This is my first visit, and I ordered the fried noodles and a fried fritter made from soybean called tempeh mendoan. The tempeh mendoan was fried to crisp. Although the tempeh inside the batter are the soft kind, like how tempeh mendoan normally is, usually tempeh mendoan are meant to get fried half done (before it crisped). Their version is more like just normal crispy fried tempeh. But don't get me wrong, it's tastes amazing! If you love fried fritters, you HAVE to try it. It's crisp, flavorful, made of soybean, such a joy to eat. And moreover, it comes with REAL indonesian chilies. It's not jalapeno, it's not thai chili, it's the fresh and spicy chili. I'll definitely be back for the tempeh alone. There's not much i can write about the friend noodle, except the fact that this the best indonesian fried noodle in LA. Or at least top two! It tastes truly indonesian, not indo-adjacent like other indo places that serve fried noodles that kinda more like pancit or chinese fried noodles. Wayang's mie goreng (fried noodles) comes with the right noodle, the right vegetables, the perfect sauteed eggs, it's just perfect. Other favorites that they offer is a bit pricy. But kinda understandable, because it's sought after by indonesians. For instance, nasi kuning (turmeric rice with assorted proteins), ayam geprek (fried chicken pressed into spicy chilies), and nasi bungkus (kinda like japanese bento or korean bibimbap: white rice with assorted proteins and gravy). read more

100% my favorite restaurant in greater Los Angeles and it is not even close. I have two recommendations: ayam gerpek and nasi bungkus. The latter is more of a general sampler. The former is a type of fried chicken that comes with a little dish of sambal, and this sambal is like crack. It is seriously one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted. I wish they would bottle it, but I think its flavor is probably due to its freshness. Neither of those dishes has ever missed. I also like the signs posted around the restaurant saying something like "We are not a fast food restaurant. We are cooking your food and it takes TIME." Formerly Wong Java House, Wayang Restaurant has adopted a new name. They made some minor changes to their menu, but overall it is the same Indonesian fare. We showed up at 11 AM sharp on a week day to try their food. We went to Wayang when it was still Wong Java House, but we were looking forward to the new changes. We ended up getting nasi bungkus, nasi goreng, and mie goreng. Their menu listed a nasi goreng special which included an Indonesian omelette, but the server said they didn't have it the day we went, so we got the regular nasi goreng. The nasi bungkus was quite delicious. The rendang was a bit dry for me, but the taste was definitely good. I loved the generous serving of sambal and green chilis. The chicken was ok, but the jackfruit was solid. The nasi goreng and mie goreng were very similar, one being fried rice and the other being stir fried noodles. The stir fried noodles had very strong, bold flavors, and I loved the mie goreng a lot. I could definitely taste a hint of sambal which added depth to the flavor. We've been by this place a few times and didn't realize there's an Indonesian restaurant right next door. The sign isn't that big outside, or it's not visible enough for people to see when driving. We tried a few different Indonesian dishes. Some were really good, and some weren't. Lamb satay is really good. It's super juicy and tender with sweet soy sauce and chili. The second best dish was mee goreng - it's like a fried egg noodles with vegetables and you can choose from chicken, beef, or shrimp. The third one is stinky bean with shrimp. It's really tasty with spicy sauce. The place is super clean, and the food is cooked right when you order it. We ordered Nasi kuning with some chicken and rendang, but the chicken wasn't that great. It just had a bit of crunchiness on top. Right now, they're giving out free lemonade and 15% off, and on weekends, they're giving out free sweet and sour soup. Overall, the place and the waitress are pretty good, but they do charge a fee for using a credit card. So, make sure you bring some cash with you to avoid that fee. I'd really appreciate it if they could let us know ahead of time if there is a card fee when using it. We'll definitely be back for different dishes next time. read more

My friend and I were really excited to try this Indonesian restaurant. We have ordered the fried rice with fish, the dried salted fish tasted old and stale, that made the fried rice tasted stale as well. We mentioned this to the waitress, and she took the dish back to the kitchen. The chef then came out and showed us a jar of dried fish, claiming it was fresh and had been bought just last week. However, they didn't offer to replace the dish or suggest we order something else. Instead, they insisted that the fish was fresh. To make matters worse, it took almost an hour for our dish to arrive, and we were still charged for the stale food they took away. Poor service, plus stale food, means I won't be coming back. This place showed up in my search for Indonesian food nearby. It's in the less popular area of Alhambra. But don't let that stop you. Food is pretty good and the staffs are really nice. Sadly whenever I come by, there isn't that many people dining. If you compare to other indo restaurants, their food is on the better spectrum. We walked in for a Sunday lunch with friends. The restaurant itself is small but very clean. It has a small section selling Indonesian snacks. Lady owner was super friendly but she worked so hard all by herself. She helped us with wifi and online ordering, then she went to the kitchen to cook. The owner Muhammad was very proud of his Indonesian cooking and suggested we ordered the whole menu. After some real talk, we settled for ayam penyet (chicken pressed then fried), mie goreng with beef, chicken and shrimp (pan fried noodles), and tempeh mendoan (deep fried dough). Since it was made to order, it did take some time for the food to be ready with our take out. It was about 25 min for us, so call ahead might be a good idea (but you wouldn't be able to shoot the shit with Muhammad). Glad to report, we loved everything we got, especially the fried dough. The flavors were unique and hard to describe, but good kind of unique. Muhammad even gave us extra spicy sauce to try and that sauce was seriously good with anything and everything. We ordered a bungkus (rice wrapped in banana leaf with several accompaniments) somewhere else and decided at the last minute that we needed more "protein" lol. We ended up ordering their fried fish (market price and depends on availability - we got the pompano and it was cooked well, crispy on the outside, soft and steaming inside and it came with a few sauces and a side salad that was so good!!), THE BEEF RENDANG WAS BOMB, there's really no other explanation, it was a flavor explosion and beef was so tender, will def go back for more of this. And the ayam penet was the most authentic we have tried in a long time. The owner was there and was such a sweet, sweet soul. I came here on Memorial Day in the morning craving for some Indonesian food. After checking on Google and Yelp that this joint is open for Memorial Day, without second thoughts I went in. Here are some dishes that I order: - Ayam Penyet Komplit, which comes with two fried tofu, two tempeh, beef chunks, and egg. It was good! The fried seasoning is there and I can taste the flavor. -Ayam Kremes. This is where the taste start to go down. It was filled with bones, and the chicken was dry. Don't get me wrong, the seasoning was good but it's not what I'm expecting from this type of dish. -Water spinach ( Kangkung Belacan) is on point. Nothing to add there -Tempeh Mendoan. In my opinion, there is too much batter in this dish. Yes it was crispy, but after eating a bunch, I realized that it's just filled with batter. The beef rendang and rice was good as well and i now wish i had more of it!
