Frome has always had a library service for as long as I've lived here. I know from history it used…read moreto be in the now Ellenbray Toys shop, and longer before that in a pre-fab hut in the Market Yard. Some years ago it moved to it's present location, a double-storey purpose built building with the River Frome running along one side and facing onto the Market Car Park. Inside, the ground floor has all the fiction and non-fiction books you could ever wish to read, nicely laid out, including many little tucked-away nooks and crannies with comfortable seating to sit and lose yourself browsing books. There is also a separate bright and breezy children's section with play-box and colourful soft cushions, an ideal environment for those early steps of reading. Large Print books cater for those with eyesight difficulties, and there is a gratifyingly good sized selection of these. There is also a DVD hire facility, with a reasonable selection of titles for hire. Computer access is available for free, but there are only a limited number of computers (and it's not unusual to find one or two out of order) so it's not always easy to get onto one. And when you do, the time is limited - and you'll need your library card to be able to access the internet. With more computers and better quicker maintenance this could be a much improved facility. Upstairs there is a large quiet and comfortable research area with all sorts of technical and archive books. A lift is available for wheelchair users to travel this one flight upwards. Back downstairs an added feature is a small Mendip District Council outlet for advice and assistance with all matters of Council Tax, benefits and other features. This is extremely useful for people who are unable to travel in person to the offices and prefer to deal face to face with a service advisor for filling in forms and gettings help and advice. Very discreet, and a good service. The main stamping in and out of books is usually done swiftly and efficiently. But the more sensitive should beware if you take books back late. Whilst most of the Assistants will tell you of the late-return fine you owe quietly, discreetly and politely, there are occasionally one or two who will announce it quite loudly (in the very open and public area) and leave you red-faced and fumbling for your purse whilst the queue builds up behind you! Of course, it is always possible to phone the library to renew over the telephone to maybe avoid this. But that's just the odd occasions over the years. The staff are usually efficient, helpful and polite and all seem to really enjoy their job. A great asset to the town, the library also hosts occasional children's storytime events and talks by authors for the adults. It is very much in the heart of the town both physically and metaphorically speaking.

Bristol's biggest library, though that doesn't mean its huge, has all you would expect. They've got…read morebanks of computers (that get filled up with students from City of Bristol college), obscure local archives, and a comprehensive fiction section. Unexpected bonuses include a wonderful room for working in upstairs, with rows of wooden desks. Silence reigns in this part of the library, and if you need somewhere quiet to get some reading done in the middle of the city, you can go here without having to buy a cup of coffee. They also have a good sheet music section, and a range of CDs and DVDs on offer - no need to go and pay at Blockbusters. A say 'in this part of the library' because its not necessarily the quietest of places. Keen on enticing the entire community, the kids section usually has a toddler screaming. I don't say this critically, libraries are better places when they're a bit lively, but bear this in mind when visiting. There's plenty to choose from here, and they have a catalogue that links up to the rest of the area, so they can order stuff in for you. If you visit for the first time remember to take along a utility bill so they can let you borrow. Bristol Central Library offers everything you'd expect and a few things you wouldn't in a friendly, convivial setting.

The downstairs houses most of the non fiction material, and also has a small cafe/eating area, where you are also allowed to eat your own food. Upstairs is the reference section and main computer hub. Make sure you book an computer from the host one or you won't be able to log in. The library is pretty large, but just accommodates the amount of people it is required to, and can get pretty busy during the day - I too have been one of those printing out CVs and clogging up the photocopier. The staff here are really friendly and accommodating - they'll help you find exactly what you need to. Don't be afraid to ask!

I recently decided that it was about time my younger brother read Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials…read more I don't own the books myself, having read them at school, so I decided I'd buy them for him to read over the summer. The same week I decided this, I came across Northern Lights in a charity shop, along with The Amber Spyglass. No middle book, but I figured that by the time he'd read the first one, I'd have found The Subtle Knife in another charity shop. This was much, much harder than I thought it'd be. Being a huge book lover, I am in charity shops all the time hunting through the books and adding to my collection, but every shop I went into had the first and last book of the trilogy, but no Subtle Knife. I don't know what it is about this book, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Finally, after 2 months, I happened to be buying something else from this stall when I saw TWO copies inside. That's how great this stall is: it magically comes up with all the books you can never find in other second hand bookshops. I also love that the general fiction isn't arranged strictly in alphabetical order, because a) it makes browsing more fun, and b) it means you read every book title rather than just homing in on the areas where your favourite authors would be.
