Some friends who lived in Frankfurt for a couple of years told us it was an absolute MUST to spend a day out in the wine country where the Trocken (dry) Riesling originated. We should have spend multiple days out here. Not only is it extremely beautiful and peaceful, but the wines are all incredible! We stopped into 4 wineries for tastings throughout the day - Weingut Spreitzer was our favorite. We were directed here after a delightful tasting at Weingut Balthasar Ress. I would highly recommend you make BOTH of these wineries a high priority to visit. There was so much space in their renovated tasting room and we tried all of their dry whites. The only thing more comforting than their furniture was the people that work here. They clearly have a passion and love for what they do that shines through in the quality of their wines. Cheers!

On a visit there in 2005, I was fortunate enough to get a case of their abbey beer, which they no longer produce. It came in a wooden crate! I still have the empty bottles, which close with swing-top closures - nice! In the month of 9/11 friends were visiting Germany for a wedding, and brought home three special bottles of wine for me, from Kloster Eberbach. They even had to drive it back from Montreal to Chicago, because when their plane got back to North America, the United States was shut down for air travel! It is some really special wine, and is still in my cellar, waiting to be old enough to drink. They also have some very lovely wine glasses which are engraved with an image of the Kloster, and their name. The place is well worth a trip up from Rüdesheim, if you're traveling along the Rhine in the Rheingau region. It is right above the river, about one third of the way to Rüdesheim when coming from Wiesbaden/Mainz. There is a restaurant serving fine authentic German food, and a museum.

There's no charge for tastings - they are trying to help you find the right wine/fit - and you can purchase bottles from there. If debating at all what to try - the sparkling Riesling was one of our favorites - and totally unique. Well worth the stop - we left with several wines - highly recommend.

All of the indoor tables and outdoor tables were filled with families and dogs! I love how dogs are allowed in Germany restaurants! Wish this was the case in NYC. We placed our order, while I loved the food and the presentation. We were all taken back by how slow everything arrived. It took over 1+ hours from time of order to receiving the food. It could be perhaps the kitchen was very busy. But many of our family members were hungry. I ordered the schnitzel with white asparagus. It is white asparagus season! And for my baby the spatzle with mushroom sauce on the side. Baby loved the spatzle! And I loved my dish as well. Except the white asparagus has this heavy cream sauce which I would've liked without it. Other than the tremendously long wait for the food, it was a lovely Mother's Day with family in this brewery!

I think it took 1/2 hour for our food to arrive... may be longer. The food was good. Not outstanding. Big portion, so the 2 schnitzel filled me up and the big beverages helped wash it down. I like the big tables they offer, so you can spread out. But the service? Not so impressive.
