The architecture is quaint and the locals are nice...plenty of souvenir shops, restaurants, artsy places, etc. We arrived by train, so the station is on the other side of the lake, so you have to pay 8 euros RT to get to the town....cute boat ride.

Maybe we needed more time there to truly appreciate it. It's basically a long, narrow strip of lakeside land, perfect for taking the famous selfie. There are food stands and shops along the way, but it gets very busy with tourists. Hey, it's Austria -- just lower your expectations a bit and you'll be fine.

"Die Pietà" or "Coat of Peace" is a public art piece located in Salzburg's Kapitelplatz. It was…read morecreated by Czech painter and sculptor, Anna Chromy. The statue is also known as Cloak of Conscience and there are versions of it in other European cities. The statue is fairly small, so it could be easily missed when roaming the area. There is another public art piece called "Sphaera" at Kapitelplatz that steals this piece's thunder due to its size. The faceless figure is mysterious and dark, but also kind of scary. Not necessarily worth seeking out on its own, but it deserves a look if you are in the area.

This is a steel footbridge that was built in 1903 and has some attractive ornamentation at the ends…read moreof each span. It was built as a toll bridge originally, and the toll booth remains in place at the southwest corner of the bridge....so that is some kind of a cool trivia note for those who love historical stuff. A private association called Mozartstegverein funded and operated the toll bridge initially. The bridge became a public bridge, and tolls ceased to be collected in 1921. We walked over it a few times going from the "Old Town" area to the "newer town" area.
