I went to Bali a few years ago and feel in love with the flavors and joy behind Indonesian food. I haven't found a spot in LA that captured that spirit, but Wayang delivered! It is a take-out restaurant. The owner is a superstar, she runs the restaurant on her own from taking the orders, making all the food, and sharing her amazing home-style cooking. So hot tip would be order in advance over the phone to give her time to prep your food and eat there! I ordered two dishes nasi kuning complicit (basically a sampler of all the proteins with the most delicious rice, sambal and potato fritter), mie goreng (noodles) and Indonesian tea. I was blown away with all of it! You can't go wrong, can't wait to be back and support this gem of a restaurant!
Food & service are definitely not up to par. The cha Kwai teow & mee goreng has a charred taste. Cook probably didn't pay attention to the wok. Nasi Kunang w/rendang is edible. It's to-go service only @ most times(see picture). A lot of dishes on the menu were crossed out & not available. I won't waste my time traveling all to way to that part of Alhambra for a meal @Wayang. Food in Medan, Kopitam is so much more superior. Don't waste your time & money here.
I'm from the Bay Area where Indonesian food is rare. We've had Medan Kitchen before so we decided to give this place a try. On this trip, we ordered takeout but sat down for dessert. We came on a Saturday evening and there was no wait with just a couple tables with adventurous "bule" (caucasians) getting ready for their delicious meals. The es cendol is unique here in that they don't use the traditional green jelly but what looks like a homemade blue colored jelly. The palm sugar mixed with the shaved ice is very refreshing. I think it's more upscale than Medan kitchen but not by much. Medan Kitchen is a very casual place with more food options. For the food, we ordered nasi bungkus (combination rice goodness), nasi bebek (fried duck and rice), and mie tek tek (traditional fried noodles). My favorite is the nasi bungkus because it has a little bit of everything. They give a side of gudek (jackfruit curry) with the rice, fried chicken, beef empal (fried sliced beef) and spicy sambal. Although menu here is limited, I think they focus on a few good dishes. The duck seems deep fried. It comes with green sambal that compliments it well. My daughter liked it but I'd probably pass on the duck next time as it's a bit gamey for me.
I passed by this place many many times. Finally had the chance to give it a try. I was a bit disaappointed with the quality of their Nasi Bungkus. It was packed with a lot of rice however. Chicken was dry and the Beef was so hard to cut. It was quite pricey too for the quality. I'm sorry I probably won't go back.
This was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. I called to place an order and the woman who answered was completely rude and arrogant. I accidentally said the wrong item at first, and instead of helping me fix it, she snapped that she was busy, told me to check the menu myself, and then hung up the phone on me. I tried ordering online instead, but the website said to call to confirm payment. I called back, and the same person answered again with an angry tone. I still tried to stay polite and asked if she could check whether my order went through. She said she'd "answer later" like she was about to hang up again. When I asked how I was supposed to know if my order went through, she actually said she didnt care shes just busy, completely ignoring my request. She called me back later and said my order didn't go through even though the website said it did. When I told her I was disappointed, she just said, "Yeah, I'm busy today," with zero apology or care. This is absolutely unacceptable. If you can't treat customers with basic respect, you shouldn't be answering the phone. I will never order from here again. Update: 1 day later I originally left a review because of how rude and dismissive the person on the phone was when I tried to place and confirm my order. But now I am even more shocked because after this review, the same person texted me personally and brought up religion, telling me that "Lord Jesus should forgive me for my selfishness." This is completely unprofessional, offensive, and unacceptable for a business. A customer has the right to share an honest experience. If someone cannot handle basic customer service or respect boundaries, they should not be running a business or communicating with customers at all. If she is too busy to take orders or treat people kindly, then she should close temporarily instead of taking it out on customers. Do not blame customers for your bad attitude. I left feedback to help improve service, not to be insulted and lectured. This behavior crosses every line of professionalism.
Authentic delicious Indonesian food, what else is there to say! This restaurant is pretty short staff, I think there was just the waitress and one chef in the back. Expect some wait times because of the lack of staff and they make all the food fresh. Besides that, the food is bomb, I tried out these items. Nasi Bungkus - Tons of rice but everything was so good. Perfectly season and the meats were all very tender. Just a solid dish. (5/5) Nasi Kuning Komplit - The yellow rice was so good. Really good dish with many different items that are all good. You can't go wrong with this dish. (5/5) Service here is easily probably a 3/5 since they are short staffed but food is a 5/5. Support your local restaurants and this place is worth trying if you're open to a longer wait. It wasn't too crowded when I came on Saturday which was great. They do accept credit cards now but they have a 3% added fee. Bring cash/zelle to avoid the extra fees. Parking - There is one hour parking in front ( maybe only 4 - 5 spots) and two hour parking on the sides. Therefore parking is kind of limited.
Wayang is a true hidden gem in Alhambra! I have always wanted to try this place when it was previously Wong Java and finally got a chance this past Wednesday. No other customers were there when we arrived, so we had the whole place to ourselves. There was just one lady working the front (and I think she also cooked our food as well), and she was very nice and took our orders. We ordered nasi kuning komplit, lab satay, and mie goreng. For the month of September, they were doing free lemonade and 15% off, as well as free soup on weekends--check on their Instagram or website for the current deal of the month. The inside of the restaurant is very cute and homey--they have lots of photos on some of the walls and a TV playing Indonesian karaoke. Our food arrived 15 minutes after we ordered because they had to cook it, and everything was super delicious and came out nice and hot. The mie goreng had delicious wok hei/smoky aroma because the noodles were charred perfectly. The lamb satay had a delicious sweet and tangy sauce and was served with lontong (pieces of compressed rice cakes) to dip in the sauce. The nasi kuning komplit had delicious tumeric rice, beef rendang, spicy sambal on a fried egg, fried chicken (which was a little dry), a potato ball, fried tofu, and cucumbers. My husband and sister-in-law were in love with the lamb satay and mie goreng (they said they could each eat a whole plate by themselves), so we will definitely be back for more (and to try their other food)!
Our school is close by so we usually come by here for lunch when we get the chance. This is a pretty small restaurant with good flavors especially if you love spicy and savory. Parking: street parking, I haven't encountered a lack of parking space whenever I came by. Staff is polite and friendly. There may be times your food might take longer than expected and they do mention it by the wall at the counter. Food: I've tried their beef rendang before and that was one of my favorites, and the soup they usually serve as complimentary when you dine in. Today's visit, they didn't have both and I was a bit sad. I did get other dishes and all of them were also really good and tasty. We had the Mie Goreng Udang, Nasi Goreng Beef and Nasi Bangkus. Mie Goreng with shrimp: good dish to share. Even if you have a rice dish I think this is a great addition. Light and smokey flavor with hint of soy sauce and spices. Nasi Goreng beef: this fried rice is really good. One of our go to, this has good amount of beef slices and the flavor is just right! This goes really well with beef rendang and sambal, also add a splash of their sweet soy sauce and it's BOMB. Nasi Bangkus: first time having this dish. There are sweet, savory and very spicy flavors in this. Their greenish/dark brown sambal is VERY SPICY, for me. The red one is the one I can tolerate. The dish had chicken, beef, tofu, egg and jackfruit. A plateful of protein and carbs! I really think this is a good meal to have if you want to try lots of different dishes for the price of one. Sadly I didn't have the spicy/sour soup they would offer back then, it would help elevate the dishes. Good spot to try Indonesian food if you're interested!
Been coming where before they changed the name and I feel like they are stepping up the game with the new branding and marketing! They reduced the menu items for sure, but my favorites are still in the menu like Tempe Mendoan and Ayam Kremes. They offer free (sour) soup, Sayur Asem, every weekend and also home ad Lemonade. Their es teler is legit good but I wouldn't order their Cendol anymore, it needs some improvement in taste and texture. Parking is available in the back as usual or on the side.
This is the best Indonesian food I have had in SoCal. As someone who cooks a lot & who prefers making things from scratch, I could immediately tell this place stood out from a lot of other restaurants. The chef makes EVERYTHING from scratch. She makes everything fresh, including using fresh whole spices. It's a one-woman operation. The food is fresh, but good food takes time, so please be patient & come when you have some time to spare. I promise it's worth the wait.
Parking: Got street parking for an hour in front of the restaurant wasn't difficult at all. They're understaffed, but didn't feel like we waited too long for our food. Although, there's 3 parties in the restaurant currently! Ambiance is mom and pop. Has simple Indonesian decor. They offer cassava chips and sprite, Dr. pepper, Diet Coke. Food was so good! We got the chicken satay- it comes in a deliciously rich, slightly sweet, nutty sauce and some rice cakes cubes that I've never had before. Kwetiau goreng udang - tastes like it was properly cooked in a wok. Reminds me of a Thai dish called pad see ew, with the wide flat noodles. But the flavors is different. Love the fried shallots on top. Nasi kuning Komplit This combines the fried chicken, the beef rendang. Comes with this mash potato mixture, cold cucumbers, fried egg with the hot sauce, a fried tofu. The beef rendang was so tender! Curious why this place isn't more popping!

