This bronze statue of the 1st Duke of Wellington was the work of the Brecon born sculptor, John Evan Thomas (1810-1873). It seems that the Duke himself had absolutely no connection with Brecon but he was greatly revered by the whole country. The statue was erected in 1856, four years after Wellington's death. It's one of the few statues which show the Duke standing and not seated on a horse.
You'll find it immediately to the south-east of St Mary's Church on top of a tall stone plinth. There are public benches at the bottom where you can sit to look over the square towards many of the shops in Lion Street. read more
