Took my car here to get inspected. I had bought it the day before. It is an older car in great condition with 35,000 miles on it. Wayne's told me I would need close to $2,000 in repairs to pass inspection. Took it somewhere else and paid a couple hundred dollars to fix simple repairs (gas cap replacement, new windshield wipers). The worst part was how mean and condescending the bald guy was to me. Before even looking at the car, the guy started laying into me, telling me I had bought a lemon, that the car wasn't worth $1000, that I had been scammed, etc, just based on seeing that my car was older. I had taken my car here for several years only to discover i was being overcharged. They always had said they use "premium" parts and badmouthed other mechanic shops. They overcharge bc they know most won't question. I didn't until I had to get out a small loan for some repairs they did. Other mechanics west of here have warned me and were not surprised! After writing a review regarding pricing for a car battery I was contacted by Wayne a day or two later. He mentioned that he was able to take a look at the pricing and noticed an error in his system which caused me to be overcharge. He asked me to stop by with my credit card so that he may credit me $140. I stopped by a week later and he did just that! I can appreciate when a company admits a mistake or simply just tries to honestly rectify a negative situation for a customer. I've been to Wayne's twice now. Once for a last minute flat tire which they were able to patch up super quickly and for my state inspection. I needed new tires to pass inspection and they luckily had the tires and were able to get the tires one, with alignment, and then inspect my care all in one service. I've been going here for about two years, everyone's really nice, the shop is conveniently located, but they are expensive so I have go prepare myself every time (I'm a service worker who barely scrapes by). I started to notice though, every time I bring my car in, almost twice a year, there's something kind of significant that is needed. I went in for an inspection this week and they quoted me over $1300 in repairs just to pass. My car is barely 10 years old and I keep it maintained so this seemed especially strange. I just got a new rear tire 4 months ago from a pothole incident and they told me both back tires were cracked and needed replacing. I don't even drive my car that much. I decided to take it to get another opinion at a mechanic my best friend swears by in south Philly and has been going to for years. Just to get my car back from Wayne's it cost $130 dollars. They did an oil change I didn't need or consent to (specially when I came in the guy said "inspect and an oil change?" And I said "no just an inspection"). I showed the other mechanic the itemized list of repairs Wayne's had emailed me and this shop did a full safety inspection for free in addition to what was needed for the state inspection. They found literally **NOTHING** wrong with my car. They broke down every single thing they checked. Not a single issue Wayne's listed needed addressing (just one example -- my 'bad tires' were only at about 20% wear). The south Philly shop did all that for 52$. I feel really sad to think Wayne's probably had been ripping me off this whole time I'd been going there. And seeing all these yelp reviews suddenly makes sense. After moving to the area, two neighbors mentioned they had used Wayne's, which was extremely convenient as it was only a few blocks away. I needed my brakes done before heading out for the thanksgiving holiday and they were able to fit me in the day before thanksgiving. I was excited to have a worry-free car before I hit the road. That is not what I got. Brake work turned into a quote for well over $3000. I was told I needed new rear struts and new tires because the suspension was wearing them down and they could "blow at any time." It was a safety issue they said. Over and over. Safety. When I questioned the quote, Mike rolled his eyes at me and told me he's been doing this for years. His tone was condescending and I felt gaslit into a corner. "Have you noticed a low roar when driving on the highway? Do you see these grey lines on the tires from where it's rubbing?" The answers were no but I was set to leave on a long trip the next day and I had to make a call. I chose to do everything but the struts, knocking the bill down by a grand but still blowing up my credit card debt regardless. Because safety, right? I drove around the block after picking it up and while there was still some squeaking, I chalked it up to recent work. It wasn't until I was on the freeway headed out for the holiday that I saw my hood flapping. They had neglected to check the latch. I pulled over but couldn't get it closed and it was a holiday so no one was open. I rigged a system to keep it shut during the drive and took it to a local shop once I arrived. They cleaned some gunk out that was preventing the latch from engaging and closed it no problem. No charge. When I got back to Philly I sent Wayne's an email describing my experience complete with pictures. I requested an email response so as to maintain records and so as not to have to have a phone discussion with Mike - I try to avoid gaslit conversations with folks steeped in toxic masculinity. Of course I received a phone message in response. From Mike. No direct apology or responsibility taken. This happened three times before I gave up and called it a loss. Since this time, I've taken my Subaru into the Subaru service station twice for full inspections. Still no strut work needed. Probably didn't need those tires either. I've since found out that the two folks who had suggested Wayne's also had a great deal of extra work recommended - for safety, of course. So, if you want to be conned into expensive and unnecessary work while being gaslit into thinking they care about your safety even while they literally leave your car in a condition that could kill you, go to Wayne's read more