Severe staffing issues. The gado-gado wasn't too bad. The peanut sauce wasn't creamy but chunky, perhaps a regional variant or just a matter of it being homemade instead of coming from a store-bought bottle. Personally, I prefer hefty chunks of blanched cabbage to make up the bulk of a gado-gado. So I was disappointed to find Wong Java House's version had no cabbage in it and was mostly flimsy slices of lettuce leaves and bean sprouts. The entree was nasi kuning komplit, with yellow rice, potato fritter, beef rendang, fried chicken, slice of fried tofu, and fried egg with sambal. The meat, particularly the beef rendang, was dry. The potato fritter was soggy. In general, a fairly forgettable plate. But as I mentioned, the main issue was with the staffing. First, there's a sign on the door that says "Cooks wanted" which isn't promising for a restaurant specializing in regional cuisine. Second, the two women who were working were both busy handling a large take-out order, so I stood around the register for several minutes before anyone noticed me. It then took 10 minutes for someone to take my order, and another 20 minutes for the first part of my order to arrive. The street parking out front has a 1 hour limit. If Alhambra wasn't being lax on enforcing it, I definitely would've been hit with a ticket. The woman working there was apologetic about the wait, but it was still a frustrating dine-in experience, and the food -- $32 before tips, I'll add -- didn't nearly make up for it. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Alhambra! The flavors are very strong and multidimensional. I ordered the mie goreng and it was savory, salty, umami, and a little sweet. I really enjoyed the nasi kuning as well. A word of caution, the sambal is very spicy but delicious! The service can be a little slow at times but well worth it. There is an average amount of space in the restaurant and street parking nearby. Would recommend coming on weekday if possible. read more

