This mural was commissioned in 2019 by local rapper, Big K.R.I.T., to promote his fourth album,…read more"K.R.I.T. Iz Here." K.R.I.T. selected Mississippi Gulf Coast native Michael Roy, artistically known as Birdcap, to do the project. Roy had designed some album covers for K.R.I.T. in the past. It is located on the side of the Arts Center of MS in downtown Jackson. The was one of a series of murals and in addition to be a promotion, it was a gift to the city. Part of the promotion allowed fans to take a picture of the QR code for a chance to win a trip to his album listening party in Atlanta. The project was funded mostly by K.R.I.T, with a donation from The Greater Jackson Arts Council for a scissor lift. Roy expressed that he really enjoyed doing this mural because he does not get to paint in his home state of Mississippi often. The mural depicts K.R.I.T. diving into some water to capture a crown, but there is an alligator on the other side trying to beat him to it. The race is on. Who will win? The mural has a cartoon/whimsical vibe and I like the color scheme that Roy uses. The blues and purples compliment each other very well. It is a very eye catching mural that has the words K.R.I.T Iz Here on a wall behind a walkway on the wall's second level, giving it a countersunk or 3D look. It is a nice addition to the city and blends in perfectly to the artsy area that it is located. Anyway, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, such as the Mississippi Museum of Art, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

It is starting to shows signs of rust and fading and has been vandalized on numerous occasions. The sculpture was created by Linda Trobaugh for the park's opening in 1986. Trobaugh intended the sculpture to be a reflection of the color, vitality and strength of the neighborhood that it honors. The piece has 6 steel beam panels standing vertical and lined up from front to back. Each panel has its own color going from green to red to orange to blue to orange to white. Each panel has bars arrange horizonal and vertical, in different configurations. Portions of each panel can be seen through each other. You will see a placard near the sculpture that details a bit about it and has a poem on it. The placard was added in 2018, well after the creation of the sculpture. t is an interesting piece, but has been neglected for years. If you are in the area with nothing to do, then it may be worth a visit. There is free street parking available within walking distance from the sculpture. Just be aware that the sculpture is not in the best area. It is kind of sketchy. Anyway, as with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, I was there less than 5 minutes. You may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions, such as Alamo Theater, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.

The is also a nice patio area with picnic tables, a stage and a lighted welcoming lawn where they host various events such as art exhibitions, festivals, outdoor films, musical performances, and other cultural events. As an added bonus, the garden offers free WIFI, a nice paved walkway, a small reflection pool, and has a water fountain. There is free street parking along the side of the garden and within a reasonable walking distance. There is also commercial parking lots available as well, given its close proximity to the Jackson Convention Complex and the Arts Center of Mississippi. The art in the park is amazing. It is an artists' playland and includes murals, sculptures, and interactive pieces. Some pieces you will find there include Garden Boats by Jennifer Torres, The Noodle by Fletcher Cox, Mississippi Alligator by Martha Ferris, and Mississippi Quartet by Ed McGowin. The good thing about this place is that it is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, for extended hours, even when the museum is closed. You can hang out there and it appears to not get much traffic outside of special events, so it has a peacefulness to it. I recommend checking this place out if you happen to be in the downtown Jackson area. It is very nice and well-constructed. You can easily spend a couple of hours here and be fully engaged. Ohhh, and its free. You can't beat that.

They were assisted by Students from Clausell, Lake, Pecan Park and Raines Elementary Schools. It is prominently located on the Arts Center of Mississippi's retainer wall facing Pascagoula Street. It is very long and wraps around the wall. The artists took this as an opportunity to teach kids about art and how colors mix. The mural depicts a bunch of children's head silhouettes painted in an array of bright colors. You will also see a baby crawling with its hand painted on the sidewalk and an older kid running. I really like the color usage in in the mural. It is a very attractive and attention getting. It is intended to represent the city's diversity and children of different backgrounds and cultures. It was also designed to invoke the peaceful and organic change made through day-to-day interactions with different cultures. The colors used include orange, pink, blue, green and gray, against a white background. I am a huge fan of community murals and this one is no exception. It was painted in 2020 by Visit Jackson's Creative Design Manager, Reshonda Perryman. It is on the back wall of the Old Capitol Inn and faces the front entrance of the Mississippi Civil Rights and Mississippi History Museum. It took Perryman 28 days to complete the piece. The first thing that will probably come to mind when you see the mural is the color. It is very vivid and beautiful. Perryman said "I didn't want to paint portraits in a traditional way." As for the people she selected for the mural, she said "When we came up with the idea for this mural, we wanted to focus on those pillars, so we have David Banner to represent music, Eudora Welty for literature, of course Medgar Evers for civil rights, and we have Thalia Mara for performing arts," I really like this mural. I like how Perryman used colors and the detail she put into each personality. I knew exactly who they were intended to be at first sight. There is limited free street parking on the street right in front of the mural for those that want to park and get a closer look. This mural depicts Dominick' early childhood experience, revisiting the communion of food making. Mama Rose was a local farmer and Dominick's great-grandmother. The work prompts the memory to explore the collective experience of family tradition around food. Dominick inspiration came from memories of her sitting on the kitchen floor listening to Mama Rose's stories about Farish Street District, The mural has simple color usage, primarily using black, white, orange and blue. It depicts 3 generations of women (Mama Rose, Dominick's mom and aunt, and a young Dominick herself) around a kitchen table mixing some food. Even though it has simple color usage. I still like how it is used to highlight the women and little girl. The women and girl intentionally do not have a distinct face, because Dominick wanted any viewer to have the vision to put themselves or someone they know in the mural. She said, "I left the faces blank because I wanted people to see themselves in it." The mural overlooks a vacant and overgrown field and is showing severe fading. It is a real attention grabber and I like it. This statue depicts Louis XIV riding and a horse. It is a replica of an original made Gian Lorenzo Bernini that he made for the King himself. However, the King was not happy with the final product and had Francois Girardon modify it. This is one of only 3 such known replicas. This copy was originally commissioned in as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of Pierre Le Moyne of Iberville's discovery of the mouth of the Mississippi River. It was authorized by the National Museum of the Chateaus of Versailles and the Trianon as the centerpiece of the 1998 Splendors of Versailles Exhibition presented by the Commission at the Mississippi Arts Pavilion, aka the Pavilion. Subsequently, it was gifted to the City of Jackson by the trustees of the Mississippi Museum of Art with funding provided by the Gertrude C. Ford Foundation in honor of the Mississippi Commission for International Cultural Exchange. Wow! What a gift huh? You get to see a French sculpture (well at least a replica of one) without leaving the country. The sculpture appears to be in great shape, but marble is pretty durable.
