However, the institutional Bank of…read moreHawai'i out of Honolulu has refused to keep its ATM equipment operational in an efficient way that provides optimal service. The problem in a nutshell is that I own a business and have multiple checks to deposit via the ATM. The machine (NCR) is old, often breaks down and worse will not receive multiple checks particularly if they are of different sizes. Even when depositing less than 10 checks, the machine has typically malfunctioned by spitting out the checks and requiring me to deposit them individually. It is not only a hassle for me (I get a bank statement of each individual check deposited rather than a total; I have to take extra time to go through three different screens for each check deposited) it is a hassle for those who are now waiting in line to do their financial business. I have met with its local marketing director who essentially was congenial and polite but had no authority to resolve the problem. Apparently the higher ups are not interested in providing Puna customers with quality service. And I am told by someone in the organization that used parts have been used furthering the problem of break downs. Of course, the marketing director denied this. Furthermore, his compassionate concern for the aggravation was to tell me: I deposited multiple checks and had not problem with the machine accepting them. I have gone into Hilo to deposit checks and the ATMS in Hilo do not malfunction in the way I've described. They worked optimally: efficiently, quickly. What's more: I have been told that the Pahoa machine has the unique problem of being exposed to weather, of over-use, and people putting in checks with paper clips and staples. Seriously? I've banked for over 50 years, forty of which came after the development of ATMS. Not once (!) has a machine malfunctioned and this was with two different banking institutions. And most ATMS are not enclosed in a protected area but have some exposure to various weather conditions, and they are exposed to customers who mistakenly use paper clips and staples.

First Hawaiian Bank - Waiakea Branch

First Hawaiian Bank - Waiakea Branch

If money doesn't grow on trees, why do banks have branches?…read more I mean, I'm not complaining--in fact, I quite like that First Hawaiian Bank expanded to have more convenient branches around town in recent years! Not the least of which being their Waiakea branch, located right next to Prince Kuhio Plaza where the old Blockbuster used to be (the building was empty for a while...). Given that FHB's main branch in Hilo tends to be very busy at most times throughout the day, having another option nearby is always welcome. The Waiakea branch tends to be very convenient in my experience as well. They're rarely as busy as the main branch, always have way more than enough parking, and have tellers available to help in person as well as virtually if their on-site staff are occupied. Also, by virtue of its convenient location, you're allowed to avoid the craziness of driving downtown, which is almost reason enough by itself if ever you were on the fence about swinging by the Waiakea branch instead of its larger counterpart. With all that being said, I don't really think you can go wrong with either of the locales, but it really is nice to have more options these days. Especially once that don't really cost you anything experience-wise and even provide added conveniences. Don't hesitate to hit them up if you need to do a little banking and are in the area. I don't think you'll find any dropoff in quality.

(For comparison, when we opened up a $100 K account at Chase in California, we had 3 different managers offering us all kinds of good things, and immediately assigned a "private banker". Nothing like that with FHB.) The next day set up my on-line account, and discovered our savings had gone missing. We had no money. Immediately drove to Hilo with our receipts wanting to know what happened. Somehow, they managed to find our deposit. Should have taken my money and left right then. But gave them another chance. Then in Dec 2022, someone hacked our debit card. Ran up a bunch of charges. I was the one who discovered the fraud. (For reference, 12 years ago the same thing happened with our Chase debit. While it was happening, Chase called me to confirm the charges. When I said to stop it, they did so immediately.) Not so much with HFB. After a month, did get our money back, so we continued to bank with HFB. Then in Feb '22, mailed our yearly check to our HOA, spelling out the HOA name on the check, and envelope. Somehow, our check ended up with the Hawaii Department of Taxation. Don't know why, but they submitted it to FHB for payment. And FHB cashed the check! Without any questions! When I discovered that our HOA had not received my payment, but that Hawaii's Tax Dept had received our money, I got ahold of the bank, and asked why they gave our money to the State. They had no answer, but blamed the State for cashing the check! Then I asked what FHB would do to help us get our money back, and was told that was my responsibility. FHB committed malfeasance and misappropriation of our funds. I cannot recommend this bank to anyone. Bernard J Rhatigan
