It took me awhile to get around to this place, but Hopfen & Malz exceeded my expectations. It is small store, but nearly every centimeter is covered with beer from all over the world. The selection is pretty good with a nice variety of ales. The service was better than usual for the city (you probably know what I mean) and the gentleman working behind the counter offered suggestions when asked. I enjoyed my experience shopping and browsing... and, let's be honest, drinking. With that said, if I could give this place 4.5 stars I would have. You are going to need to dig deep in those pockets because this place is pricey. To be fair these aren't cheap beers to import (although some of the more common beers here were still overpriced). I also wish this place had longer hours. Small complaints for those seeking good craft beers in Berlin.

This boutique carries only small, independently owned brands, including at least one collectively owned distiller that we noticed. Although we intended only to buy the gin, we were swept up by the beautiful selection and ended up with gin, amaro, absinthe and vermouth I especially love that the products are offered in a variety of sizes, which is a nice way to try new things, and in my case, to purchase as small souvenir gifts for friends, too highly recommend for those who enjoy the craftsmanship that goes into small batch production

This may be the greatest liquor store ever…read more Dr. Kochan did his studies in the anthropology of alcohol (!) and keeps a shop stocked with artisanal spirits distilled by independent producers. Boutique gins (made in Berlin!), scotches finished on strange wood (sauterne casks!?), exotic rums, even artisanal tonic water. Thomas took the time to show us (and let us taste) Monkey 47, his favorite gin, and explained the difference between "geist" (re-distilled fruit-infused neutral spirit) and "brand" (brandies made entirely from fermented fruit). He turned us on to a raspberry brandy (Brand aus Pfälzer Himbeeren) made by a family who farm raspberries in Großkarlbach that is simply sublime. You have to try it. This store is clearly Thomas's passion. I love businesses like this.
