I have been seeing Dr. Wesner for the past 3 1/2 years after developing clinical depression due to a highly toxic work environment (a job I held for almost 19 years). After beginning treatment I was diagnosed with PTSD after witnessing a near death accident 12 years earlier, childhood abuse via whippings/beatings by my father, and a sexual assault at the age of 20 (I was drugged at a bar and have no memory until I woke up the next morning and realized what had happened the night before) for reference I was in my mid 40s when I finally saw Dr. Wesner. I was initially very reluctant to seek help (and was embarrassed to admit to myself that I needed help), but once I hit bottom I realized that I had to do something and finally came to see Dr. Wesner on the advice of a friend (who was previously a patient of Dr. Wesner's). From the very start Dr. Wesner was very open, honest, and forthright with me regarding my diagnoses and treatment options. He's an extremely good listener, and always has very thoughtful insight into the things we discuss during my sessions. During some of my more difficult episodes, he even called me at home just to check up on me and make sure that I was doing OK. That personal touch I feel is above and beyond, but is much appreciated by me to know that my doctor really does care about my well-being. I was also reluctant to use medication to manage my conditions. However, I wish I would've sought help much, much sooner. While it took a little while to find the correct medications and dosages it's almost unbelievable how different I feel these days. If how I feel now is how most people normally feel, I'm ashamed to admit that I was "sick" since I was a teenager and never sought help for how I was feeling. I would recommend Dr. Wesner without reservation to anyone who is seeking treatment for mental health condition. His office is in a convenient location in downtown Iowa City. His office manager Bonnie is a wonderful person and is always diligent about following up with appointment reminders, phone calls, and messages to Dr. Wesner. In addition, Dr. Wesner has two wonderful Labrador Retriever's (named Story and Kaye) who always greet me with kindness, sit in on all my sessions, and have a remarkable calming effect on me (and I imagine many others) during our treatment sessions. I most likely would not be here today writing this review without Dr. Wesner's help. He is a literal lifesaver. So if you are hesitating to seek treatment, please don't wait. Dr. Wesner is a board-certified psychiatrist with many, many years of experience treating all manner of patients and conditions. My wife is a patient of Dr. Wesner's, but at her request we see him together. He treats her (and really us) with great respect and care, and we think of him as the best doctor on her care team. He listens carefully to our concerns and, within the limits of his professional judgement, adjusts treatment accordingly. I highly recommend Dr. Wesner to anyone who will listen. I noticed that another reviewer complained of Dr. Wesner's "narcissism." He does talk about his own experiences in life and in the medical field, but my wife and I are deeply appreciative of that. We interpret it as showing empathy for the patient. He is demonstrating that he is not just a doctor who remains at a purely clinical level, but one who is human and can empathize with some of the difficulties and challenges that the humans he is caring for face. Dr. Wesner has been my mental health care physician for nearly 20 years. He has been tremendous in diagnosing and treating my disorder. His demeanor is very relaxing, and he provides his patients with a comprehensive treatment plan. This includes the use of therapy and counseling, paired with a vast knowledge of any appropriate medication that is needed. He is willing to change or alter the medication treatment plan, whenever the situation dictates it, in order to provide the best care possible for his patients. He even incorporates the use of therapy dogs, which I really appreciate being an animal lover myself. I hope he never retires, because I fear I would have difficulty finding a new doctor with his skills, relaxed manner, and the genuine care he exhibits for his patients. read more

I have a neurological condition called Post Chemotherapy Cognitive Impairment, resulting from a bone marrow transplant I had many years ago. The onset of chemo brain symptoms was gradual, and exponentially and adversely affected my personal, social, and professional life. This caused me increasing distress and anxiety, making daily functioning really hard. Dr. Wesner guided me through methods for addressing these symptoms, thorough interviews, suggestions, arranging for cognitive functioning tests. He is straight shooting, really hears what I am saying, and gives me excellent insights on rethinking how I had been viewing myself. I never feel rushed. I appreciate his professionalism. Fortunate to be his patients as I am on Medicare. Was able to take a canceled appointment within a week of my inquiry. Dr. Wesner takes the time to sort thru my issues so I can prioritize them. Never do I feel rushed. He has phoned me when I've left messages with Bonnie that I wonder about my meds. Genuine concern and caring from him. Bonnie, his receptionist, is awesome and also a warm, caring person. Having the friendly dogs to pet is soothing while waiting in the "dog" waiting room for my session. Dr Wesner is one of the most knowledgeable, caring physicians I have met. I moved to Iowa without having any local doctors. From the moment I met Dr Wesner he has treated me with respect and talked to me as a friend. He is very much up to date on all the latest medications.
