This was our first time at Waybacks and we give it a 2 thumbs up. It was just a quick stop while traveling. We each had a basic Single Cheese burger. You pick your cheese and any condiments you want. One thing we find at A LOT of burger places is lack of seasoning. That was not the case here. They were so tasty! And great fries! The people working were so helpful and friendly. They had a kiosk to place an order but a worker walked up and said he could take our order if we preferred. I'm glad he asked because being a new place it was very helpful. Saw a sign for this place on the highway and never heard of it before so, I had to give it a try. The restaurant is connected to the Mobil gas station. The service was very fast since there wasn't a lot of people. I ordered a "create your own" burger and got the crispy chicken sandwich with Cajun tater tots. The downside to the sandwich was that it was a thin layer of chicken patty so you'll most likely just be eating the bread of the chicken. Don't let the size fool of the chicken patty fool you. I will say that the sauces, both the wayback gold and Cajun sauces, were an excellent combo on the sandwich. For early lunch I stopped by here on Sunday after finishing camping in the Panoche Hills. I ordered the double bacon cheeseburger ($8.49 pre-tax) and a full order of cajun tater tots ($3.99 pre-tax). The burger itself seemed like a standard double bacon cheeseburger. The patty came medium-well (not that I asked for a specific preparation). The burger itself came with ketchup, mustard, pickles, lettuce, and tomato; I opted out of the mustard. I have no complaints about this burger; it tasted like a decent double bacon cheeseburger w/o any issues. The full order of tater tots looked like a veritable mountain of fried potato, which to me overrides the relative sparseness of the cajun seasoning. The seasoning seemed just sufficient enough to differentiate it from standard tater tots, but only just. In any setting, Wayback would provide a decent, if conventional burger offering worthy of 4 stars. Having it off the I-5 made my return from camping all that much more enjoyable. read more

We just had to check our this famed burger joint along the 5 to see what all the hype is about. How, after all, could a fast food stop garner such fervent reviews?? Who is Shoaib, the seemingly indefatigable manager who runs the store and engages with the Yelp community with all the attention and precision of a NASA flight crew member?? We just had to find out. A previous review (shoutout to Jaylena P.) enticed us to try the Double Bacon burger (unfortunately not named The Jolt at this point but Shoaib, if you're reading this, know that I 100% support the name change). True to description, it was delicious and the extra cost of the bacon was definitely worth it. We got the meal and upgraded the drink to a shake. The fries were great -- not oily but still crispy enough. As far as I can see, the only negative aspect noted about Wayback Burgers is one reviewer experiencing a long wait time. For our visit, we put in our order at 11:59am, received our milkshake at 12:05pm, and our meal was ready by 12:12pm. A very respectable delivery time given the lunch rush they were experiencing. Our cashier, Jacquline, was great and helped us navigate the thornier decisions of life (what milkshake to get? What side to order?) Overall great experience and will definitely become a regular stop on our trips down to LA. read more

Wow, what an unexpected road trip treat! We were headed back to So Cal after a bomb cyclone upended our coastal Cali adventure, when we stopped for some food and saw Wayback Burgers. We hadn't heard of them before but decided to give it a try--we were not disappointed! The cost was a bit higher than McDonalds, but the quality was exponentially better! The burgers were made with extremely fresh tasting, hand formed burger patties, which basically melted in your mouth after you bite in. All of the veggies were super fresh and crisp, they were super refreshing! The cleanliness of the restaurant was way above par for a roadside gas station, which is a total plus. At the end of the day, you are paying a bit more, but you're eating food that doesn't make you feel gross, instead it energizes you for the rest of your journey. This was my first visit to a Wayback, and I'm hoping my experience wasn't the usual. We arrived at a busy time for this location, off of Hwy 5 South. There was a long line, which we didn't mind. This location has 4 stars on Yelp. Must be good. Then I realized the reason for the long line: there were only two people working, who had to handle orders, the register, cleaning AND cooking. So you can imagine these two poor people were swamped. I imagine they also couldn't do everything they were expected to, if they were to serve all these people. Which explained the dirty tables. They had individually wrapped cutlery, but I cringed to see the spoons weren't actually individually wrapped, and people had obviously had their hands in the pile. I really hope the horrible state of the restroom, which didn't have soap, was the responsibility of the attached store and not the restaurant (although that would have been the closest restroom), but even so... I feel badly for the two people who had to try and keep all of this restaurant's functions going by themselves. read more

