Our absolute favorite sushi restaurant in the Des Moines area and I am very particular about my food! We've been here a half dozen times now in the last year and we've never left disappointed. We love the clean professional atmosphere, the food and service are wonderful! My wife does not like sushi or much of anything "exotic" and always gets the chicken fried rice and loves it. New sushi place near the hotel I always stay at in Johnston. Great first experience. I started with seaweed salad and their coconut mule cocktail. Both were excellent and then moved on to Marilyn Monroe and crouching tiger rolls. They were also both damn tasty especially when you add cream cheese. Would recommend it and I'll be back for sure! Like the other Wasabi locations, this newest location (Aug 2018) has some of the best sushi I've enjoyed country-wide, from Vegas to Minneapolis to Chicago to New York to Tampa. Johnston needed something like Wasabi! A great place to sit and have a drink or for a quick lunch/dinner. The streamed edamame and miso soup are a must. There is nothing on the menu that I've tried and haven't loved. From the start, the service wasn't too great, and it only got worse. When I asked the waitress what came in the sweet potato tempura roll, she couldn't tell me, and in the end that's what I ordered. Once she brought the order out, I was handed a shrimp tempura roll instead. I told the waitress I didn't order shrimp, and she continued to argue with me that I did. I'm a vegetarian, meaning I can't even eat shrimp, so there is no way I would've ordered shrimp, but she wouldn't let up until finally the manager told her to replace it. read more

I've visited most of the sushi restaurants in the Des Moines area but Wasabi remains my favorite from their food to their customer service, each detail makes your experience more enjoyable. Their menu varies at each restaurant but if you'd like something from one their other restaurants they will gladly make it for you. We first went to Wasabi in Ankeny and loved it - when we moved to Johnston we were happy we had a Wasabi super close! Just as great as Ankeny - although decor is toned down a bit. My husband empty beer glass dried before my husband had to actually stop the server to ask for another beer Server told the tables around us about items not on the menu but didn't bother to tell us. We were passing through town as road trip travelers from Washington D.C, and had- probably the best- dinner so far of the trip. The food was fresh and tasty, and adhered to some of the newer trendy-cuisine concepts. We were really interested in middle American seafood, so we took a shot and tried sushi. We got the salmon sashimi- fresh, buttery, crisp and thick cut (yum!) We happened to be there the night the owner was around and shared our travels with him. He was kind enough to work with the service team and sent out an appetizer. This was much appreciated by my friend and I. ***TO THE YELP REVIEWERS OUT THERE: people think they will get free food, or be rewarded by places if they give negative feedback about something, but I have to say: not enough people get this same luxury providing positive feedback on great service, hospitality, and food.*** That being said, we did not give negative or positive feedback. We were welcomed into the restaurant by helpful hosts, laughed with and guided through the menu/restaurant concept by our excellent server, Shannon, and engaged in lovely conversation with the owner. We felt as if we were given a complimentary dish due to true hospitality- As if you welcomed someone into your home and offered them a beverage. And for that- our long road trip has so far been made. Proceeding into dinner, we had the Old School Ramen. I must say- it was incredible. Absolutely delicious. The only feedback I'd give is to make it pork broth, however the chicken broth was LEGIT. Wasabi in Prairie Trail in Ankeny is an upscale restaurant featuring a sushi bar as well as a full-service bar serving cocktails, wine, beer and saki. The modern facility with both high top tables and booths hip décor and large TVs over the bar. The decorative live edge wood planks along a back lit wall was imaginative, beautiful and different. I was impressed with the Oriental beers available including Japanese beers, expected in a sushi restaurant, as well as Chinese Tsingtao and Thai Singha. Edamame always goes well with drinks and the steamed soy beans were properly steamed with the appropriate amount of salt. Wasabi lists another appetizer as pan fried pork dumplings otherwise known as gyoza, the Japanese pot sticker. 6 dumplings were served with a soy-vinegar dipping sauce, the skins were thin as they should be and the filling moist and tasty. For our next course we ordered some nigiri sushi. The tuna and salmon sushi served with the traditional ginger and wasabi showed this restaurant really knows what it is doing. The fish was of a very high quality and extremely fresh while the rice underneath was just perfectly prepared and not excessive. Since we had never eaten here before we were reluctant to devote the entire meal to sushi but I assure you on our next visit it will be sushi all the way, that is if I can convince my wife not to order the grilled salmon teriyaki. The salmon teriyaki was perfectly prepared, a large moist portion of very fresh salmon that my wife declared as the best salmon teriyaki she had ever eaten, quite a compliment from a salmon lover. I ordered the Yaki Niku Beef, described on the menu as char-grilled beef with seasoned vegetables with yaki niku sauce. The dish was served on an oval cast iron plater sitting on an oval wooden tray that more resembled how fajitas are served. The yaki niku sauce is slightly sweet and while the beef was tender the vegetables were somewhat mushy. Although that dish was tasty, there are so many other interesting choices on the menu including ramen and soba, to try next time. Wasabi also offered a good selection of sea food, scallops, cod and shrimp, in addition to their sushi, sashimi and hand rolls. Wasabi is now our go-to place in the area for Japanese cuisine. read more

This is a solid Sushi restaurant with good atmosphere and even better wait staff. The food that we ordered was fresh and well prepared. The only reason I gave it three stars is that most of the rolls come with spice tuna. While I don't mind spicy tuna, I don't want it on every roll. Could this be viewed as a filler or less desirable cut of tuna...don't know but when you see the menu you'll know what I'm talking about. With all that said don't let this hold you back...Order the spicy edamame... outstanding! read more
