For a high end burger at what appeared to be a gas station this is your place. Best burger on my California trip..hands down!

The onion rings were good as were the spicy cheese curds. The burgers were just okay. Neither of us tasted any of the sauce on them. I left thinking that I'd go to Taco Bell next time. The online ordering did not work at all and did not list all of the menu items. Even in the restaurant I had to ask if they had spicy cheese curds because only the regular cheese curds were on the menu. I had seen the spicy ones listed on the corporate website. $50 for 2 people. $31 bucks for a single burger, one plain double and a small tots?! Way over priced! We both could've have steaks at Outback for that. The tables were all dirty so I had to ask the girl to wipe one down. No ketchup in the dispenser. Condiments Completely empty at lunchtime. The computer screen was too difficult and unreliable so everyone in line ordered in person. I gave two stars cause although the burger was small, it was tasty and I like a thin burger. We had 3meals. Two were incorrect. For example, we didn't ask for mustard on the chicken sandwich nor the hotdog but both came with mustard. I asked for a jalapeños and grilled onions and I didn't get either. The Chicken and onion rings were cold even though we had to wait when we arrived. The food was awful and overpriced. We recently made a stop to use the electric chargers to charge our car and was happy to see a burger spot to have lunch! We ordered an Oreo milk shake, a regular cheeseburger and a cheesy burger. The wait seemed to be a little bit longer for a burger spot than what I was used to and it didn't seem to be busy with diners, but when the food came out everything tasted good and fresh! We enjoyed our meal as there was plenty to seating and TV's around the restaurant to watch. This was a nice change from the typical fast food drive through in our road trips. Excellent burger spot on the way to LA! Perfectly made. the grilled chicken sandwich was very good too. Fresh made to order. Cookies and cream milkshakes were handmade and blended perfectly. The automated ordering system allows them to focus on prepping the food. I did not expect this to be soooo good! I have been wanting to try a "Wayback Burger " for a while and finally drove up there for take out. Location: Easy to find . 5 stars for service . 4 stars for flavor. 5 stars for quality of ingredients given everything tasted fresh. My taste buds are having mixed emotions . Flavor: I guess it depends on wether or not you add salt to your food. Beef patty could use a lil more salt nonetheless its best to be healthy and stay away from salt shaker . Ha ... but ... a tiny sprinkle of salt would have been perfect over beef paty. My order : - Chili Cheese Fries- I give them a 6/10 ... to many tomatoes in sauce for my liking... - Classic Burgers without add ons : I wish I had read description and would have asked not to add mustard... too mustardy for me :( and not enough chopped onions - burger bun was soft and tasty! -Hotdog: added mushrooms and would have been fine without them. Added sliced jalapeños and grilled onions and next time I will make sure to ask for extra onions. Hotdogs had no sauce... No fast-casual food is worth a 40-minute wait. A pit stop by the freeway turn into almost an hour ordeal is just outrageous. We were here during a Sunday lunch hour, they only had 2 staffs manning the kitchen, while foregoing cashiers and opting to have only one touchscreen ordering system, which would only take card and do not spit out receipts no matter how fast to you clicked on it. Considering how many seats there are in the place, it's simply unrealistic to handle the volume. read more

Sunday, 10/09/2022 - Stopped by Mobile to get gas and saw Wayback Burgers right next to it. The restaurant is connected to Mobile gas. So we decided to give Wayback Burgers a try. Address is 46365 West Panoche Road, Firebaugh, CA 93622. Upon arrival: 1) it felt like any fast food restaurants. 2) staff didn't smile nor talk. They seemed to just want to hurry, get your orders in, get you out of the way, here's your food, thank you. Lol. 3) restaurant looked clean. Bathroom is in the Mobile section. Well stocked bathroom. Needed a little cleaning. Wasn't too bad. 4) We got the Wayback Classic burgers. One is with the bun, 2 patty, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, chopped raw onion, ketchup and mustard. The other is the same except its worth lettuce wrap and no raw onion. Both tasted..... just okay. It's.... meh. Not bad. Not good. They cost $8.99 each. 5) we got the kids chicken tenders for $8.49. Two piece of tenders with fries. Little one liked it. 6) our burgers didn't take too long to come out. 7) the water here had a weird after taste. Not like well water. But an odd taste. Not sure how to describe it. I didn't like the water. Cons: 1) I think with 2 meat patties and the inside fixings, they could have at least use double lettuce on each side of patties. With one thin lettuce on each side, it was hard to hold onto. Lettuce started to break apart as I bit into my burger. Plus it was dripping everywhere. 2) would have been nice if they put a paper wrap around the lettuce wrap classic burger to hold it in place. Conclusion: This location was clean. The burgers weren't too bad. But something I'd not come back for. Staff could have served their patrons with a little greeting and smile. Maybe they just didn't do it to us. Lol. Who knows. Having the worse stomach ache and vomiting just within a few hours after consuming a burger and fries from this place. I had no other food through out the day nor do I ever have stomach problems. Ordered take out 15 minutes before closing. Wouldn't eat here again. Horrible mistake rather have just starved if I knew I was going to get sick from here. Not as sanitary because lady making burger was rushing and handed me condiments and touched the fridge where the condiments were stored and went right back to touching the burger without cleaning hands who knows where else and what else she's been touching while making burgers.0/10 0 stars if I can. read more