It took 40 minutes since he took the order until the food arrived. Btw, they only accept Cash/Zelle. The Siomay is not a good representation of Indonesian food, the peanut sauce is watery. For the Nasi kuning everything is pretty good except the rice itself which seems to be like a leftover rice, the balado egg was cold like from the fridge, but other topping were good, the chicken could use more seasoning, but other wise its okay. For the nasi bungkus, the fried is the same quite good, the jackfruit is meh, the dendeng is good. The service was In conclusion, as an Indonesian, I would say there are better Indonesian place out there, but its not bad as a stepping stone, as the price is mild to Indonesian taste. Frequented by high level government officials from Indonesia on visits to the States, when you step through the doors you are whisked to what it feels like back in the homeland. They are not yet open for indoor dining and nowhere outside to eat either so be prepared for takeout. The chicken satay is great (tender, juicy, and flavorful), the beef coconut soup is savory, and the avocado shake is delightful. However, the fried rice and fried chicken while extremely plentiful were both on the dry side and lacked flavor. Would also suggest calling in order as I placed an order in person and was supposed to take 20 minutes but ended up taking almost 60 minutes. They also only take cash or Venmo. The owner is a very nice and polite individual and for that alone will return to try this place again as it's worthy of trying for those willing to try new food and experiences. read more
Came for dinner on Saturday, and it was not busy. Their hours actually differ from the Yelp page, I believe they close by 7:00pm. We were the only ones dining-in by the end of our meal. They currently only accept CASH or Zelle payments. It was a bit of a hit-and-miss for our first visit, not sure if we just didn't order the correct items. Spice level is pretty high too, which I understand might be common for Indonesian food. My only complaint about dining in was the restaurant had almost no air circulation and was pretty stuffy... *G5. Nasi Bungkus. I thought it would literally be wrapped in the banana leaf, but it ended up looking like it's more for aesthetics - everything seemed to be cooked separately then plated together. The beef jerky (w/ red peppers on top - spicy!!) and jackfruit were flavorful, but the boiled egg and tofu were quite bland and the fried chicken was a bit difficult to eat & dry. Definitely needed the rice to help mellow out the spice for this dish. *E10. Beef Rendang. This was a pretty small plate of beef for the price, and it was pretty dry & tough. The seasonings were on point, and this definitely helped with some of the spice from our other dish, but the beef itself was one that "gets stuck in the teeth" kind, which I'm not a fan of... *I1. Es Cendol. We ordered this as a "dessert" and cooling refresher after the spice. Pandan Jelly looked like noodles and the coconut milk and palm sugar tasted fine. I just wish that the ice was more "crushed" instead of large chunks straight from the ice machine. Restrooms are unisex, but clean (stall on the left is for men & stall on the right is for women), reminds me of Asia. I just need to figure out what to order next time. Our server was a very nice lady, and we didn't wait too long for the food. We finished eating around 6:45pm, and it looked like she was already locking up and closing shop for the night when we left. read more