Despite its name, Wayne's Garage is actually run by Mike. Mike is rude and unprofessional, and he tried to upsell me on unnecessary repairs. I made an appointment for 9am to have my battery, tires, and oil checked. When I arrived on time, Mike told me to wait until he finished working on other cars. He couldn't give me an estimate of how long that would take, even though I had made an appointment. While I was waiting, I overheard Mike swearing profusely. His temper was frightening. After a while, I decided to leave and come back later. Mike blamed me for not telling him sooner, and said that he had already moved my car into the garage and stopped working on the other cars. He made me feel like I was a nuisance and didn't deserve his service. Before I left, Mike tried to convince me to have my alternator, tires, battery, and air filter replaced. He said that these parts were all broken, even though the battery was actually in good condition. I said I cannot afford $2000 for all of these, he pointed to my MacBook Pro and asked how I could afford that, even though it was a work computer. I felt violated and harassed by Mike. I finally agreed to have my oil changed, but the total cost was $166, including a $50 checking fee. I took my car to Pep Boys in the afternoon for a second opinion. Pep Boys told me that only the battery needed to be replaced, and that everything else was fine. The checking fee at Pep Boys was only $19. I believe that Wayne's Garage tried to trick me into paying for unnecessary repairs. I do not recommend this auto repair shop to anyone. read more

This is my favorite mechanic I have ever had. I'm an Uber driver, and used to bring my Honda Accord to the dealerships for service. But that did not work. Dealership used sub-par parts, and only warrantiied them for 6 months. Wayne's Garage has only 3 well seasoned mechanics, uses Honda parts or OEM parts and gives you a full year warranty. I was immediately met with laughter from the person at the front desk, as they questioned my understanding of cars and assumed that I didn't know what I was talking about, not realizing that I was a diesel mechanic in the military for 7 years. At one point, after continuing to question how I knew what work needed to be done to my car, he mockingly said "why don't you just do it yourself then." My daughter was in Philadelphia doing some work for a local theater when an engine light came on in her car. She took it into Wayne's Garage to have it diagnosed. She would be traveling back to Arkansas soon so it was imperative that she get this problem addressed. The technician stated on the bill that the DTC returned a code for a bad battery sensor and that Chevrolet had a recall on this and they would fix it for free. It was a minor issue and would cause no harm to keep driving the car it until it could get fixed. They gave her a deal and charged her a little over $100 and sent her on her way feeling good that her car was okay. She felt good about it. She scheduled an appointment with a Chevrolet dealer in Philadelphia but after they rescheduled and 4 days waiting they were unable to get her car in. They did state that they had never heard of a recall for a battery sensor. The time had come to return to Arkansas. The car was running okay and she was assured the bad battery sensor would do no harm to her car. Thankfully, she arrived home safely. After returning I plugged up my code reader and surprise not a battery sensor. The only code indicated a communication problem with one of the camshaft position sensors. A quick look under the hood identified the problem. A rodent had chewed the wires off of the connector to the sensor. It was completely disconnected. It is a fairly serious problem. If the problem were as Wayne's Garage had stated the Start/Stop features of the car would have stopped working. The car would not automatically shut off the engine if the computer could not sense the battery. It makes sense as you might be in a dangerous situation when the engine shuts off and not be able to restart. My daughter stated that this feature never stopped working. I also verified that it was still working. How could it have ever been a bad battery sensor? Did Wayne's Garage make a mistake or did they make a quick $100 for doing nothing for an out of state girl they would never see again? You decide. I know what her dad thinks. read more

