This isn't one of the largest zoo in Australia, but it is still a decent size so that you can spend a good amount of time wandering around. The good thing about this zoo is that it is quite close to the city, and you can actually get here on public transport, though I have discovered that the bus doesn't really run all that often, which I have to admit it a bit of a shame. Still, it is a pretty nice zoo, and they have a good collection of animals. The other thing is that I did find that it was somewhat more interactive than some of the other zoos that I have visited, and certainly it does make for a good day out.

Really niceeee place!!! Beautiful environment and lovely animals, both of these definitely prove it's a great place!

    Lots to see and do

Had on wet day but still had fun One of the best Zoo's I've been to. The safari tour is great and on a hot summers day it can kind of feel like your in Africa. Is very open format zoo More room for the animals. Zoo's that feel cramped with animals that look sad and 'trapped'. Werribee has the lots for all ages.

This Open Range Zoo has become my favourite of the Zoos Victoria location just after the first visit. The views of the herbivore bus tour is amazing. You really get to come up close and personal with giraffes, rhinos, zebras, ostriches, and many other animals. They even may walk across in front of the bus and stop the tour. The tour guides are quite knowledgeable and know the names of some of the animals as well as super interesting facts like a Rhinos horn is made out of hair! I didn't know there were different types of stripes on Zebras but now I do! Once you move on to view all the other animals, you get to see all the other animals. We were lucky to see an animal show on the Serval that showed exactly what they can do and we got to see the three lions really up close! Such an amazing view of such majestic creatures. Zoos don't normally bring the kid out in me but this one did! On top of the wonderful animal viewing there's heaps of other activities and play areas throughout the zoo, including a Meerkat enclosure next to the cafe so you can watch the Meerkats do their stuff while enjoying a lovely meal! Needless to say, I've become a zoo member and will be going back there again soon!

We decided to take the trip out to the open range zoo with friends for a different way to spend the arvo. Although it's quite pricey to get in, once in it's easy to spend a couple of hours checking out the animals in their 'natural' habitats. Due to its location, the animals have heaps of room to live, and at different times of the day you can watch the trainers feeding them up close. Its best to avoid school holidays, as lines to get on the bus tour can get long. We took the trip, and it was fun to ride around the expanse and see the rhinos, giraffes and other animals wandering around. I recommend a trip here if you're looking after kids or just up for a different way to spend the day.

I hadn't been to the Werribee Zoo since I was about six years old but I went there a couple of weekends ago with my partner. My housemates had bought me an animal encounter experience for my birthday and I got the chance to o and meet the servals at the zoo and get to pat them. We arrived at 9am expecting the drive to take longer. Unfortunately there wasn't much going on at all and the cafes and exhibits had yet to open. We walked around for an hour and a half trying to see some animals but we were only rewarded with the African Hunting Dogs and the meerkats. Towards the end we were able to see the Hippos and Lions as they were eventually released. The serval experience was amazing; the keeper was really friendly and full of information about the cats. They are beautiful animals and in the serval encounter we were able to see them climb and jump, as well as get to pat them. The staff at this zoo are amazing: they are friendly, hospitable and outgoing. I don't think there was one keeper who didn't wish us a good morning. Werribee will also be putting three male gorillas out on display in the coming weeks, so if you haven't been or it's been a while since you've had the chance - I highly recommend it.

The bus ride is the best part of visiting this zoo as you get to see the animals in their element. You also get to get up close with these animals as some approached the bus. They also have a baby hippo and lion cubs that you should definitely check out.

    The safari trip is fabulous

We were lucky enough to hear the Dingo's howl once inside the park preparing us for the sound that occasionally breaks the silence of our next destination, the Australian semi arid zone and the Red Centre. We timed our trip to include feeding kangaroos on the wallaby walk and the keeper-led talks on Cockatoos, Parrots and Koalas. Aurora the Red tailed cockatoo patiently sitting on her egg in the Cockatoo enclosure being fed by her mate Antonio was particularly sweet to see. Mo the Koala put on a show once he was offered some West Australia Eucalypt leaves known as Koala junk food. We learned that Koalas have a gestation of 35 days before moving to the pouch for 6-8 months and then finally mums back til they are weaned of Pap and left to fend for themselves. With a lifespan of 10-15 years Koalas don't mind the rain with a waterproof and double coat that keeps the rain off and cold out even high in the gum trees. Our tour guide delivered a quick synopsis on Wombats and their curious cubed poo and self defense system before we attended the conservation training show where we got up and personal with Pikelet the long nosed Potoroo and Mikah and Obsidian the flighty Bush Stone Curlews.

A trip I wouldn't mind making any time I'm visiting the area! You can of course feed the animals as you see them around the sanctuary but if you are going there, I absolutely recommend booking as many of the tours and experiences as you possibly can! From kangaroos, to wallabies, to koalas, you can't go wrong! Highlights for us included taking pictures with the Koalas and walking the Dingos! The staff is outstanding. Their love and dedication to the animals is obvious from the moment you walk in and is reaffirmed throughout the whole experience; they are truly cared for and this isn't just a tourist trap. They never attempt to force the animals to do anything they don't like and if that means you don't get your perfect shot, too bad! I really respect and appreciate that. The sanctuary isn't large but it isn't small either. The atmosphere is lovely and you are surrounded by wildlife. I would highly, highly recommend this experience to anyone who loves nature and animals!

While there is enough space for the koalas (who don't require much) and MAYBE the Kangaroos (though honestly, I think they need more)... the dingoes, singular pony (why do they have this?!!!), emus, cassowaries, reptiles, owls, kookaburras wombats, and wallabies all live in enclosures way too small. Except for some cockatoos and peacocks, the birds are kept in cages and the kookaburra was all alone. The emus and cassowaries were pacing single sides of fences, as if in distress. They also don't have staff anywhere to be seen unless they are taking someone to an additional paid experience or if they are doing one of their talks and so no one is around to ensure that visitors are following the rules and obeying the signs. We saw several people feed emus and other animals where there was a "do not give kangaroo feed" sign and also feeding directly from the containers which is not allowed and not a single person who worked there trying to stop this. Also they have a sign that says wallabies like to live alone and have multiple living together and dingoes sitting around in the kind of square footage I wouldn't even consider adequate for my dogs. I'm embarrassed to say that I came to this place and will be figuring out how to report them to the RSPCA/Vic Gov
