If you hear how much they have sacrificed for God and where…read morethey have served, you can see they really live out a life of service and love sharing the gospel to people who have been neglected. They use to live in the ghettos of Boston where there were as many funerals there as there are wedding in DC. They opened their house to the neighborhood children who often didn't have enough to eat or needed a safe place. On a side note regarding the post on Chinese New years, all the Christians I know in China and Taiwan celebrate Chinese New Years because it's a time to connect with family and friends and to share and tell them how much you love them. It's not easy being Christian in China and some of them have given up professions, suffered persecution, and are barely scrapping by, but they celebrate Chinese New Years....maybe differently from others....like with prayer and church services along with visiting family, feeding and helping the poor and witnessing to them. Chinese Christians definitely celebrate and share Christ's love during the two week national celebration!

As a campus minister, it challenged me to think about how when we are in positions of leadership we can think we are "above" normal tasks such as ushering and welcoming people at the door. However, are there ways I can live out my faith and service in doing humble tasks as the pastor of this church modeled out? Thanks District church, for helping my faith to grow from that visit!

But the National Cathedral is on par with some of our favorite cathedrals around the world! It lives up to its billing. The space is palatial and exquisite, hosting some rather famous guests over the years. The stained glass windows are extraordinary, and the high ceilings and exterior architecture are impressive. President Woodrow Wilson is buried along the south wall on the first floor of the cathedral for those, like me, who seek out presidential burial locations.

We stumbled into a Sunday service (and free parking) during a recent visit to DC and experienced a bit of the worship service with live music. Welcoming staff handed out well-produced program books to all who wandered in. The cathedral offers various tours or self-guided sightseeing, and you can even climb the bell tower. As serious as the whole facade may appear, there are winking playful elements hidden throughout, such as a Darth Vader limestone grotesque, and a stained glass window depicting a space theme. Be sure not to miss the Bishop's Garden - beside the outdoor cafe - an intimate and contemplative space with a gazebo and landscaped grounds and paths. Whether you're religious or not, it's a beautiful and meditative place to retreat to from the bustle of the outside world.

St. Columba's is an extremely welcoming, inclusive, open church. Holy moley, it's big! But it's not a mega church, or even close. It's a fairly liberal episcopalian church with an intellectual edge. But you don't need to be episcopalian, or subscribe to any particular beliefs, or be of any race, color, creed or sexual orientation, in order to participate fully here. If you like traditional services with all the trappings, this is the place. If you have kids and want a pared-down service that's strictly for kids, this is also the place. (There are tons of young families, but also plenty of singles, so you won't feel like a fish out of water if you go.) Probably the major draw for most people at St. C's is the music, which is truly phenomenal and professional quality. Chose from among a zillion choirs: boys choir, girls choir, boys and girls choir, adult choir, instrumental ensembles, several bell choirs (yours truly belongs to one of them), music theory classes, and more. The sermons are generally engaging and intellectual, two non-negotiables for me. Outside speakers are regularly brought in to discuss a wide range of issues. This past Sunday, the "Newshour"'s Ray Suarez (a member) discussed his new book, "The Holy Vote." There are tons of outreach programs, so you can feed the homeless, save the planet, mentor disadvantaged kids--name it and claim it. St. C's can be daunting to the uninitiated, but as with most things in life, you need to take the first step and join a group if you want to meet people or learn a new skill. Oh, and they have a rockin' playground.