So after a great day on BLM land the boys suggested we stop by Way Back burgers. Did someone say burgers? I'm in! The inside has lots of cool old photos, tv's, and plenty of bench seating. The menu has something for everyone, that is if you like your burgers "and I do" They have hand made milkshakes, fried pickles, tater tot's, regular fries and yummy burgers galore. I ordered the fried pickles as the pricked my curiosity, Tater Tots, a fountain drink, and a double bacon cheeseburger. I thought that the fried pickles were on the "way" to salty side, but besides that the flavor was good" 2 stars. The Taters were yumalishous! Lightly golden brown and the oil tasted fresh. 5 stars. Now for the best part... the burger... 2 patties with cheesy goodness melted all over them. Bacon, bacon, and more yummy BACON!! Lettuce, pickles, and a Beautiful slice of tomato on a soft burger bun 4 stars. Overall the establishment, atmosphere, employees, and the food rang in on my chart at a solid 4 out of 5. What a find on the I5! This is a fast food place worth the stop. Wayback goes way beyond the regular fast food options with customizable burgers - choose your bun and toppings! - and chicken sandwiches - grilled or fried. The milkshakes are also nice and thick. It may not look like much from the outside, but this is definitely my go-to place to stop for food if I'm hungry in the middle of a drive up and down California. read more

Stopped in at Wayback Burgers for a quick bite before getting back on the freeway. Came in and the line was to the door. It took a bit of a wait, 30 min, to get to the front to order. Once at the register we noticed a posting apologizing for the wait because they were short staffed that day. It seams to be 2 employees working the register and the food prep. Our order was taken and they got to work. It seams a bit overwhelming with the number of customers and only 2 people triying to get it done. The two girls really worked hard and did their best under the circumstances. Burgers were really good and tasted like fresh ingredients. Ordered the bacon cheeseburgers and they came with lettuce tomato, onions, cheese, bacon, and mayo, mustard. also got the cajun tater tots which were good and the onion rings, they were ok. In my opinion if the onion rings were in the fryer a bit longer they would have been delicious. The milk shakes are advertised as handspun with real ice cream. The shake itself was really good, however I ordered the coffee flavored one and it daily tasted like chocolate. No worries, I understand and saw how busy it was and the 2 employees were really trying to get everyones order prepared as quick as possible. Will stop here again in the future when I'm in the area. A mixed bag. The veggie burger was ok but the chicken Caesar salad was truly appalling. The "grilled chicken" in the Caesar looked like it was manufactured from Soylent Green. The freshness of the burger, lettuce and buns is 5 star worthy. I think it's a decent burger in terms of quality ingredients. I also think a classic burger needs mayonnaise and sliced onions. The diced onions, ketchup and mustard just don't do it for me. I also feel like I'm not satisfied as the burger looks bigger in their photos. I finished my burger and I'm still hungry. Tried the sweet bacon burger and it was so good. The bread was soft, meat was juicy and combined with the candied bacon and coarse grain mustard, it was a great experience. I drive along the interstate as a truck driver regularly and will definitely keep coming back to try the rest of the menu. read more

Best fast food burger! The guac burger was BOMBBBBB. I was pleasantly surprised. My husband got the Buffalo chicken sandwich which was super saucy. Not my favorite but he liked it. Good, solid burgers- Classic, A-1 Steakhouse. The kids meals (chicken tenders, fries and drink) were very much enjoyed by our boys. The prices seemed high for what we deemed a fast food restaurant but when we got the food, we realized this is more sit down restaurant quality food. I think they may have changed management. Went here because of the great reviews but the burgers were not seasoned. No salt. They "smashed" it but there was no Maillard effect on the patties. Three burgers, two fries and a shake came out $70. The service was not good. The service/cashier might as well have been a robot. And this might be unrelated but added to the bad experience: their bathroom is connected to the convenience store next door and a male employee was in the women's bathroom (the multiple stall kind) when there was clearly a men's bathroom right next to it. After he saw me he didn't leave the bathroom. I waited outside. And he left with the water running (not the sensor kind). I had to shut it off. Had my head on a swivel until I left. Absolutely hate the order yourself deal. Didn't have a shake so I can comment on that but I had the chicken BLT with the upside down bun. All I can say is the slogan is 'Made fresh since 91'. The chicken sandwich was not made fresh it was so gross. Restaurant was clean their restrooms were disgusting. If you've driven the 5 as many times as we have you try to find more food options without going too far away from the freeway. There are some really good places to eat east and west, but if your trying to make time north or south there is only so much and the need for something new is always there. We had read about this and decided to try it out. We ordered and they were short staffed so the food took a bit of time to come out, maybe 20 minutes and there were only 4 people ahead of me. When we did get the food it was hot and good. A nice change from the normal fast food places that are always available. Give it a try. read more

A great stop along hwy 5 next to the Shell gas public restrooms and Electrify America electric car charging stations. You can get an unseasoned patty for your doggies for $3. They sure appreciate a good quality beef patty along with you while you're inhaling your burger. Great quality juicy patty although they don't have any signature sauces. Just plain ole mustard, honey mustard and ketchup. You can get grilled onions and mushrooms on your burger though. Apparently you can go all out and build your own massive burger and we were tempted, but with 200 miles still to get home, we didn't want to weigh down the car any further. read more

I got the kids cheeseburger meal and it was gross...whatever sauce they use it the burger was too sour. For my drink I got an unsweetened tea...tasted like dirt, straight fertilizer! The chili fries again, too much sauce barely any meat. The Buffalo tenders had a nice meat/batter ratio but not worth the price. The bacon fries barely had any fries almost all bacon. The double bacon burger definitely hit the spot. Burger patty and the rest of the ingredients tasted fresh though the patty could have used a bit of seasoning to make it amazing. I liked that they had bacon in between the patties as well as on top. Reminded me a bit of Shake shack which for me is a good thing. We were on our way North on the 5 and it was dinner time. By the time we would've driven further North to get to some actual restaurants, most would be closing or already closed when we arrived.