This time the headliner is smudged all over after an oil and filter change. Small things, I know. I just can't imagine how they could get anything right. Brakes, tires... DONT COME HERE...SCAMMED!! So I had a 2014 Nissan Versa that was having a transmission issue. Both my husband and I agreed that it seemed like a transmission issue and took it to WAYNE'S garage and told them that we thought it was a transmission issue. He calls back a later and says its NOT a transmission issue but that the spark plugs and belt had to be replaced. $2000. Since I knew this car was older and I was starting a new job the very next week that required me to drive an hour each way, my husband and I decided to bite the bullet, trusting them that it wasn't the transmission and paid the $2,000 thinking we just had to make it last long enough for us to get another car. Trusting that the issue was resolved, a week later we drove across state lines to attend a family event. 30 mins into the drive the same issue presented itself again. so we called them and told them the issue. They said to bring it back in and offered to take another look at it. Sure enough, this time they said it was in fact the transmission...$6,000. They then started to offer different "deals" left and right knowing they were caught, but the best thing they had to offer was not charging us for the second diagnostic, $100 something dollars. We continued to be nice with them, but expressed our dismay that if we had known about the transmission in the first place, that we would have known that the car was not salvageable and started looking for a car right away. The OWNER, WAYNE, said that we were right and offered us about $1,000 refund for the original $2,000 we spent, but that he had to talk to his mechanic first and to come back first thing tomorrow. We did exactly that and he was conveniently gone for a family issue and left us with only the mechanic, mike. Mike said the other stuff needed replacing and that we would have had to pay for it anyways at any other place. But the issue was that had we had known it was the transmission from the start, we wouldn't have paid the initial $2,000. He said that no refund was possible. We told him about what WAYNE, THE OWNER had told us just the day before. He was very combative, argumentative and would not even hear us out, yelling at us that the work he did was necessary. When we expressed that we would wait to talk to Wayne again, he said that they had already talked and come to a "agreement" that we didn't deserve any refund, and that ultimately any decision came down to HIS, MIKES, word. I said that didn't make sense since the place is called WAYNES garage and that the OWNER, WAYNE, gave us a completely different story. If it ultimately came down to his word and HE was the business owner as he claimed, then it should be called MIKES garage, NOT Wayne's garage. I still wanted my $100 refund though for the diagnostic fee and decided to end things there. We got scammed. Mike has a nice smile and is friendly on the outside, but is another sleezzy car mechanic underneath just trying to get a buck outta anyone he sees vulnerable. I ended up with no car for work and had to postpone my start date and out a couple thousand bucks that I coulda spent on getting another car. Don't come here, either Wayne is a major push over, or he lets Mike run the show. I would advise anyone with a Lexus, BMW, Jaguar or any luxury car to avoid this shop at all cost. They don't have qualified technicians there so they will take your car and contract it out to another auto shop. I took my Lexus 400rx hybrid there because my check engine light was on. After they put in a new engine in I went to pick it up and on the way home the car broke down and caught fire. I Google searched a VW repair shop near me. Wayne's was listed. My engine light was on and required diagnostics. Like every repair or spare parts I've ever needed for this car (Touareg VR6 Executive), I knew this would be costly. I was hesitant to take it anywhere else but to a VW Dealer, but I didn't necessarily want to pay dealer prices. When I told this to Wayne, he assured me that they can be a bit more expensive then other garages, but less then the dealers. He told me that being a certified AAA garage, they are required to use only high-end/original replacement parts, and nothing from those "big box' auto parts stores. That was what sold me. I was able to park my car and drop off the key in a lock box the night before my scheduled appointment. By 8:30 am, they called me to confirm repair price, and explained the process. By 3:00, the car was ready. The check engine light was off, and the car drives like new. I recommend this garage and will definitely be back. read more

I was referred this place from my boyfriend who also got his car repairs here and he trusts the owner a lot. It's nice because you can reserve an online appointment on their website which made it easy to plan when to drop off the car. It is in the perfect location if you are a student and live in university city/west Philly because you can drop off the car and walk home. They contact you before they do anything to confirm the services and the estimated costs. They will also email you the estimated invoice which I really appreciated looking at before confirming the service. I also appreciate their quick response time and how fast they can service the car. I sent the car in at 7:30am, got a call back by 10am, got it fixed by 1:30pm. The owner seems very straightforward as well. I took my used manual car there for an inspection and general check up, it was costly because it was a 16 year old car but prices were reasonable and fair. The only issue I had is that after a week of driving, the car made some noise in the wheels and I had to take it in again for another check up. They tightened some screws in the back wheel and didn't charge me for it so that was nice. The problem was just some lose screws but I am glad they fixed it free of charge. Now there are no problems with my car and I am very pleased with their services and will be taking my car back here in the future! read more

