She gave us menus in english and was kind enough to explain everything we didn't understand. Took a while to get our order in but, the food followed promptly (its a great place so it gets busy) Over all a wonderful old school, delicious home cooked German culinary experience. Highly recommend it. Skol!

A long plane ride, followed by a long train led me to the streets of Münster late one night. As I…read morewandered the Prinzipalmarkt taking in such moonlit sites as St. Paulus Dom and Stadtmuseum my stomach longed to forget the "food" served on the plane and to find genuine German cuisine like Oma would make. Ach ja! The answer to my prayers was discovered at Altes Gasthaus Leve. As I walked through the wooden, stain glass appointed doors I felt welcomed by the decor, staff and ambiance of this quaint restaurant. The waitress who greeted us as the door bobbed and weaved through the narrow doorways and around tables as she guided us to our table. Hand knit place mats and a single candle greeted us, adding to the overall appeal of this traditional German restaurant. Friends and family could be seen gathered at the tables around us, as Easter Eggs hung from the chandelier above. As I lost myself in the menu our waiter brought me back to reality with an offering of a local beer, Pinkus Müller. How could I resist? It wasn't long before we settled on a few traditional items from the menu. I settled on Rheinischer Sauerbraten mit Apfelkompott und Kartoffelkloß (Sauerbraten with apple compote and potato dumpling.) The sauerbraten was expertly prepared where you could cut it with a fork. The Kartoffelkloß was dense yet flavorful and paired perfectly with the gravy. The Apfelkompott was chunky and well seasoned with a cranberry garnish and showed the level of care and respect this restaurant had for its traditional dishes. Visiting Germany? Make sure to visit the vibrant city of Münster. Visiting Münster? Don't neglect to visit Altes Gasthaus Leve.