Best burgers along I-5. We travel regularly between the Bay Area and So Cal. We usually just fly past Firebaugh and make stops at major, well-known exits along I-5. On this particular trip, the kids started whining about making a food stop. The next exit was Panoche Rd, Exit 368. I don't think we ever exited here before, but I'm glad that I did this time. I didn't want the usual fast food and saw this Wayback Burgers place and thought we'd give them a try. The burgers were great. The milkshakes are made with real ice cream, not squirt out of a machine like the fast food joints. Why only 4 stars? Sticker shock. It must be because they are along the freeway, but a regular hamburger is $6.99. Milkshakes are $5.99. We got 5 sandwiches, 3 shakes, and 1 order of fries for $73. Will we go back? (Wayback?) Well, yes. They are great burgers. However, next time there will be no milkshakes. I see that this is a chain with a couple of locations in the Bay Area. I'll have to check those out! read more

This is a gem on the 5! I've been a few times and I've gotten their "craft your own" burger. The bun is soft and everything blends together very well. The fries could use more crispiness in my opinion but their onion rings are good, fresh and crispy. The Mac and cheese bites are a delicious surprise. Everytime I go in, staff is friendly and food does not disappoint. I would love to try their milkshakes but I know that food coma would hit me when I get back on the interstate. When driving to Los Angeles we either stop and In N Out or nothing at all. There have been times when I wanted a healthier option that a burger just can't deliver on. Unless you stop at Andersons Pea House your options are pretty much nil. Allow me to introduce you to Wayback Burgers. We split the Double Bacon burger. The first bite jolted me! I was definitely not prepared for the deliciousness of this burger. It was juicy, cheesy and spicy. The bacon added a nice crunch. I usually ask to hold the onions but forgot in this case, even with grilled onions I gobbled up the whole thing. Regretting having split it in half. The French fries were just as good, they held their crisp texture and did not taste pre-frozen or cooked in old oil. This particular location has been around for 4 years. Don't let the "gas station food-stop" turn you off. It used to be a Subway location and the staff do a great job of keeping it tidy. If you want something a little lighter check our their chicken and salad options. Oh! On the flip side, if you want a cheat meal, grab one of the house-made (not machine mixes) milkshakes. Following a pleasant car buying experience in Thousand Oaks (reference my review for Infiniti of Thousand Oaks), my wife and I were dreading the five and a half hour drive to Sacramento. After three hours of driving, we figured that we should pull over and feed our roaring bellies. Being that we are not familiar with the little cities encompassing Fresno, we decided to use our always-so-handy Yelp app to explore our options. Because we didn't want to settle for the traditional road trip options (Carl's Jr., Mc Donald's, Taco Bell, and Arby's), we did a search for nearby restaurants. Our search results pointed us to a highly-rated burger joint called Wayback Burgers (at the time I didn't realize that this is actually a chain that also has locations in the Sacramento area). When the GPS announced that we had arrived (the restaurant is connected to a Shell gas station), I was a bit hesitant to try this place out. In the past I have not had the best experiences with restaurants connected to gas stations. However, we were both hungry and there weren't many other desirable options. When we entered, we noticed the very clean dining area with two large screen televisions hanging in each corner. My opted for a custom made Bacon Blue Wayback Classic, and I opted for the Wayback Cod sandwich (we also ordered two sides of their loaded fries with Franks RedHot sauce). We were pleased with both of our burgers/sandwiches; however, we were both disappointed with the loaded fries. The quality of their fries mirrored those that you would find in the frozen section at your local supermarket. Also, the "Franks Redhot" sauce seemed like a watered down (not remotely hot nor spicy) version of the Franks Redhot that we use at home. Yet, the overall quality of the meal + the friendly employees made for a fulfilling experience. But this long stretch needs more food options (other than normal fast food chains)and thank goodness they brought us Wayback burgers. I will say, the burgers were all good although expensive ($9) - kids liked the "Cheesey" and I had one with BBQ and an onion ring. The fries were undercooked though (I'd ask for them extra crispy if I came again). I'm not sad I tried something new, but for the cost and the quality, In-N-Out is the gold standard for a reason. If you find yourself here or just need something different for a change, you'll be ok (if you get the fries well done, or maybe just get tots). Just be prepared for the sticker shock when you get the receipt. If not, I'd probably pass. Stopped in while traveling along I-5 for lunch. I was a bit shocked by the menu prices, I thought I was still in San Jose for a moment. I had the wayback double burger with fries and a drink. Total was just over $15. The iced tea was very watered down out front so I asked if they had tea in the back. I was told no, and then informed them of the problem. I was then told that they don't have time to make iced tea. I asked for a refund for my drink because I didn't want anything else and was going to just drink water instead. I was refunded within a few minutes. The burger I had was tasty and juicy, but under seasoned for me. The fries were crisp, but lacked seasoning. The water had a prominent taste of chlorine, which you sometimes get at some establishments. If I had to eat here again, I would (this stretch of the interstate is pretty desolate). All of these items were excellent and worth the calorie splurge! The wait was longer than I would have liked. And as luck would have it, a huge tour bus full of guys pulled in right as I did!
