The Booker T. Washington School is a Registered Historic Landmark in Rush County. The school was built in 1905 and served grades 1 - 6 for the local African American population until 1932. There were meetings rooms upstairs opened for local meetings as well.
I stopped by to visit as I am interested in Indiana architecture and history. The building is Romanesque Revival with simplistic lines.
In the 1990's, the building was renovated and updated to offer Head Start programs and is maintained by the Arts and Cultural Council of Rush County. The building was not open to the public during my visit, but I was able to walk around and enjoy the lawns and think about the children that once played and studied here.
It's worth a drive by if in the area. read more
