK, so after reading all the Yelp reviews, I decided to take the plunge and check this place out. While going through the reviews, there were two things that stood out... A) Tony is a great barber B) A second mortgage might be needed to pay for the haircut Both were fairly true, though I didn't have to connect with my banker. I told Tony exactly how I wanted my hair cut and he NAILED it! The cut and the length were exactly what I wanted. He even readjusted my part - which very few barbers seem to bother with anymore. After I told him how I wanted it cut, he said, "you want a really good trim", which given my diminished scalp is typically what I am seeking but rarely seem to get. I've only had one other barber whose work I've been this satisfied with and sadly he retired (and passed away) a few years ago. Tony is among the best to be found without a doubt. Now, as for the cost. In looking at the reviews, I was seeing $37 as the high mark - but that was a couple years back, so I went in figuring it would be $40, maybe $42. Nope... $45. That's twice as much as I've paid the barber I've been seeing in recent times - who's a nice guy, but whose haircuts are not at Tony's level. So, will I go back? Yes. Will I go back as frequently as I'd like? I doubt it. My five star rating is based entirely on the quality of the haircut I received and my experience with Tony overall. If I were to factor in the cost, the real rating would be about 3 1/2 stars. So that's it in a nutshell - hope my review helps anyone who reads it to make the right choice for themselves. read more

Can't recommend this place enough. Tony is a down to earth guy and gives phenomenal cuts. Won't go anywhere else in Oak Park.

Excellent Location, Exceptionally Talented, Beautiful Atmosphere, Family Friendly, Truly A Must Have

So, I had a good haircut. Thing is after an hour or so of chatting w barber Lisa throughout haircut, she didn't have receipts to process transaction. This confused me as I didn't want a receipt. After 10 minutes of waiting, no solutions, her calling colleagues, I offered to go to an ATM and pull cash. I am a repeat customer here and a local. She asked me for my ID while I grabbed cash across street. I honestly could not believe it and found this offensive given long standing business relationship. Think it was just plain disappointing to offer a solution, be a repeat customer and local, and treated this way. Not going back, especially if mutual respect not there. How would you feel if your local barber did this to you because their system was down? read more

I have had my haircut by both Tony and Ava and both times it was a phenomenal cut. Today, Tony was able to fit me in between appointments and still took his time to give me exactly what I wanted. 10/10 can't wait to go back again. Totally worth it. read more

I've had my hair cut at Westgate as well as my two sons and have been satisfied every time. I wanted to address the criticism of the price being high. I have had very good haircuts at a neighborhood chain for years because I found a good stylist and got consistent results. When her schedule changed and our calendars no longer aligned, I tried Westgate. The cost of the cut IS more expensive, more than double, but Westgate easily takes more than double the time. There's a higher level of detail and service here that you won't experience at the chains. And I'm not criticizing the business model of the chains because I think a talented stylist can work anywhere but they need to get customers out the door faster as the price per cut is lower. If the increased care and service for an increased price is not worth the money for you then you probably won't be happy. For me, it's well worth it. I've had two different barbers here and they both were excellent. read more

Smaller, and more intimate than the big factory barbers where you feel like a number being rushed in and out. More 1 on 1 time to explain and discuss what you you are looking for. Best haircut I've ever had. I walked in a year ago and Tony took care of me. Haven't let another person touch my hair since. He pays more attention to detail than most surgeons I know. Tony takes his time to make it right so I don't mind waiting from time you to time. Haven't had much of an issue when I call ahead. $35 isn't a cheap haircut but you get what you pay for and it's a good price for the time he takes. Haven't regretted a dime spent at Westgate. Ava, the owner, also does great work as I can see her customers leave happy as well. 5 stars is deserved for this place. read more

They make people of color feel very uncomfortable and very unwelcome. they asked me to prepay for my haircut like I was going to run out on them. I really thought nothing of it and I noticed a few clients paying for their cut after it was done. NO I would not recommended shop to no one. Just an average generic cut. read more