Have to update my review because I brought my car in to other auto shops and had some puzzling results. This shop (Wayne's) quoted me over $1500 for an alternator, serpentine belt, and labor, saying that it all needed replaced before it went out on me while I was driving. Based on other reviews, I was wondering if this was true since it looks like this place slaps on extra services when they're not needed. I drove down to Atlanta and back for a weekend and the car didn't do anything funky, but the battery sometimes didn't turn on once I returned, so when I brought it to another shop, I expected the worst. After a full check up, they said that the battery only needed a little tightening. I'm not sure what the reason was for the high quote. read more

They stayed in touch with me all afternoon, let me know what my car needed, and by 5pm my car was safe and ready to go. They couldn't have been nicer! Truly a ripoff. My 2010 Nissan Versa wouldn't start and Wayne's is the closest garage in my neighborhood, so I pushed it there. They charged me a diagnostic fee to look at it - sure, fine, that makes sense. They called me back later in the day to tell me that they ran all of these tests, this that and the third, but nothing was coming up conclusive. They charged me another hundred bucks to look at it more closely, and came back to me with like $800 worth of repairs: premium oil change, new spark plugs, power washing the fuel injectors? Give me a break! Totally bogus. I towed my car to another garage in Philly and they diagnosed the problem immediately - I needed a new battery and an oil change. 30 minutes later my car was fine. I understand that every garage needs to make a profit, but trying to fleece a person for a million unnecessary repairs is gross. I can't respect it, I can't respect Wayne's. 1 star because they were nice enough people, and pushed my car across the street into the garage. read more

Went in for a routine oil change and inspection, and mentioned a new sound that the car was making. A couple weeks after the service was completed, I noticed that one of the windshield washer spray nozzles was blocked. I found a plastic part labeled "alternator belt cover". Popped the hood, and replaced the belt cover. I figured anyone can make a mistake, but after reading all the other negative reviews, I'm now looking for a new mechanic. read more

They overcharge despite stating on their website that they are a neighborhood alternative to the "high cost" garages. They charged 4x the cost of the part based on Advanced Auto list for the part they replaced and an hour of labor for the 15-30 minute repair. I've been a customer for a few years and went in for a fix / inspection a week ago; I spent $666. This week I came in and explained how my car stalled out on a hill and rolled back into a ditch. Though there were no exterior issues with the car, I noticed my fuel economy was very low. Shortly after, my check engine light went on and I scheduled a service. The night before my service my car's tank was a 1/4 full and was on E by the morning though I did not drive it anywhere. When I arrived and explained my situation I was told that I should just "fill it up with gas and ride it out, and I don't know what fuel economy would have to do with stalling out on a hill." Just to check out the car would be $180. I understand being a smaller business, and how the symptoms my car were exhibiting can be mysterious, but I felt this response was patronizing and did not validate the scary accident I was just in that could have been FAR worse. I decided to go somewhere else. After I filled my tank, my fuel economy was still terrible and the check engine light was still on for several days until I took it to another place. Update May 2012: Wayne's Garage has changed hands; Wayne retired. The new owner, Joe, is untested at this point. I took my car in for an oil change and he called to tell me that I needed a $500 brake job. I'll get a second opinion just to be on the safe side. ****************************** Just tried this place for the first time, in my ongoing search for an honest and competent auto repair place in Philadelphia. This one was recommended to me by a few people who have been going to Wayne's for years. I called to say that my car needed an oil change and also an unofficial inspection since I'm getting ready to take a 600 mile road trip. Wayne said he'd just had a cancellation, so if I brought it in in the next couple of hours, they could handle it. They changed the oil, replaced the oil and air filters and windshield wipers, checked and filled fluids, inflated the tires to the proper pressure (yo Obama), checked the brakes, etc. I had mentioned that the engine light went on just before I brought the car in and they said they'd look at it. They charged me $150 (not cheap) but didn't do what every other place has done, which is trump up some other massively expensive work. They were done within 3 hours, and the car is good. They were friendly, nonsexist, racially and chronologically diverse, and obviously knowledgeable as well as articulate. The shop is clean and well-organized. They were just as my friends had described. I'll be going back. Wayne's, by the way, is tucked into the middle of a residential street, right near a Sunoco station and next to a great bakery / takeout place (see "Breadline" for review). It's right near the Baltimore Avenue 45th St. Trolley stop, so you can drop off your car and hop on a trolley: very convenient. read more