I visited this past Saturday after doing a quick online search for vegan friendly restaurants in Alhambra. The Happy Cow website mentioned many dishes can be made vegan with tofu or tempeh substitutions. Our party of 3 was the only party there around 11:30am. We were greeted by the owner, Susilo. He was so friendly and shared some really helpful suggestions. We ordered: Mie GM Nasi Kuning Komplit Sayur Asem Komplit with Tofu and Tempeh The Mie GM was really tasty--a simple, humble dish that will make you feel the warm and fuzzies. I chose the Nasi Kuning Komplit because it had a little bit of everything (and I'm indecisive and like to try lots of things). Everything was delicious. The potato fritter was surprisingly a bit spicy, the fried chicken was flavorful with lots of garlic (yum!), and the beef rendeng had a complex and comforting flavor, like something that would take hours to make at home. It also came with an egg with spices on top, cucumber to offset the spiciness, and one piece of tofu. I did not try the Sayur Asem Komplit but my vegan cousin ate the entire dish, so that's a good sign! Important to note that they only take cash or zelle right now. Huh. Really good Indonesian food. Who knew? Obscured and non attractive outside. Without Yelp I would've never found this place. First thing upon seating was being thanked by the owner for coming in. I noticed a few tables were taken, within 15 minutes most were occupied by large groups of families. And yes, they also serve family style dishes. I got G5. NASI BUNGKUS $11.50 - this was SO GOOD. I have never had such a fun mix of flavors and textures in a plate like this. Yellow rice with a piece of chili fried chicken (their style), beef jerky (dengdeng) which was awesome, cooked jackfruit (I thought it was large pieces of palmito) and egg and ULTRA SPICY green sauce over the cucumber. This dish was gone soon after it came. All served in a banana leaf cutout. Very traditional. Next dish was SOTO BETAWI $10.50, a beef soup with coconut milk which was also good. Some pieces of beef were soft, some overcooked, but the overall flavor reminded me of a thai soup. I was satisfied with the meals and honestly think it is a place worth visiting. After being tired of all the same ol' Asian restaurants in the SGV, this place makes you realize how much more there is. Only complain was: Service. I waited forever for the check. We ordered Nasi Ayam Rempah, Nasi goreng Ikan Masin, Kueh Teow Goreng, Kangkung Belacan and some drinks. Oh my god!!! The Kangkung belacan was the hit!!! The sauce was so aromatic I could still smell it in my head. I loooove the Nasi Goreng Ikan masin. Cooked to perfection with crunchy, savory salted fish. The sambal for Nasi Ayam Rempah was so flavorful and the spiciness just right!!! She added more sambal while we ate there. I'm spicy crazy!!!! Then, we had kueh Teow Goreng! Oh I missed the taste of it. Exactly like home!!! Made me wondering where she bought all the ingredients.... It tastes so original! Oh yea, the service of course super awesome! read more

I've still been trying to find a place with beef rendeng that is on par with the now closed papparich but will have to keep looking Food took some time to come out so I wouldn't recommend going when you're on a time crunch ---combination fried rice: a great pairing with the other a la carte dishes, love the spices in Indonesian fried rice ---ayam penyet: fried chicken, tasty and crispy yum! ---beef rendeng: a little dry and overcooked ---chicken satay: not the best I've had NOTE: easy street parking in the adjacent street read more

The food is absolutely life changing. The chicken sauté made me want to order five more orders but I was so stuffed from everything else. The beef rangdang (excuse my spelling) was so tender, and buttery, not what I expected. So delicious. Now let's get to the fried chicken. People talk about Borneo Kalimantan vs Simpang Asia as the places to go for authentic Indonesian food, but this place is every bit as good as those two, and in some dishes, Wong surpasses them. I had the nasi goreng w/ shrimp (amazing that shrimp is only +$1 on top of the default chicken/beef) along with ayam penyet and they were both delicious. Portion sizes were A+. If I had known those two dishes were so good I probably would've gotten the belacan kangkung just to round out the meal. I honestly felt bad I didn't buy more food during my takeout cause it's niche restaurants like this that are hurting the most during lockdown. I hope this place survives! read more

