The West Town Pub is the closest (or maybe the only) restaurant near my Dad's place. We were here twice during my trip back to Iowa last week. The place seems popular and they certainly have the space to deal with that. I'll call the food OK, including Midwest portions and heartiness. Watching sports was a nice diversion, as were watching the only couple (besides us) that came in wearing masks. We also had the same waitress both times. My mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from a box and there was a big dry ball in them that didn't get mixed. I've been too a few horrible places but I'm pretty sure this one takes the cake. A few buddies and I decided to try this place and it was a complete waste of money. I'll start with the ambiance, as soon as we walked in we were seated and the silence was loud. No music playing and a ton of open tables. So then our waiter comes to us and as we are sitting down he goes "alright let's do this", as if we are ready to storm the beaches of Normandy. Uhhh.. excuse you that's not how you greet people you are waiting on. So immediately I was thrown off. We had a few minutes to look at our menus and the waiter looked so high taking our order I was in shock. He was speaking slowly and with attention. At this point i should have seen these red flags and left. So I order and I get the rib egg roles and the chicken alfredo. The rib egg roles came out and when I bit into it, it was like biting into a soggy tissue. You could tell this was prepared very poorly, it was cold inside, soggy, and tasted old. This definitely wasn't made fresh and I did not finish them. My chicken Alfredo comes out a bit later and wow was their zero care taken in making this. The chicken was rubbery, the noodles were obviously precooked, the sauce was put on very sloppy, everything about it was terrible. As this monstrosity of an experience is unfolding, the high waiter did not ask us how our food was, if we needed water, or if we need anything. Two bites through my main meal I put my napkin on the plate and was completely dissatisfied and angry. The funny part was our waiter asked me if I needed a box when my napkin was on the full plate. As my friends were still eating, out of no where our waiter came up too us and asked if we wanted the check. Um, does it look like we are done eating? Terrible experience, will never be back, poor food, terrible staff. Save your money. read more

Arrived at 4:45 and seated immediately. Ordered drinks and Rock N'Crab roll appetizer. The appetizer was really good! By 5:45 all of our drinks were empty and still waiting on food. No sign of any servers. When our food arrived (3 of us got wings, 1 kids chicken tender + sides of fries and coleslaw), all of the wings were completely cold. We tried to eat them anyway, but they were extremely dry and tough. The celery served with them was rotten and we were missing ranch. Kids tenders were warm and perfectly fine, as were the fries. When the waitress finally came back, I told her about the wings and she took them and walked away without a word. 20 minutes later she returned with our bill. After almost 2 hours and $93, we had to stop on the way home for some edible food. Of all the great choices in Ames, DON'T waste your time and money here. read more

This place is filthy. The inside had a sticky feeling like visiting a college bar during the daytime gives you. We are on the patio, and it was absolutely disgusting. There was garbage laying around and food--it was in desperate need of a spray wash. Imagine what the kitchen is like if that's how their dining areas look. The food was meh--mediocre at best. I wanted to give this 4 stars due to all the poor reviews on this place because it's really not that bad. I felt like this place was clean and the bartender was always there if i needed anything. Service=5 stars. I ordered a martini at the bar which was great! Also ordered dinner and got the steak Alfredo (odd combination but okay!). The food came out extremely fast! I gave this 3 stars due to a couple things. -I ordered medium done steak on the Alfredo. Came out well well done. -presentation. I got a bowl of pasta with steak on top. No veggies or anything. -overall quality: menu seemed like it had odd choices and needed revamped. I want to give this 4 stars because my meal was 15 dollars. This place conveniently off the high way and close to drop in when at tournament . The size accommodates all sizes of groups. It's your typical bar and grill - nothing too special and nothing too great to rant and rave about. We came in a large group, service was ok, most of the food was ok. I'm giving this place a lower rating because at least 6 of our 25 people had a salad of some sort that wasn't well prepared. One had chicken that wasn't all the way done, one had a huge heart of the head of lettuce within their plate, one had browned salad. So overall wasn't impressed with those dishes. I have other places I'd rather go to than WTP however it really is the only place in West Ames to get a beer in a "pub" environment. Only three local beers of draft and they don't change too much. Food is okay, but what kind of pub doesn't have some sort of nachos?! My favorite thing on this menu is chicken tender basket or the CA burger. Just okay. Service is SLOW, you will be here awhile. West Towne Pub is located in a small strip mall by a gas station. It's unassuming, but the fellas I was with told me they have great burgers. I'm definitely a burger kind of girl, so I couldn't turn down the chance to try a new burger. We were there on a Saturday night for dinner, and the parking lot was pretty empty when we first arrived. Within 30 minutes, this quickly changed, so I'd say we came in at the right time. We got the domestic bucket deal (4 domestic beers), and each one of us got a burger or sandwich. I got West Towne's new Chorizo Burger ($11.55) with a side of mashed potatoes. The chorizo burger itself was very flavorful! I liked the spicy chorizo blend within the patty. It's different than a lot of burgers I've had before. Where I made mistake was in ordering the mashed potatoes. They were bland. They were way too mushy. They were NOT how mashed potatoes should taste. I should've gone with the fries because their fries were amazing. They are beer-battered, and had ten times more flavor than their mashed potatoes. I don't know if I'd come back to West Towne Pub the next time I'm in Ames...the service lacked because our waitress had to go ask her coworkers clarification questions several times, there's definitely room for improvement when it comes to their food quality, and I've personally been to better sports bars. We got here on Sunday around 1:15. Front desk was a bit backed up but we figured no biggie. Sat on patio as it was a beautiful day. The picture of the table was not bussed for over 45 minutes. I suppose for Where I am it was OK. The french fries were cooked well done crispy. I had a Reuben sandwich because it was suggested by the owner. It too, was just okay I'm accustomed to a fat meaty sandwich this was not it could have used more meat. The meat that was on the sandwich was delicious and tender. I also think the spread should alway be on the side to allow the customer put their own spread on and not the kitchen, because it masks the flavor of the meat. It's a Saturday night and they have maybe a dozen tables busy one of the worst restaurants in Ames. We take responsibility for placing an order here after we walked in the light bulb was out above our table and the booth seating had no padding. We've been going here for several years and have always been happy with our visit. Good food and good service used to be the norm. However, after tonight's visit we won't be coming back. They have a big menu and that's nice to have that variety, but it comes at a cost in quality. I had a meal that I've had several times before - the Philly Cheesesteak. It was great once upon a time. Tonight it was served up in a dry, stale bun. The steak was stringy and tough, not at all tender. The fries were okay, but just okay. Some others were not happy with their meals. Someone had a Beef au Jus with the same crappy beef and stale bun. Two had steaks and both were tough. Overall, in our group of 8 nobody seemed to very impressed. There was a day I'd recommend this place, but that ship has sailed. Tonight was my last visit to West Towne Pub unless they improve. There are 140+ restaurants in Ames and many of them serve better food. read more

