James Blair Middle School - Just some kids kickin' it

James Blair Middle School

(2 reviews)

We moved in from out of state and I have to say, at first, there was a bit of culture shock. Yes,…read morethere were discipline issues, but at the end of the day both of my kids did well. The 2018-2019 school year was the first year the new James Blair was open. I'm hoping they get things ironed out (which I'm sure they will) with the new administration. Don't let the horror stories scare you. My kids were in no way harmed or scarred by attending JBMS.

Why cant students have their earbuds in when they are in science but when they are in other classes…read morethey can? Why does the word "cluck" get me yelled at whenever I say it? And people wonder why the students are rebelling or leaving the school. Maybe they can at least give us open seating but limit the amount of ppl per table, then it wouldn't be such a problem! HATE THIS SCHOOl!... only reason I go here is cuz its better than Berkeley and I like my first period and last periods. On top of that the chairs that move around are ok until they have the attached desks which are so annoying in many ways but the most annoying way is how far the desk is from the person. Why is it that far from us? Is it even healthy to have it that far? Other things I find to complain about are the teachers, Ms. N is so unpredictable she can go from happy to annoyed to angry in 0.01 seconds and we even had a student transfer out of the class cause of her attitude. I got yelled at saying "stop having an attitude" when it wasn't even attitude none the less not even for her directly. I know once she see's this.. If she ever does... she would say "stop being argumentative " when I said I wasn't having an attitude! On top of that... every teacher would give ur earbuds back after the end of class, but Ms. S oh... oh no she wants to be extra about that kind of stuff even to keep the earbuds and put them in the main office even giving people referrals for such a small detail as that. "Your computer making sounds by accident cause u forgot to put your earbuds in? Did it sound cause your earbuds got pulled out? Did the volume go up by accident so when u opened ur computer it made sound? Oh I can hear your sound from your earbuds! oh well to bad its mine now" that's for Ms. N's class. Im never suggesting this school to anyone, im never telling ppl I went/go there cause its so embarrassing. Its not even the bullying anymore it's the teachers who are the absolute worse the only phew that are good is the art teacher the civics teacher Mr. R English teacher Ms. H and Ms. HW. I guess decent teachers are Mr. P This has been a bad experience they need to improve fast, as in anytime now.

William & Mary - Original 17th century bricks.

William & Mary

The Sir Christopher Wren Building at William & Mary is the oldest college building still standing in the United States and the oldest of the restored public buildings in Williamsburg. It was constructed between 1695 and 1700, before Williamsburg was founded, when the capital of the colony of Virginia was still located at Jamestown, and the tract of land between the James and York rivers which was to become Williamsburg was populated by crude timber buildings and known as "Middle Plantation." The Wren Building has been gutted by fire three times -- in 1705, 1859 and 1862. Each time the interior of the structure was rebuilt, and for more than three centuries, it has been "the soul of the College." In the building, generations of William & Mary students have attended classes and lectures, enjoyed meals and attended classes. The most honored tradition however of graduation exercises takes place here. The reconstruction is not expected to be complete until the 2026-2027 school year.

I visited part of the W&M campus in mid-October 2023. It's lovely to walk through the grounds and…read moreview the historic buildings. The colonial architecture from England is a prominent theme throughout the campus. The Wren Building (perhaps the oldest college building in the United States) appears similar in design to the Royal Hospital of Chelsea (in London). The Sadler Center is a modern hub for student activities and socializing. It's a great building to visit if students are on campus as it can give you a sense of the campus vibe. The undergraduate students appear to outnumber graduate students (the law school is on a separate campus). I noticed one possible downside. While the campus is lovely, it does appear to be a "bubble" since it is physically isolated from a traditional community of local residents. Being physically next to Colonial Williamsburg - a mecca for tourists and Virginia middle school tour groups - may seem appealing at first. But it could grow old after a year or two.