Had the Siomay Bandung, Tongseng Kambing, and Super Spicy Ayam Penyet. And 2 rice of course. The owners were very friendly, down to earth, and made me feel at home. We helped with the small incident too xD, thank God everything turned out fine. I thought the portions weren't huge, but I got really full and we had some left overs to go. The tongseng was soooo goood... I can just eat the soup with rice. It had goat meat, tomatoes, cabbage, green onions, chili. The ayam penyet was crispy and tender, crunchy toppings, and green spicy fresh sambal. A bit too salty but with rice it was good. The siomay was big for an appetizer... the peanut sauce was bomb, the siomay had some tofu and fish. I will be back for sure. I love the ambience. read more

Wong Java House is a casual dine-in Indonesian restaurant. Normally this is the kind of restaurants that flies under my radar, but one of my friends came here because he wanted to try their fried chicken. Parking is on the street and the restaurant does accept credit cards. The menu was certainly overwhelming with many dishes that I have never heard before. The fried chicken (ayam penyet) is listed under a la carte and you will also find other rice and noodle specialties. Service was sub-par and the staff was slightly confused with our orders. I can never figure out on why one of my friends insisted on ordering the shaved ice (es campur) when the staff warned him about not-so-good avocado. *** Nasa Bungkus (Beef dedeng [thinly sliced dried meat], green chili fried chicken, jackfruit, boiled egg, rice served traditionally wrapped in a banana leaf - $9.50): It had an interesting mix of chili spices. I liked both green chili and sweet red chili, but fried chicken tasted REALLY dry. Chicken satay (5 skewers in peanut sauce, appetizer - $9.50): Skewers weren't too bad and it was definitely the best order of the night. Very savory sauce. *** Personally this is NOT my preferred option if I am looking for Indonesian food in the SGV (San Gabriel Valley) area, but I still think Wong Java House is worth a visit for foodies who are looking for something different and unique. read more

Tried this place out with a group of friends and it was not what I was expecting. We had a table of over 20 people and the owner took care of us. He helped us picked some popular dishes and overall everyone seems to be satisfied with his picks. The food came out pretty fast for our big group and it was delish. It was hard to take pics as once the plate was set down on the table, people devoured the food before any pics can be shot. We barely had any leftovers. We stayed a bit past their closing hours and they were extremely accommodating. They never kicked us out and/or insisted we leave. Instead they asked if we wanted to karaoke? Great and friendly staff and you can tell they're really accommodating to their customers. The ambiance is very chilled and would definitely go back with a smaller group. read more

I go to this place often because the food is really good! Reminds me of back home. The best kangkung belacan I've had in LA. It's hard to find a good one. Street parking is easy to find. Formerly Wong Java - the food here is delicious and the owner is amazing, she treats you like family! I lived in Indonesia for 14 years and I can confidently say this is the most authentic Indonesian food in Los Angeles! We had the Ayam Kremes, Ikan Penyet, and Mie Goreng and they were all so good. I also recommend the Nasi Goreng and Satay Ayam! read more

This is probably the most welcoming and homey restaurant we have ever been to. The server and the lady I think they might be the owners? The lady said she's also the one who cooks the dishes. They are very nice and gives you a very warm welcoming vibe! We love Indonesian food and we drive pretty far to simpang to eat Indonesian food. However, when I saw this place in yelp we decided to check this place out instead. And oh my goodness, this is wayyyyyy better than simpang! The chicken mie goreng was so delicious!!! And the nasi bungkus was soooo good too! The only down side is that they ran out of certain foods because they had a busy Saturday (the day before) but I can't complain, their food is really good I'm not surprised they run out. I had the cendol which we also always get at simpang and when they gave it to me in my mind, ehhhh? Why does it look like that? It looks different and unappetizing. But when I gave it a good stir and I sipped oh it's the best cendol ever! Will definitely come back here soon! read more

Easy street parking, and some spots in back of the restaurant. Loved the food there!
Do any of these restaurants have an old fashioned reistafel with multi courses?