West Towne Pub is conveniently located off of Highway 30 on Mortensen Road. The food is very good, and very comparable to Wallaby's and Okoboji Grill. I'm sure most college students visit the facility "after hours" as it's the closest bar to the apartment complexes out on Mortensen. read more

We waited for 45 minutes after we ordered on a Sunday gameday but the bar was half full only. The manager is a bears fan that sits there and watches the football game the whole time instead of running the restaurant. When we asked about our food the manager was rude and defensive with his tone and told us it is average to wait 30 minutes for an order. Our table of six all ordered just boneless wings. The worst part was the food was completely cold by the time it came out. Worst experience I've ever had in Ames. Will never go here again read more

Typical college town pub/bar/eatery. Spacious with plenty of dining area, dimly lit, and walls plastered with beer posters . Our waitress was quick and organized. I travel throughout the Midwest for work all the time. I asked the front desk staff if WTP was decent or not, while staying in Ames for a few days. I was lied to, I ordered the 8oz ribeye steak sandwich medium rare and fries. It was a...listen I'm from Iowa this steak sandwich was garbage. The 1/4 inch ribeye tasted like it was ran over in the ally and what was left of it was delicately placed on regular old toasted white bread. We had out of town company and wanted to take them to a nice place for dinner. We chose West Towne Pub and I wish we had gone someplace else. We waited 10 minutes before anyone came to take a drink order, then had to wait another 15 minutes to get it served. Two of us had bottled beer, one wine and one a can of White Claw. A few minutes in she said the bartender was mixing our drinks causing a delay - what? Mixing what! It took 45 minutes longer to be served our food and everything was cold! Our guest ordered the sweet potato fries for an extra fee with her burger and they were cold, not luke warm but cold! The waitress (who was on her 3rd day only) offered to put it in the microwave for us! No thank you. That would only make it soggier. No manager came to talk to us, even though the waitress apologized. I don't think it will be my first choice ever again. This is our second visit with subpar food and service. read more

Update to my initial review: I was accused of using the "N" word by one of the bartenders after a drunk black girl got mad that I wouldn't dance (there is no dance floor) with her. She told her friend that I called her a name, her friend (also completely hammered) told the bartender that we called her a name, then he accused my friend and me of using racial slurs and became very hostile towards us. We both looked behind us to see if he was speaking to someone else. He wasn't. So after realizing he was a giant moron for believing some girl and guy that were essentially blackout drunk, he decided to give us a beer, on the house. Yay! I just moved to Ames yesterday and I didn't make it over to WTP until the next day. It was nice inside and best part, I sat by the bar and it didn't smell like spilled liquor! Coming from Iowa City where every bar has that burned out college bar smell, this was a breath of fresh air. The food was good as well. Plenty of good beers on tap and a ton of others in the cooler. The staff was friendly and attentive. Not sure why others have left such negative reviews. I will be a frequent flyer at this place.