Barber, it is a magic word. It brings up memories, nightmares, smiles, and this mythical place of movie lore. Everyone from Norman Rockwell to Ice Cube has created art depicting it's influence on the American landscape. Some of us have memories of terror, some of us ran away from them as we got older. To some of us it is apart of our graduation into manhood, or a part of our communities culture, some of us found stylist, some of us found supercuts. I for one stayed away from the barber for many years, I went the route of the stylist, because I had many a bad haircut from a grumpy old man when I was a kid. I was in sort of haircut limbo, I knew Megacuts was a bad idea, I hated trying to explain to stylist that I just wanted a haircut (not highlights), I just wanted a good haircut, without some grumpy man trying to give me a high and tight. I wanted something more, I searched, I looked, I failed. Then I found something amazing, a real barber shop. A place that was meant for men, Ladies you have you salons, we have barbers. I found a place in NOLA called Aiden Gill. I walked in I found products for shaving, man care, etc. What I did not know was that they had a barber in the back. I went to check it out, I have not ever been to anything but a barber since Rule one: A barber does not have to be a man. Rule two: A barber should know hairstyles. Rule three: A barber should be able to talk shit about the times, their customers, and make you feel happy your a part of it. Rule four: A barber should offer you beer or coffee when you walk in (or soda for the little guys). Rule five: A barber should be able to give you a good shave. Rule six: You should look better when you leave. Rule seven: They should only cut mens hair. I looked for a long time until I found this little gem under my nose, I went into Chicago, Elmhurst, La Grange, etc. All I wanted was right here in my little village. Eva is the best, she gets it, and has the skills to pay the bills. She will also make you laugh, she is a pill. Once I found Westgate, I have not gone anywhere else (unless an emergency out of town). I am happy to pay the price ($30.00) for a haircut. It is not a lot to pay for a craftperson who knows there trade, and spends their time trying to make my old and busted ass look better. Parents take your sons here, give them a good haircut, and the memories will be had. read more

I don't review on Yelp often, which is a unfortunate because I have found some great places via positive reviews here. And likely avoided some spots too. I am writing this as the haircut I got at Westgate recently was really disappointing. It cost twice as much and I left half as satisfied as with my former barber in Chicago. Ava, who cut my hair, spent a majority of the time putting down a barber who had just left working at Westgate. The other part of the time she wasn't really cutting my hair either. What was she actually doing? She also took a potshot at who cut my hair previously because the hat I wore into her shop left a indent in my hair. In the end I won't be returning. I am sure there are better shops in the area and when I find one I'll share. read more

I love the set up in there; great atmosphere. Specialty coffees, big screen TV, comfy chairs. The ladie who runs the place is hilarious, kinda bitchy but I like that. I only have two issues w/ the place they don't take plastic and she never uses scissors. That being said it's the best place for a guy to get his hair cut in the OP. read more

I've been scouting around for a new barber and find that it's difficult to find any these days. It's a dying art form, getting away from the toxic stench of chemicals at hair salons, which are not barbershops. I'm still unsure about paying $30 for a haircut. Fine haircut, although I don't consider my hair especially difficult to cut. She listened to what I wanted which was nice. I walked in and didn't have to wait, but the cut still took about 45 minutes....which is an eternity. I still am trying to figure out what she was doing most of the time, other than trimming millimeter by millimeter. Attention to detail is nice, but I thought this was a little overboard. I thought $30 was a little steep for what I got--not absurd, and certainly not an "expensive" haircut, but more than I would have expected for this type of place. read more

Was not happy with my haircut here. I am not too hard to please, but having to ask my girlfriend to clean up the stray hairs that are sticking out the next day is just aggravating. The barber did not seem attentive to detail and somewhat rushed, possibly due to the fact that she double-booked the time I reserved and had a regular customer waiting. Unfortunate. Could have gotten the same haircut elsewhere for less than half the price. Won't be back. read more

Top notch! I get my hair cut by Lisa, and she never disappoints. She is technically proficient and has a great sense of what works, but she also listens well and appreciates my input. Best of all, Lisa's haircuts hold up, so my hair looks good for several weeks. Lisa is great, but everyone at Westgate does an awesome job. I can't recommend it highly enough. read more

