This landmark along Knock Road welcomes you to the town of Dervock. Driving past at a decent clip, I noticed the seal and had to turn around to see what this is all about.
Yes, the sign has the seal of the President of the United States and next to it an Olympic Gold medal. "Welcome to Dervock. Ancestral Home of President William McKinley (1843-1901). Home of Olympic Gold Medallist Kennedy Kane McArthur (1881-1960)"
McKinley was the 25th POTUS and served from 1897 to 1901. He was the last president to have served in the American Civil War. Following his relection in the 1900 campaign, he was shot on September 6, 1901 and died eight days later. He was succeeded by Vice President Theodore Roosevelt. It was McKinley's immigrant ancestor David McKinley who was born here in County Antrim who came to the United States.
Kennedy Kane "Ken" McArthur competed at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, representing South Africa as he had emigrated there in 1901 at the age of 20. He won the gold for marathon.
