Like a couple other negative reviews, I had a rather appalling experience with this firm. My case…read moreis a rather complicated one involving several torts for which I have accumulated a lot of evidence to support in terms of affidavits, video and audio reports, reports from licensed contractors, text messages and other communications. When I contacted the firm, I was asked to upload as much of my evidence as I could onto a share drive and complete an intake. The intake form could never be completed because any time I got a notification or a text, the form would reset all of the answers and the attachments to support each. During the process, the principal lawyer who I was dealing with said that I was overcommunicating to him, and then said he wanted specific answers from me and was testing me on my ability to comply being concise and clear. Some times he asked for text exchanges which I had backed up to an XML file and sent those rows since the texts were no longer on my phone. But he got angry aboht that and said he wanted only screenshots which were impossible once the texts were no longer on my phone. And then he said he would only represent me for claims that could be used against the landlords insurance only, which seems to be his strategy. And although I had provided him with significant evidence about other more serious claims for greater damages, he clearly never even looked at or considered them. And because of the volume of evidence I had uploaded to support claims that he never planned nor would ever litigate, he accused me of being high on speed. He said that to represent me, I would have to be in his "straight jacket" and focus only on the most insignificant claim that I had. Since he had not even read the other documents, he was only speculating, and when I offered to tell him my story vs his speculations, he said he didn't want to know or hear about it. I am in a current health crisis because of the situation in my tenancy and my roommate had just died that week due to what had been transpiring there, and frankly, the last thing I needed was to waste my time uploading documents that would never be read nor discussed, and then insulted with accusations of being high or mentally ill. He rudely terminated our relationship before it began with little regard for what I have been dealing with and the hours I spent jumping thru his hoops. In my opinion, he left a significant opportunity on the table, was quite unprofessional about it, and clearly has a cookie cutter strategy that involves only going after insurance claims and never taking claims to court. If I had known that up front, it would have spared me much time and a variety of unnecessary insults. If you want to seek claims outside of insurance or have a lawyer who will treat you with respect, this may not be the firm for you.

Then I spent a lot of time preparing a summary of my case and then they decide not to take on the case based on being too busy? All attorneys caseloads full?? You'd think they would've told you that in the beginning that they can't take on new cases? This has happened with a couple of other law firms as well. And they won't give an answer Why?? This is very unprofessional. I asked if they could put me on a waitlist and they said no once they've not taken the case they don't take it in the future?? So there's some ulterior motive here? Then they referred me to a few people that left their firm and formed their own firm and they did the same thing?

I had a Zoom consult with McLaughlin & Sanchez and was really impressed…read more Andres Sanchez knows San Francisco landlord-tenant law inside and out. SF regulations are layered and highly technical, but he broke everything down clearly and gave very pragmatic advice -- not just what the law says in theory, but what actually makes sense in practice. He was straightforward, thoughtful, and realistic about options and potential outcomes. I especially appreciated that he focused on practical next steps instead of overcomplicating things. It felt strategic and grounded, not alarmist. If you're dealing with a landlord-tenant issue in San Francisco and want clear, practical guidance, this firm is a solid choice.

I cannot express how grateful I am for my experience with this firm. Although my case ultimately…read morehad to move forward in a different direction, I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience with the firm, especially Attorney Toven Lim. Throughout the process, Toven was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and resourceful. What stood out to me most was the way he treated me as a person. I never felt rushed or dismissed during our conversations. He took the time to listen to me, answer my questions, and explain things clearly. Even during moments when I was frustrated and simply needed to express how I was feeling about the situation, I genuinely felt heard and understood. Legal matters take time, and the process can be difficult and frustrating, but throughout my experience with this firm, I always felt that I was in knowledgeable and capable hands. They gave me hope during an incredibly difficult time in my life, and words cannot fully express how thankful I am for the support and compassion I received. I would absolutely recommend this firm. I am genuinely grateful to Toven and the entire team for everything they did for me and my family.

I've dealt with this law firm twice in three years. The same intake specialist questioned me both…read moretimes over the phone, sometimes asking me in the interview what I thought were irrelevant questions while also conveying the impression of an authoritarian who would reject me instantly if I did not answer her questions with the requisite politeness and subservience she demanded since she balked palpably when I questioned her about the appropriateness of some of her questions. Based on her responses to my questions and the clinical way in which she asked her questions, I felt this intake specialist was going to reject my plea for help -- before the law firm had made any final determination. And on both occasions, it turned out that my intuition proved correct. On my second call to this law firm last month, the intake specialist asked in a decisively clinical and less-than-friendly manner, "What makes you call us back a second time after you had already been rejected by our firm the first time? Has anything significantly changed?" This same intake specialist, on both occasions, when it was decided the law firm would not take up my case and would not provide me with legal assistance, emailed me my rejection but gave me no reason whatsoever why my petition or inquiry was rejected. None, on either occasion. On both of my inquiries seeking legal help, I was seeking legal defense as a tenant from chronic noise nuisance by an upstairs neighbor my landlord enabled as a noise-maker and refused to warn. On both occasions, the one question the intake specialist asked me and that I had deemed totally irrelevant was: do I want to move out of my apartment? What had my desire (or no) to continue to live in my apartment have to do with seeking justice for my right to quiet enjoyment or the harassment and nuisance as a tenant I was receiving from my landlord? Without, as I've already stated, the law firm once ever stating its real reason for its decline to help me, it later became clear to me that this law firm, which pretends to represent tenants, only wants to help tenants who are willing to move out of their apartment since the firm is able to make a decent profit thereby and only with this particular strategy in mind. It judges that it cannot make money simply by doing the right thing, defending a tenant's legal right to quiet enjoyment of one's rented abode. This firm isn't interested in justice or rights for the tenant. It is interested only in its means of making a profit.

I made the mistake of not choosing Bornstein Law from the start. My sister, who works in the Civil…read moreSection of the Sheriff's Office, spoke highly of Attorney Bornstein and his team's high volume of successful eviction cases. Unfortunately, I let the negative reviews in here influence my decision and hired another attorney instead and it cost us valuable time. What immediately stood out to us was Bornstein Law's transparency. Their terms and fees are clearly listed on their website. That was a big relief after the other attorney was trying to get us to sign with their firm and start an eviction over a small issue (Bornstein Law's fees are more affordable vs the other attorney we talked to). During our consultation, we didn't have to spend a long time explaining every detail of our situation and Attorney Bornstein had already identified the issue and presented several options to resolve our tenant issue. He was direct, practical, and didn't sugarcoat anything. I can see how some people might interpret that as feeling unheard, but in our case, we appreciated his efficiency. He was also considerate enough to recommend options that would cost us less because our matter was not an eviction case. After the call, I realized why some reviews mention communication issues. At the end of our consultation, he accidentally placed us on hold, apparently thinking the call had already ended. Should we be upset about it? Maybe. But compared to finally having a clear path forward for our tenant issue, it felt like a minor mistake. We left the consultation relieved and confident about our next steps.