I'm sorry my first review has to be a bad one. I moved to Oak Park from New York City in August. This was the first place I went to get my usual cut. I brought a few photographs of previous cuts I really enjoyed. I was offered coffee, cookies and there is a large plasma showing movies. The woman cutting my hair told me a little bit about the movie. She then proceeded to give me surprisingly the worst or second worst haircut I have ever gotten in my life. She didn't use scissors, she used clippers. The finished cut did not look anything like the picture nor her styling. Then I got charged $30 for the cut. I wish I had asked before, that is a LOT of money for a cut like mine in my opinion. I went home and rinsed the gel out. Then I found out just how awful my haircut REALLY was. It was lopsided, there was a flat plane shaved into the side of my head. I was about to shave my head but my girlfriend took my clippers and scissors and actually salvaged the cut, but it was now very short. I would say the cut she was trying to give me was more suited for my father, or the guy who was getting the cut right before me and about 20-30 years older. Maybe that will work for you if you are 50-60, but since she was trying to do a cut she didn't know how to do my hair got butchered. If you are young I would suggest going elsewhere. read more

Ava has been cutting my hair for almost twenty years; wouldn't dream of going anywhere else, and when I do (only in an emergency, when I'm out of town for a formal event) I can tell a big difference. Simpy the best hair cut around. I moved to the area from Colorado and after many tries and many different barbers and shops I finally came to Westgate Barbers. And there I am stuck, the owner is great, she does an excellent job, does use scissors, and is entertaining. I actually have recently moved from Oak Park and I still make the drive (40 minutes) for her to cut my hair. She always makes me look good. read more

Like the last reviewer, I do wish she would take plastic, but that's ok, I just need to remember cash when I go. I wish, also, she would shampoo your hair for the price...or at least have different price-points for different services done. (cut, shampoo, style, etc). I'll start with the fact that it was a good haircut. With that in mind the price for the hair cut was a bit much. I appreciate the two gentlemen that have cut my hair (Tony and Jonathan). They were very friendly and even offered me a beer! My problem lies with the woman that was cutting hair next to me. She was talking to a guy about the mentally disabled and kept using the word "retarded." I myself find it to be a word very offensive and poor taste for a business owner to use. I hope I just arrived on an off day and this language is not often used. Still this was a few months ago and I have not returned. read more

Yes! Fine haircut and all that. What turned me off to the place was that I came in for a haircut one day and paid $32.00 for it. I knew the price, so that was not an issue. What bothered me was that the owner herself cut my hair. I handed her $40.00. Can you believe that she actually thought the change should be her tip? I kid you not! I had to ask for the change! She looked all insulted and asked: "How much do you need back"? I'm talking about THE OWNER here. Not someone working for her. read more

Nice staff, but the only issue is the price. $34 for basic trim/cut is too much, especially when you can go elsewhere for half that and get the same quality cut. Not sure what their rationale is on the price. Adjust the price to be more reasonable, and I will return. read more

Besides the fact that they only take cash then told us a different price on the phone than what we paid in the barber shop (which was really dumb because we had no add ons), they cut my husband's hair really great! It looked good; they cut it in the old fashioned way and he enjoyed the staff. We're new to the area but will probably look elsewhere for something a bit more priced accordingly for only a trim. read more

I have been looking for a new place to get my haircuts. I simply was not able to find a place that gives an awesome cut for a moderate place (being a college student and all). I got my haircut by Lisa, and she did a great job. She asked the right amount of questions to make sure I got the best cut possible. Usually when I get my hair cut, they don't say very much until they are done. The atmosphere was also great. They have a nice big screen TV that plays movies. I thought it was a nice touch because the biggest thing I hate how haircuts is how long they always seem like they take. It was a nice distraction. read more

Tony is LEGIT!!! My hair is really hard to cut correctly...different textures, grows really fast, and it grows in different directions (2 cow licks!? WTF, gene pool.) Anyway, I've tried everyone from super cuts, to old man barbers, to $70 man salons in the city. No matter where I went, I'd always have to fix it myself when I got home. No more- Tony gave me the best fade I've ever had. He spent almost an hour shaping it. Honestly I had my doubts because it was taking so long, but the results were well worth it. Normally I have to get a haircut every 2-3 weeks max to keep from looking like a clown, but Tony's fade lasted 4 weeks and I could have gone another if I had to without looking too terrible. Bonus- my wife loved it! Cut # 2 was even better than the first. I recently moved to the south burbs but will still make the trip up to Oak Park to have Tony cut my hair. read more

I really like this place! My son gets his haircut there and every time he looks like a million bucks when they're finished! I agree that their cash only policy is kind of a pain and their prices are a bit steep. BUT we always get amazing service and they are never rushed. My son doesn't require too many haircuts a year so it's totally worth it for him to go there. read more
